Ohio State Fencing Opens Season with OSU Duals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The OSU Duals begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the French Field House. The 13-team event continues throughout the day in a round robin format, with the Buckeye fencing team facing Case Western in their first bout. A full schedule is available below and admission is free.
Traditionally, Ohio State coaches use this event to debut the team’s younger talent, which this year includes 17 Buckeye freshmen.
A YEAR AGO
Last year, the Buckeyes swept the Duals,14-0, extending their undefeated streak at the event to nine-consecutive years. The men’s and women’s foil groups notched a total record of 119-7 highlighted by undefeated performances from Nina Stackhouse, Kyjah Coryat and Taylor McIntyre from the women’s unit and Bill Meyer from the men’s unit. The men’s sabre squad finished the day with a 42-0 record while the women’s squad totaled a record of 58-5.
OHIO STATE TO HOST 2014 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships will be hosted by the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The championships, taking place March 20-23, will be held at French Field House, with championship bouts decided inside St. John Arena.
This will be the fourth time Ohio State has hosted the championship (2008, 2011 and 2012).
BUCKEYES FINISH FOURTH IN 2013 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ohio State finished fourth place to extend their streak of top five finishes to 12 consecutive years at the event. The Scarlet and Gray earned 146 points with a third place finish from Mona Shaito in women’s foil and a first place finish from Marco Canevari in men’s epee.
Five other Buckeyes earned Top 10 finishes including Zain Shaito (6th, men’s foil), Daniel Tafoya (7th, men’s epee), Max Sterns (6th, men’s sabre), Katarzyna Dabrowa (6th, women’s epee) and Alison Miller (5th, women’s sabre).
UP NEXT
Following the conclusion of the OSU Duals, the Buckeye swashbucklers will travel to Cleveland to compete in the Junior North American Cup.
