Athletes of the Week
Ohio State men’s hockey senior goalie Brady Hjelle allowed just three goals in the Buckeyes’ series sweep of Lake Superior State, earning CCHA Warrior Goaltender of the Week honors for the fourth time this season. A native of International Falls, Minn., Hjelle made 64 saves to lead all CCHA goalies over the weekend, while his .955 save percentage was first among the conference goalies who started both games. Friday, Hjelle had 34 saves (including two on breakaways), stopping all 22 shots he faced in the first two periods. Saturday, Hjelle had nine saves in the first period and then stopped all 21 shots he faced in the final two periods as Ohio State won 6-1.
AlexNorris, a junior on the No. 15 Ohio State women’s swimming anddiving team, finished first in the 1650 freestyle with an NCAA “B”time of 16.25.61 to help the Buckeyes defeat Cincinnati 171-115last Saturday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The race marked thefirst time Norris, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, has swam the eventin her Buckeye career. Norris, who qualified for hersecond-consecutive NCAA championship in 2012, competed at the 2012U.S. Olympic Trials in the 200 and 400 freestyle events.
No. 11 Men’s Basketball (15-4, 5-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Iowa, 72-63, Tuesday night at Value CityArena.
Four Buckeyes reached double figures: Deshaun Thomas (16 points), Lenzelle Smith Jr. (12 points), Aaron Craft (12 points) and Evan Ravenel (11 points).
With four steals in the game, junior guard Aaron Craft became the all-time leader at Ohio State with 208steals. He was previously tied with Jay Burson (1986-89) for thetop spot (204).
Craft recorded five assists against the Hawkeyes and has handed out36 assists in the last seven games. Craft also made a career-higheight free throws.
Amir Williams recorded a career-high six blocked shots.
The Buckeyes defeated Penn State, 65-51, Saturday afternoon at theBryce Jordan Center in State College, Pa.
Three Ohio State players reached double figures: Sam Thompson (16 points), Deshaun Thomas (11 points) and Lenzelle Smith Jr. (11 points).
Thompson set a career best with six field goals made and scored indouble figures for the first time in a Big Ten game. He shot 85.7percent (6-of-7) from the field.
Smith Jr. scored all 11 points in the second half, and tied acareer best with seven free throws made.
The Buckeyes return to action this week with a game againstWisconsin Jan. 29 at Value City Arena and a game against Nebraskain Lincoln. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
Women’s Basketball (11-9, 1-6 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to No. 8 Penn State, 71-56, Sunday afternoon atValue City Arena.
Senior guard Tayler Hill scored 28 points against the Nittany Lions; she hasnow scored in double-figures in 53 consecutive games, the longestactive streak in the Big Ten and the fourth longest in DivisionI.
With 28 points, Hill moved into seventh place in Ohio Stateall-time scoring with 1,780 points. Hill passed Kim Jordan who had1,753 from 1977-80.
Hill has scored 20 or more points 11 times this season and leadsthe Big Ten with 24.5 points per game in Big Ten play.
After missing more than four games because of a knee injury,redshirt senior guard Amber Stokes played 20 minutes Sunday, scoring four points andhanding out two assists.
Behind Hill, freshman guard Ameryst Alston scored 12 points.
Junior center Ashley Adams scored five points, pulled down 12 rebounds andhanded out four assists.
The Buckeyes return to action against Nebraska Jan. 31 at ValueCity Arena. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
Fencing
Head Coach: Vladimir Nazlymov
Ohio State traveled to New York to participate in the St.John’s Invitational on Jan. 26 and the NYU Invitational Jan.27.
Seniors Daniel Tafoya and Marco Canevari led the men in the epee weapon category. Tafoyawon eight of his 13 bouts while Canevari defeated his opponentseven out of 11 times.
In men’s foil, junior Zain Shaito won nine of 15 bouts after not giving up a singlewin to Harvard.
Senior Max Stearns led the Buckeye foilists with a record of11-4.
For the women’s squad, senior Katarzyna Dabrowa finished 12-3 in epee without losing a boutto St. John’s or Harvard.
Mona Shaito dominated her St. John’s and Penn State opponentsin foil to post a 10-5 finish.
In sabre, sophomore Celina Merza also finished with a 10-5 record.
Ohio State will return to the strips Feb. 2 at the NorthwesternDuals in Evanston, Ill.
No. 5 Men’s Gymnastics (5-2-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State placed second at the inaugural Metroplex ChallengeFriday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth,Texas.
The Buckeyes tallied a team score of 429.400 to finish in secondplace behind No. 4 Oklahoma but ahead of No. 6 Illinois and No. 8Iowa who finished third and fourth, respectively.
Ohio State won event titles on floor exercise (74.800) and vault(73.200) and placed second overall on pommel horse (71.800) andparallel bars (70.300).
The Buckeyes also won two individual event titles as sophomoreDanny Steiner claimed the floor exercise title with acareer-high 15.750 and senior John Laing claimed the pommel horse title with a 15.20.
Redshirt junior Michael Newburger placed second on pommel horse with a 15.00while sophomore Drew Moling placed second on vault with a 14.85 and truefreshman Jake Martin finished third on high bar having tallied a14.75.
Ohio State returns to action in their first co-ed dual meet of theseason at No. 1 Penn State at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in State College,Pa.
No. 18 Women’s Gymnastics (2-2, 1-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State tallied a season high but No. 6 Nebraska came awaywith the 196.150-195.975 victory Friday evening at St. JohnArena.
The Buckeyes posted a 49.050 to open the meet on vault. JuniorSarah Miller led the Buckeyes and tied for the event title witha 9.925 while junior Melanie Shaffer and senior Aly Marohn each tallied a 9.850, a season best for Shaffer anda season best tying score for Marohn.
On bars, the Buckeyes tallied a 48.675 led by junior Victoria Aepli who earned a season-high 9.775 and Marohn whonotched a 9.750.
Ohio State tallied a season-best 49.075 on balance beam. Millerpaced Ohio State again on beam, tying her career best with a 9.950to win the event while Marohn tallied a 9.850.
The Buckeyes finished the meet on floor exercise with a 49.175.Miller and Shaffer tied for the event title with a 9.900.
Up next, the Buckeyes hit the road to take on Penn State at 7 p.m.Feb. 2 in State College, Pa.
Men’s Hockey (10-11-5, 9-6-3-1 CCHA)

Ohio State skated to a 3-2 win over Lake Superior State Fridaynight in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period on goals from redshirtfreshman Riley Simpson and junior Curtis Gedig. The team extended the lead to three on a goalfrom sophomore Tanner Fritz early in the second period.
Senior Brady Hjelle played all 60 minutes in goal and had 34 saves forthe Buckeyes, including stopping two breakaways.
Ohio State completed the series sweep Saturday night in Value CityArena, defeating the Lakers 6-1 with points from 12 players and 30saves from Hjelle.
Junior Alex Szczechura had two goals to lead the Buckeyes, while Fritzhad two assists and sophomore Ryan Dzingel and freshman Anthony Greco each had a goal and an assist for twopoints.
Simpson and junior Alex Lippincott also tallied scores in the game.
Ohio State’s six goals were a season high and the most sincetopping Michigan, 6-5, Nov. 19, 2011.
Hjelle is second in the NCAA with a .946 save percentage, while his1.60 goals-against average ranks third.
Szczechura’s two goals matched his career best, first set Nov. 12,2012 at Michigan State. It was his sixth career two-point game andfirst of the year.
Fritz is on a six-game point streak with two goals, five assistsand seven points. It was his fourth two-assist game this year andsixth two-point outing of the campaign. Fritz leads the Buckeyeswith 15 assists and is second with 20 points, both careerhighs.
Dzingel leads the Buckeyes with 23 points and 10 goals and issecond with 13 assists. He is on a four-game point streak (1g, 5a,6p). Dzingel has six multiple-point outings on the year.
Gedig is on a three-game point streak, with two goals and anassist. He has seven points this year, with five helpers.
Lippincott’s goal was his first this season and first since Feb. 3,2012 vs. Michigan State.
The Buckeyes close out their four-game homestand next weekend whenthey host Notre Dame at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Value CityArena.
Women’s Hockey (15-9-2, 10-8-2 WCHA)

Ohio State dropped a 7-5 decision to Minnesota Duluth in a WHCAcontest Friday afternoon in Value City Arena.
Senior Tina Hollowell scored her ninth goal of the season at the 9:37mark in the first period. Sophomore Sara Schmitt, junior Ally Tarr, freshman Julia McKinnon and sophomore Kari Schmitt also had goals in the contest.
Tarr and McKinnon finished the game with three points apiece, eachhaving one goal and two assists each.
The Buckeyes fell to Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, in the second game ofthe weekend series Saturday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Senior Paige Semenza netted her 12th goal of the season in the secondperiod while Kari and Sara Schmitt tallied assists on the score, their 18th and 15thon the year, respectively.
Captain Hokey Langan brought the Buckeyes within a goal when shenotched her sixth goal of the season at the 4:42 mark in the third.Semenza and Hollowell picked up the assists on the score.
Ohio State travels to Bemidji State next Friday and Saturday, Feb.1-2. The puck is set to drop at 3:07 p.m. both days.
Men’s Lacrosse

The Buckeyes continued their preseason slate with a scrimmageat Johns Hopkins Saturday in Baltimore
Ohio State will host Syracuse and Robert Morris for scrimmagesSaturday in Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
In the preseason polls, the Buckeyes were ranked No. 18 in theUSILA Coaches poll and No. 20 in the Inside Lacrosse/Nike Mediapoll.
Pistol
Head Coach: James Sweeney
Ohio State tallied an aggregate score of 5,375 to place firstout of five teams at the OSU Winter Open Invitational at the Lt.Hugh W. Wylie Range.
Ohio State took first place in all three events of teamcompetition, scoring 1,025 in free pistol (half course), 2,142 instandard pistol and 2,208 in air pistol.
In individual competition, senior Jason Reineck won free pistol with a 261. Classmate Gary Reburn and junior A.J. Tourigny placed second and third having shot 257 and 254,respectively.
Robert Patton (competing unattached) earned first place in standardpistol. Behind Patton, junior Joe Totts placed second with a 560 and sophomore Greyson McCaig placed third with a 538.
Totts led the Buckeyes in air pistol, taking first place with a561. He placed second overall in the 3-gun aggregate with a totalscore of 1,369.
Junior Kimberly Hullings led Ohio State with a win in women’s sportpistol (564) and a second-place finish in women’s air pistol (365).With those scores, Hullings earned first place in the 2-gunaggregate (929).
The Buckeyes return to action at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range Feb.1-2 as hosts of the Collegiate Sectionals. Competition starts at 4p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday.
Rifle
Head Coach: Ryan Tanoue
Ohio State placed fourth at the Withrow Open at Murray StateSaturday, posting its best away score of the season with a4,606.
In smallbore the Buckeyes were paced by freshman Remington Lyman who equaled his personal best with a score of578. Lyman’s score also placed him fifth overall for theweekend.
Junior Amanda Luoma (568), freshman Alexander Kimura (568), sophomore Megan Polonsky (564), sophomore Greg Hagar (563) and redshirt junior Dan Chapman (552) rounded out team scoring for theBuckeyes.
In the air rifle competition Luoma led the way for the Buckeyeswith a season high 592. Luoma finished second overall in the airrifle competition for the weekend.
Lyman fired a personal best 582 in air rifle, while Polonsky (582),Hagar, (581), Chapman (578) and Kimura (571) rounded out a verysolid day for the Buckeyes in the event. Ohio State’s combined airrifle score of 2333 is a high for the season.
Ohio State concludes the regular season with a match at AkronSaturday, Feb. 2.
No. 10 Men’s Swimming & Diving

Ohio State downed Cincinnati, 152-133, Saturday afternoonduring Senior Day at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The Buckeyes jumped out to the early lead when the quarter ofjunior Garrett Trebilcock, sophomore Keanu Stevenson, senior Jason Schnur and senior Zach Birnbrich won the 200 medley relay with a time of1:28.80.
Senior Zach Holmes picked up his first individual win of the afternoonin the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.17, while Trebilcockpicked up the win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.35.
Stevenson earned another win in the 100 breaststroke with a time56.28 while senior Luke Stirton had a strong swim in the 200 butterfly as hetouched the wall first at 1:50.88.
Schnur had a strong outing in the 50 freestyle, finishing firstwith a time 20.58. Birnbrich continued the senior charge for theBuckeyes when he touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle with atime of 45.41.
Ohio State swept the Top 3 in the 200 backstroke led by sophomoreConnor McDonald in 1:51.53 followed by sophomore Dominic Pecze (1:53.50) and senior Andrew Spurling (1:53.66).
MacDonald earned his first career win in the 200 breaststroke witha time of 2:05.01 while sophomore Alex Osterhage cruised his way to a first-place mark of 4:42.29in the 500 freestyle.
Schnur (52.45) and Stirton (52.96) were neck-and-neck during the100 butterfly as the two OSU seniors went first and second,respectively. Sophomore Steven Zimmerman won the final individual event for theBuckeyes in the 400 medley with a time of 3:59.25.
In diving, junior Shane Miszkiel swept both diving events, winning the 1-meterspringboard with a score of 406.50, while picking up the victory inthe 3-meter with a score of 420.98.
The Buckeyes next face No. 1 Michigan in Ann Arbor Feb. 1-2. Themeet will start at 6 p.m. Friday night and 12 p.m. Saturdayafternoon.
No. 15 Women’s Swimming & Diving

Ohio State defeated Cincinnati, 171-115, on Senior Day Saturdayafternoon at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The Buckeyes began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay whenthe quartet of seniors Kelsey Moran, Kelly Titus, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro claimed first place with a time of 1:43.96.
In the 1650 freestyle event, junior Alex Norris earned an NCAA “B” time of 16.25.61 for firstplace, while Detro touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle witha time of 1:50.98.
In the 100 backstroke, freshman Reanna Dona had a day to remember as the first-year Buckeyeposted her first win of her career with a time of 57.12. ClassmateAnnie Lazor followed with her second career win in the 100breaststroke with a time of 1:05.54.
In the 200 butterfly, Severn continued to the momentum when she wonthe 200 butterfly with a time of 2:04.30.
Before the first break, freshman Annie Jongekrijg claimed her second career win in the 50freestyle with a time of 24.10.
In the 100 freestyle, Detro picked up her second win of her seniorday with a time of 51.73.
Lazor notched her second win of the afternoon in the 200breaststroke with a time of 2:20.06 while Draves posted her secondwin of the season with a time of 5:02.56.
Schmidtke, a native of Magdeburg, Germany, earned her first victoryin 2013 in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.15.
In the 400 individual medley event, Baird finished out her day ofswimming with a win in a time of 4:27.70. The Buckeyes closed out astrong afternoon of racing with a first-place finish in the 800freestyle relay. The group of Schmidtke, Gillig, Creran and Detrotouched the wall with a time of 7:33.99.
In diving, redshirt sophomore Cheyenne Cousineau continued her success, winning the 3-meterspringboard with a total score of 330.45.
Ohio State hits the road to compete at the NorthwesternInvitational Feb. 1-2 in Evanston, Ill.
Synchronized Swimming

Ohio State defeated Youngstown State, 7-0, Thursday afternoonat the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
In doubles play, the tandems of Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen, Kevin Metka and Hunter Callahan and Connor Smith and Chris Diaz all posted wins.
In singles play, Van Engelen, McCarthy, Smith, Diaz, Callahan andConstantin Christ all posted wins over Youngstown State.
The Buckeyes returned to the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center Thursdaynight, earning a 4-0 win over Cleveland State.
Ohio State has shut out three of its four opponents this season,surrendering just one point in a 6-1 victory over Xavier Jan.16.
Ohio State defeated Miami, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at the VarsityIndoor Tennis Center in the ITA Kick-Off Championship match. Withthe win, the Buckeyes clinched a spot in the ITA National TeamIndoor Championship Feb. 15 in Seattle, Wash.
Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka were the first Scarlet and Gray duo to win in thedoubles portion of the match, defeating Diego Soto and HenriqueTsukamoto 8-3. Securing the doubles point for the Buckeyes was thetandem of Blaz Rola and Connor Smith who defeated Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores8-4.
In singles action, Callahan, Diaz, Rola, Kobelt, Smith and McCarthyall posted wins.
The Buckeyes defeated Toledo, 4-0, Sunday evening at the VarsityIndoor Tennis Center.
Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith teamed up to defeat Tomas Stillman and NicholasWong 8-1 as the first Buckeye duo off the courts.
Playing at No. 3 doubles was the pair of Blaz Rola and Kevin Metka and they were victorious over Grant Adams andFrancisco Stuardo 8-2, earning the doubles point for the Scarletand Gray.
Hunter Callahan won in straight sets against Roberto Meza 6-0,6-0. Rola was next to win for Ohio State, dropping only one game toStillman en route to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Capturing the fourth andfinal point for the Buckeyes was the No. 1 Kobelt as he defeatedStuardo 6-1, 6-2.
Ohio State will take on No. 8 KU Singh, No. 16 Hernus Pieters, No.19 Nathan Pasha and the rest of the sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogsat noon Feb. 3.
Women’s Tennis (3-0)

Ohio State opened its home schedule with a 7-0 shutout ofToledo Wednesday morning at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
The Buckeyes dropped just one doubles match and won five singlesmatches in straight sets.
Ohio State clinched the doubles point with wins on courts one andtwo. The tandem of seniors Fidan Manashirova and Gabby Steele dropped just one game, while sophomore Kelsey Dieters and senior Kara Cecil won their match 8-2.
In singles play, Cecil earned a 6-1, 6-1 win, followed by a 6-2,6-1 victory by freshman Grainne O’Neill. Steele was a 6-0, 6-1 victor and Manashirovawon her match 6-2, 6-4. Dieters won her match 6-3, 6-3 whileTiffany Dittmer came from behind to win her match 6-2, 2-6, 1-0(3).
The Buckeyes notched their second shutout of the season againstCincinnati Wednesday night at the Varsity Indoor TennisCenter.
Ohio State swept the Bearcats in six singles matches and threedoubles matches. The tandems of Manashirova and Steele, juniorNoelle Malley and O’Neill, and Cecil and Dieters all won indoubles competition.
In singles competition, Cecil, Dieters, Steele, O’Neill, Malley andredshirt freshman Nicole Flower all posted wins.
The Buckeyes continue their homestand with Go Pink Day vs. EasternKentucky at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 at the Varsity Indoor TennisCenter.
Men’s Track & Field
Head Coach: Ed Beathea
Junior Demoye Bogle cruised to an easy victory in the 60m hurdlesSaturday afternoon at the Rod McCravy Memorial, highlighting OhioState’s two days of competition in Lexington, Ky. Crossing thefinish line in 7.83 seconds, the 11th-fastest time in Division Ithis season, Bogle bettered runner-up Milan Ristic of UNC Ashevilleby eight-tenths of a second.
Timothy Faust and Nick Batcha finished second and third for the Buckeyes withtimes of 21.34 and 21.63 in the 200m, respectively.
In the distance medley relay, Ohio State ‘A’ – Chris Fallon, Korbin Smith, Kurt Grove and Jackson Neff – took first place in 10:01.66, a top-15 time inDivision I at this point in the season.
In the 4x400m relay, the Buckeye ‘A’ team – Page, Brooks, Smith andAntonio Blanks – used a top-10 Division I time of 3:11.08 totake first place overall.
Ohio State travels to South Bend, Ind., Feb. 1 for the MeyoInvitational.
Women’s Track & Field

Ohio State competed at the Rod McCravy Memorial Invitational inLexington, Ky.
Sprinter Aisha Cavin and distance runners Michelle Thomas and Meredith Wagner were the top performers of the weekend for theBuckeyes. Cavin was a winner in the 200m and a bronze medalist inthe 400m, while Thomas and Wagner turned in impressive times in the3000m and 5000m, respectively.
Ohio State placed two individuals in the Top 5 of the 60m: seniorAshlee Abraham (third, 7.47 seconds) and senior Christienne Linton (7.52).
Cavin raced to an indoor personal-best time of 23.76 to take thewin in the 200m. Her winning time is the fourth-best indoor time inschool history and ranks among the Top 15 in Division I so far thisseason. Cavin also raced to a third place finish in the 400m with apersonal best time of 55.01.
A personal-best time of 9:44.52 – fifth-best in school indoorhistory – helped Thomas, a sophomore, to fourth overall in the3,000m.
Wagner, a junior, cruised to an easy win in the 5000m run Fridayevening, crossing the finish line in a time of 16:46.87, 25 secondsbetter than runner-up Mia Elbon. Sophomore Nicole Hilton (17:41.06) and junior Mallory Kreider (17:49.27) finished third and fourth,respectively.
In the distance medley relay, Ohio State’s ‘A’ team -Borchers,Olberding , freshman SoSo Walker and senior Tori Brink – took the title in a time of 11:43.88 Friday, thefifth-best DMR time in school history.
In the 4x400m relay, the Buckeye ‘A’ team – Walker, Johnson, Cavinand Olberding – finished third overall in a time of 3:46.96.
Ohio State travels to New York, N.Y., Feb. 1, for the New BalanceCollegiate Invitational.
No. 6 Wrestling (9-2, 3-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State had a bye week. The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 1when they host Illinois at 7 p.m. in Oak Harbor, Ohio.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (5-2, 2-0 MIVA)
Head Coach: Pete Hanson
Ohio State earned a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-22) win over MIVAnewcomer Lindenwood Saturday night at Hyland Arena to open theconference season.
Sophomore Michael Henchy finished with a .667 attack percentage aftertotaling a match-high 15 kills on 21 attempts. He added acareer-best three service aces and had two digs in the win.
Seniors John Tholen and Grayson Overman each totaled six kills, while classmateNick Gibson finished with five.
Tholen had a match-best four blocks for Ohio State, having two soloand two block assists. Overman and Gibson had two blocks each,while Gibson led the team with six digs.
The Buckeyes concluded the weekend with another sweep ofLindenwood, defeating the Lions 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) in St.Charles, Mo., Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz totaled 15 kills in the win to lead the Buckeyes,adding a career-high six digs.
Sophomore Michael Henchy had eight kills, while seniors Grayson Overman and Chen Levitan totaled five apiece.
Setter Peter Heinen had a match-high 34 assists and finished with fourdigs.
Defensively, Levitan had a team-best 10 digs and libero Brennan Anderson added nine. Overman notched a team-best fiveblocks, while Tholen finished four. The Buckeye blockers had 10.0total blocks in the match.
