Ohio State men’s hockey set to open regular season

The Ohio State men’s hockey team opens its 2013-2014 regular season Friday, taking on Miami (Ohio) in a home-and-home series. Coming off a 9-1 victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues in an exhibition game last Saturday, the Buckeyes (16-17-7 in 2012-13) are looking to start the regular season strong against the No. 2-ranked Redhawks.

Herb Kleine is quite familiar with the turf at Ohio Stadium. As a sousaphone player from 1979 to 1982, Kleine dotted the I in Script Ohio on four occasions. Recently, he was allowed to do it again, as a member of the OSU alumni band Sept. 7 during the Buckeyes’ game against San Diego State.

The sound of music filled the Ohio State women’s basketball practice gym last week, a welcome change to the 11 players on the roster. “The music is definitely new for this year,” senior forward Darryce Moore said. “We all like it, and there’s the fact that it pumps us up, too.” She smiled at the change that the new coaching staff has brought to the program.

There is no such thing as an easy week in Big Ten women’s volleyball with eight teams, including the Buckeyes, ranked in the top 25. After splitting its first four matches of conference play, the No. 14 Ohio State women’s volleyball team is scheduled to return to St. John Arena this weekend for matches against No. 19 Wisconsin and No. 11 Minnesota.

The Indianapolis Colts signed former Ohio State running back Dan Herron and linebacker Andy Studebaker to their active roster yesterday. Herron replaced Ahmad Bradshaw, who was placed on the season-ending injured-reserve list because of a neck injury.

The No. 12 Ohio State women’s volleyball team returns from its first road trip of Big Ten play with one win and one more loss. The Buckeyes (14-2) still sit at .500 in conference play after their win over Indiana in Bloomington Saturday. The Hoosiers kept it close all the way as it took OSU five sets and a few extra points to come out on top.

C. Hyde shows `different hunger’ for the game in win against Northwestern

… Hyde showed that hunger Saturday, his third game back from suspension, with the biggest performance of his career. He gashed the Wildcats for a career-high 168 yards on 26 carries and scored three rushing touchdowns and also had 38 receiving yards on four receptions. With 206 yards from scrimmage, he accounted for more than 45 percent of OSU’s 451 yards of total offense.
