Athletes of the Week
Joey Bosa, football
- Named Big Ten and Athlon Defensive Player of the Week after a huge game against Penn State that included a game-ending quarterback sack of PSU QB Christian Hackenberg. Bosa had six tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 quarterback sacks for losses totaling 18 yards.
Luisa Shirmer, women’s volleyball
- Sparked the 20th-ranked women’s volleyball team with a career-high 14 kills in a five-set thriller vs. Michigan State and 12 kills in a sweep vs. Michigan at St. John Arena this weekend. The Buckeyes collected their seventh win in the last eight matches.
Football (6-1, 3-0 B1G)
- Ohio State defeated Penn State 31-24 Saturday night in 2 OT in Happy Valley.
- The Buckeyes held the Nittany Lions to 240 total yards and a season-low 16 yards rushing to move their Big Ten regular-season win streak to 19 games, one shy of the record of 20 held by OSU teams from 2005-07.
Women’s Volleyball (16-6, 7-3 B1G)
- No. 20 Ohio State earned two wins over the weekend against conference rivals Michigan State and Michigan to move to 7-3 in league play, the program’s best start in conference since 2005.
- The Buckeyes defeated the Spartans Friday in five sets (25-20, 14-25, 25-20, 14-25, 15-6) before sweeping the Wolverines Saturday night (25-21, 25-21, 25-19).
Men’s Soccer (7-5-3, 4-2 B1G)
- Ohio State earned a pair of victories during the week by a combined 7-1 margin.
- Three Buckeyes found the back of the net in a 3-0 victory over Bowling Green Wednesday, while sophomore Danny Jansen netted a pair of goals in a 4-1 win Saturday night against Rutgers.
Men’s Tennis
- Freshman Mikael Torpegaard completed his impressive run at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship on Monday, taking down top-seeded Jared Hiltzik of Illinois to win the singles title in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The Denmark native is the second Ohio State freshman to win an ITA Midwest singles title.
Women’s Soccer (6-9-3, 3-6-3 B1G)
- Behind three goals in the final 15 minutes, the Ohio State defeated Nebraska, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.
- Nikki Walts scored the game-winner for the Buckeyes in the 87th minute when her shot from 20 yards off a Kayla Varner corner deflected off a Nebraska defender and past the goalkeeper.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
- Ohio State opened its dual meet season with three-straight days of competition and four victories Thursday-Saturday.
- The Buckeyes defeated Miami (Ohio) 175-115 Thursday and Oxford, Ohio, before returning to Columbus for Friday victories over Purdue (165-134) and Cincinnati (238-60). OSU capped the stretch with a 222-95 win against Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, Saturday.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
- Ohio State defeated Cincinnati, 160-119, Friday evening in the squad’s season-opening dual at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes recorded the fastest time in 13 races, while earning the top score in both the one- and three-meter diving events.
