Highlights from the past week in Ohio State Athletics
Athletes of the Week
J.T. Barrett, football
- Barrett accounted for four touchdowns and ran for an Ohio State quarterback-record 189 yards in No. 8 Ohio State’s 31-24 win over No. 25 Minnesota Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis, Minn. Barrett has been responsible for a school-record 38 touchdowns this season, tied for the most in the FBS.
Ameryst Alston, women’s basketball
- Alston led an Ohio State offensive outburst Sunday to defeat St. Francis, 113-97. Alston scored 23 of her career-high 39 points in the decisive season half. Her 39 points was tied for the third-most in a game by a Buckeye in school history.
Football (9-1, 6-0 B1G)
- No. 8 Ohio State defeated No. 25 Minnesota 31-24 on Saturday afternoon at TCF Bank Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes have 13 consecutive victories on the road, the longest active streak in the FBS.
Women’s Basketball (1-1, 0-0 B1G)
- The women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season Sunday, defeating St. Francis 113-97. The Buckeyes topped 100 points for the first time since 2004.
- Alston added nine rebounds and dished-out six assists to her 39 points scored, while freshman Kelsey Mitchell posted 29 points and six assists.
Men’s Basketball (1-0, 0-0 B1G)
- The 20th-ranked men’s basketball team secured a 92-55 victory against UMass-Lowell in the season opener Friday evening.
- Senior Sam Thompson scored 14 points, while freshman D’Angelo Russell added 16 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Wrestling (3-0, 0-0 B1G)
- The fourth-ranked wrestling team continued its strong early-season showing Saturday, picking up a pair of dual-meet victories over Army and Arizona State at the Journeymen Tussle in Clifton Park, N.Y. Earlier in the week, the Buckeyes opened their dual-meet season in dominating fashion, defeating Kent State, 38-3, in Columbus.
Women’s Cross Country
- The women’s cross country team received one of 13 at-large bids to the 2014 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, the NCAA announced Saturday. The appearance will be the second in school history for the 19th-ranked Buckeyes and the first since 2009.
- Led by All-Region performers Katie Borchers and Michelle Thomas, the team finished fifth out of 32 teams Friday afternoon at the 2014 NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis.
Men’s Hockey (3-6-1, 0-0-0 B1G)
- The men’s hockey team scored three late goals to down No. 19 Bowling Green, 3-2, Friday at BGSU Ice Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
- Junior Anthony Greco scored the gamewinner at 19:26 to lift the Buckeyes to the victory.
Rifle
- The rifle team posted a season-high 4,654 on Sunday at the Dr. John C. Fellingham Buckeye Open. The Buckeyes placed second in the collegiate field, after being out shot by TCU (4672) and beating Nevada (4610) and Morehead State (4584).
