Athletes of the Week
Senior Michael Hartfield and freshman Billy Stanley won Big Ten crowns on the final day of competition at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, helping No. 23 Ohio State to a sixth-place team finish. Hartfield won his second conference title of the weekend, following up his win in the long jump Saturday with a Sunday victory in the triple jump. He is the first Buckeye to double up in the triple and long jumps at the Big Ten outdoor championships since Joe Greene in 1989. Stanley won the first Big Ten title of his career (javelin) in impressive fashion, setting a Big Ten meet- and Ohio State school-record of 75.23m (246-10.00) on his first attempt to capture gold.
The Ohio State women’s track and field 4×1 team – juniorAshlee Abraham, junior Aisha Cavin, senior Christienne Linton and junior Adenike Pedro – opened the final day of the 2013 Big TenOutdoor Championships with a first-place time of 44.76, thethird-consecutive 4×1 crown for the Buckeyes at the conferencechampionships. Later in the day, freshman Alexis Franklin earned her first Big Ten title with a time of58.31 in the long hurdles. Senior Alexis Thomas won her second-consecutive Big Ten title in thehammer throw Friday afternoon, becoming the third Buckeye in schoolhistory to win back-to-back conference titles in the hammer (KatyCraig, 2001-2002 and Veronica Jatsek, 2007-2008).
Baseball (33-18, 14-7 Big Ten)

Ohio State dropped a 9-2 decision to Georgia Tech Tuesdayevening at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Jacob Bosiokovic went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.Bosiokovic’s home run in the seventh tied him for the team leadwith Ryan Cypret and Pat Porter at four apiece.
Tim Wetzel notched his seventh multi-hit game of the season and32nd of his career Tuesday.
Behind timely hitting and a strong outing out of Ryan Riga in his first-career start, Ohio State defeatedGeorgia Tech, 3-2, Wednesday evening at Nick Swisher Field at BillDavis Stadium.
Riga picked up the win to move to 2-0 on the season, allowing oneearned run on five hits while striking out five over a career-high7.0 innings pitched. Wetzel finished the day 1-for-2 with a two-rungo-ahead single in the bottom of the seventh.
Riga set a career high with 7.0 innings pitched and tied his careerhigh with five strikeouts.
Ohio State dropped both games of a doubleheader against No. 6Oregon Saturday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. TheDucks won the opener, 3-1, in 11 innings before taking thenightcap, 4-0.
Joe Ciamacco, Kirby Pellant, Jacob Bosiokovic, Aaron Gretz and Brad Hallberg each had two hits for the Buckeyes in game one,while Brad Goldberg tied his career-high 7.0 innings, allowing oneunearned run on four hits while striking out six.
Hallberg notched his eighth multi-hit game of the season andPellant tallied his 15th in the opener. Ciamacco had a pair of hitsfor his 13th multi-hit game, Wetzel tallied his eighth and Gretzrecorded his seventh.
Wetzel made the play of the day when he leaped to rob ScottHeineman of a home run to left in the fourth inning of Game2.
The announced attendance of 2,225 marked a season high at NickSwisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Ohio State dropped its series finale against No. 6 Oregon, 1-0,Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Porter went 2-for-4 for the Buckeyes while Jaron Long suffered the tough-luck loss to fall to 6-5 on theseason.
Long set a career high with nine strikeouts and has struck out atleast seven hitters in three of his last four starts while Porternotched his team-high 16th multi-hit game.
The Buckeyes host No. 10 Louisville at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at NickSwisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
Women’s Golf
Head Coach: Therese Hession
Ohio State capped its 2012-13 season Saturday, finishing tiedfor 15th at the NCAA West Regional on the par 71, 6,267-yardStanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. The squad finished with a299 in the final round and totaled a 54-hole score of 899overall.
Seniors Amy Meier and Susana Benavides led the Buckeyes in the tournament to concludesuccessful collegiate campaigns. Meier, a Rochester Hills, Mich.,product, finished tied for 26th with a 7-over 220 following roundsof 73-74-73. Benavides tied for 55th overall with a 225(76-73-76).
Sophomore Jan Chanpalangsri and junior Allison Harper each tied for 72nd, having a three-round scoreof 228. Sophomore Claudia Lim closed out the buckeye lineup with a 237.
No. 10 Men’s Lacrosse (13-3)

Paced by six points from Logan Schuss and five by Jesse King, the third-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse teamdowned Towson, 16-6, in the first round of NCAA tournament actionSunday afternoon in front of 2,358 fans at Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes (13-3) advance to face Cornell in the quarterfinals at12:30 p.m. Saturday at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md.
Against Towson, Schuss had three goals and three assists, whileKing had four goals and a helper. Senior Dominique Alexander (1g, 3a), sophomore David Planning (2g, 2a) and freshman Carter Brown (3g, 1a) all had four points in the win. In all,nine Buckeyes had at least one point.
Senior Trey Wilkes won 18-of-23 faceoffs, part of a 19-for-24 day fromthe Buckeyes, and had a team-best seven groundballs, followed byjunior Michael Italiano with six. Ten Buckeyes had two groundballsagainst Towson.
Schuss moved his Ohio State career goals record to 145 and issecond in Buckeye history with 234 points, with at least one pointin all 61 collegiate games. He leads the Buckeyes with 43 goals, 26assists and 69 points, the eight-highest single-season total inprogram history. In the Buckeyes’ three postseason games, Schuss,the ECAC Offensive Player of the Year, has 15 points.
King is second for the Buckeyes with 30 goals, 22 assists and 52points. He has 10 goals and 16 points in the Buckeyes’ threepostseason games, with five or more points in each game. His fourgoals vs. Towson matched his career high, set vs. Loyola in theECAC semifinals May 2.

Men’s Soccer

Former Buckeye Roger Espinoza, who led the Ohio State men’ssoccer team to the 2007 national championship game, continues tomake history on the international stage after helping Wigan to the2013 Football Association Challenge Cup Saturday against ManchesterCity. The win came just days after the Honduras native’s first goalin the Premiership, the opening score in the Latics’ match withSwansea.
Espinoza is one of just two players bred in the Big Ten to play inthe Premier League, joining Indiana’s Juergen Somer who was agoalkeeper with the Queens Park Rangers in 1996-97. He will go downas the first field player from the league and the first to score agoal, adding to his growing list of history-making accomplishments.As a member of the Honduran national team, Espinoza also becameOhio State’s first World Cup and men’s soccer Olympic product in2010 and 2012, respectively.
Softball (34-22, 10-13 Big Ten)

With the bat of sophomore Shelby Pickett, Ohio State came back to win, 8-4, against No. 9seed Iowa in the opening round of the 2013 Big Ten SoftballTournament Thursday afternoon in Lincoln, Neb. Pickett, a native ofTemecula, Calif., launched her first career grand slam in thebottom of the fifth to help the No. 8 seed Buckeyes (34-21) advancein the first league conference tournament since the 2008campaign.
Offensively, Pickett posted a career-high four RBI, while juniorMelissa Rennie and sophomore Caitlin Conrad each notched two hits, respectively. Overall,eight different Buckeyes crossed the plate vs. the Hawkeyes. In thecircle, redshirt junior Melanie Nichols pitched two innings of shutout relief work toimprove to 6-2 overall, allowing just one hit, no runs and twowalks.
Ohio State fell short, 3-2, against No. 1 seed Michigan in thequarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament Friday afternoon at BowlinStadium.
Offensively, the Scarlet and Gray posted seven hits and had arunner reach base safely in all seven innings. Junior Evelyn Carrillo went 3-for-4 with a double, while sophomoreConrad went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Sophomore pitcher Alex DiDomenico received the loss to fall to 15-11 overall,throwing 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits withthree strikeouts.
Junior Carillo went 3-for-4 and now has 13 multi-hit games in 2013and 34 multi-hit performances this season.
Freshman Cammi Prantl claimed her 10th stolen base of 2013 in the top ofthe fifth.
Sophomore Maddy McIntyre drew a walk in the top of the fifth to extendher reached base streak to 18-consecutive games.
No. 5 Men’s Tennis (33-2)

Ohio State shut out Washington, 4-0, in the second round of theNCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Team Championships Saturday afternoonat the Varsity Tennis Courts in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes willplay the winner between No. 12 Texas A&M (18-12) and Texas(17-8) in the round of 16 at 5 p.m. May 16 at the Khan OutdoorTennis Complex/Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign, Ill., on theUniversity of Illinois campus.
In one of their more dramatic doubles wins of the season, theBuckeyes were aided by a break leading 8-7 at No. 1 doubles tocapture their 33rd doubles point of the season. The tandem ofPeter Kobelt and Connor Smith, ranked 12th in the latestIntercollegiate Tennis Association polls, took a 40-0 lead en routeto lifting the Scarlet and Gray to the doubles-point win.
Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen gave the Buckeyes the early advantage at thesecond position when they beat Viktor Farkas and Max Manthou,8-4.
Playing as a Buckeye for the final time in Columbus, McCarthycompleted his singles match in impressive fashion, relinquishingjust three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory vs. Farkas at thefourth position.
With Ohio State owning a 2-0 lead, Smith was the next Buckeye offthe courts following his 6-2, 6-2 win vs. Egger at No. 3singles.
Redshirt junior Kobelt wrapped up the afternoon and propelled OhioState to its 33rd win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win againstManthou.
Ohio State advanced to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Division IMen’s Tennis Team Championship Friday afternoon after beatingCleveland State, 4-0, at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus,Ohio.
Against Cleveland State, Ohio State won the doubles point for the32nd time in 2013. The Buckeye pair of Blaz Rola and Kevin Metka was the first off the courts when they beat JorgVan Der Vloet and Joe Vanmeteer, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles. Soon after,Kobelt and Smith, ranked 12th in the nation, handed Ali Shabib andNiklas Jonsson an 8-2 loss.
In singles action, Rola, ranked 12th nationally, earned OhioState’s second team point of the match after defeating Van DerVloet, 6-1, 6-2, at the top position. McCarthy lifted the Buckeyesto a 3-0 advantage following his 6-3, 6-1 win vs. Jonsson at fourthsingles. Freshman Constantin Christ wrapped up the Ohio State victory with his6-1, 6-1 victory against Vanmeter at No. 6 singles. Christ is 21-3overall, including a 16-0 mark on court No. 6.
No. 23 Men’s Track & Field

The 23rd-ranked Ohio State men’s track and field team competedat the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships Friday-Sunday at JesseOwens Memorial Stadium.
Freshman Joseph Velez starred on day one for Buckeyes, using apersonal-best mark of 62.07m (203-8.00) to finish fifth overall andcollect four points for the Buckeyes.
Senior Michael Hartfield won his third-consecutive Big Ten title inthe long jump Saturday afternoon at the 2013 Big Ten OutdoorChampionships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, highlighting day twoat the conference finals for No. 23 Ohio State.
The Manchester, Conn., native cleared 7.69m (25-2.75) on his firstattempt to secure 10 points toward Ohio State’s team score and theunprecedented three-peat – he is the first Buckeye to schoolhistory to win three-consecutive conference titles in the longjump.
In addition to Hartfield’s 10-point jump, senior Korbin Smith earned three points for OSU with a sixth-placemark of 7.30m (23-11.50).
Junior Cory Kunze and senior Heath Nickles also scored for the Buckeyes on day two,collecting a total of six points in the decathlon. Kunze used apersonal-best score of 7227 to place fifth overall, while Nicklescompiled a season-best point total of 7150 to take seventh.

Sophomore Timothy Faust earned a bronze medal with a third-place time of10.44 in the 100m, a personal best. Faust earned more hardware witha runner-up finish in the 200m in a time of 21.15.
Senior Chris Fallon turned on the jets over the final 400 meters inthe 1500m to capture six points and the bronze medal in a time of3:48.37.
The Buckeyes return to action at the NCAA East Regional May 23-25in Greensboro, N.C.
Women’s Track & Field

Senior Alexis Thomas won her second-consecutive Big Ten title in thehammer throw Friday afternoon at the 2013 Big Ten OutdoorChampionships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The winning throw of 64.19m (210-7.00) was nearly 11 feet betterthan the runner-up mark from Melissa Kurzdorfer of Penn State(60.91m/199-10.00). Thomas is the third Buckeye in school historyto win back-to-back conference titles in the hammer (Katy Craig,2001-2002 and Veronica Jatsek, 2007-2008).
Adenike Pedro earned the Buckeyes four points with afifth-place finish in the long jump (5.85m/19-2.50).
Ohio State came on strong on day three of the 2013 Big Ten OutdoorChampionships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to finish with 86points, good for a third place team finish.
Ohio State earned two event titles on the final day of competition:an upset victory of Illinois in the 4x100m relay and an impressivegold-medal performance by freshman Alexis Franklin in the 400m hurdles.

Cavin earned a top-3 finish in the 400m, crossing the line with atime of 54.08 behind Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer (52.27) andMinnesota junior Megan Geyen (53.91).
The Ohio State team of Brianna Neitzel, Johnson, freshman SoSo Walker and Franklin finished the 4x400m relay in secondplace with a time of 3:38.76.
