Athletes of the Week
Men’s basketball junior forward Deshaun Thomas earned Big Ten co-Player of the Week honors after averaging 21 points in a road win against Purdue followed by a victory against previously unbeaten and second-ranked Michigan. Thomas tallied 22 points, seven rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist against the Boilermakers, following that performance by recording 20 points, four boards, an assist and a steal versus the nationally ranked Wolverines. Thomas, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind., shot 51.6 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point range and is the Big Ten’s leading scorer. This is his second Player of the Week award of the season and the third of his career.
Women’s basketball freshman guard Ameryst Alston earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors afteraveraging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in a pair ofroad contests against Minnesota and nationally ranked Purdue. Inthe road game at Minnesota, Alston scored 15 points on 6-of-7shooting against the Gophers, also handing out four assists withthree rebounds. Against Purdue, she played a school-record 55minutes in a triple-overtime thriller against the Boilermakers andfinished with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-20 from the fieldand added six rebounds and five assists. Alston is averaging 12.0points per game in Big Ten play and leads the team with 49 assists.
No. 11 Men’s Basketball (13-3, 3-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Purdue, 74-64, on Tuesday night at MackeyArena in West Lafayette, Ind. The win marked the 100th Big Tenregular-season victory for Thad Matta at Ohio State.
Junior forward Deshaun Thomas led all scorers with 22 points. With 1,202points, Thomas remained No. 34 on the all-time scoring list at OhioState, needing just nine more points to pass Luke Witte forthirty-third all-time.
Thomas also tied a career high with two steals.
Junior guard Aaron Craft scored 15 points against the Boilermakers,including 13 in the second half.
Senior forward Evan Ravenel tied a career high with three blocks, sophomoreguard Shannon Scott tied a career high with six rebounds and juniorguard Lenzelle Smith Jr. collected a season-high 10 rebounds.
Ohio State defeated No. 2 Michigan, 56-53, Sunday afternoon atValue City Arena.
The Buckeyes have won eight of the last nine meetings with theWolverines and hold a nine-game winning streak in Columbus in theseries. Overall, Ohio State owns the series lead with a 93-72record and a 53-26 lead in Columbus.
Head coach Thad Matta is 17-3 vs. Michigan as head coach of theBuckeyes.
Deshaun Thomas led all scorers with 20 points and moves to No.33 on the all-time scoring list at Ohio State. He has now scored indouble figures in all 16 games this season and totaled 20 or morepoints in nine contests.
With four rebounds, sophomore forward Sam Thompson passed 100 for his career at Ohio State(102).
Lenzelle Smith Jr. tied a season high with 10 rebounds.
The Buckeyes return to action at Michigan State in East Lansing,Mich., Jan. 19. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Women’s Basketball (10-7, 0-4 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to Minnesota, 83-74, Thursday night at Williams Arena in Minneapolis.
Senior guard Tayler Hill paced the team in scoring with 24 points. She wasfollowed by freshman guard Ameryst Alston who scored a season-high 15, and sophomore guardRaven Ferguson and junior center Darryce Moore who each chipped in 12.
Moore was just shy of a double-double as she led the team witheight rebounds.
Ohio State fell to No. 12 Purdue, 82-75, in triple overtime Mondaynight at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind.
Ameryst Alston played all 55 minutes for the Buckeyes, scoring24 points. Darryce Moore recorded her first career double-double with 16points and 12 rebounds.
Junior center Ashley Adams scored seven points and had seven rebounds whilefreshman guard Cait Craft, who received her first career start, had fivepoints, three steals, three assists and five rebounds.
Ohio State returns to action at Value City Arena Jan. 17 to faceIndiana in a 7 p.m. tip. The Buckeyes will then play at WisconsinJan. 20 in a 3 p.m. tip.

Ohio State concluded its preseason schedule, Saturday, atits annual Alumni Exhibition at the Steelwood Athletic TrainingFacility.
The Buckeyes open the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 19 at theWindy City Invitational in Chicago, Ill. The meet is set to beginat 7 p.m.
No. 14 Women’s Gymnastics (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell at No. 9 Oregon State, 195.375 – 195.300,Friday night at Gill Gymnasium.
The Buckeyes began the meet on bars, tallying a 48.575. SeniorAly Marohn led Ohio State with a 9.775 while freshman Maddie Herr saw her first action of the season, recording a9.725.
Marohn, along with junior Sarah Miller, paced the Buckeyes on vault in the secondrotation, recording a 9.775 as Ohio State recorded a 48.700.
Ohio State posted a 48.825 on floor exercise in the third rotation.Miller and junior Melanie Shaffer led the Buckeyes on the event, each tallying a9.825 to tie for third.
The Scarlet and Gray finished the meet on balance beam. Shafferposted a team-best 9.825 to finish first on the event while Marohnand Miller each recorded a 9.800 to tie for second.
Shaffer also posted a season-best 39.075 as the lone Buckeye in theall-around.
The Buckeyes open their home slate against Iowa at 4 p.m. Jan. 19in St. John Arena. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students.Tickets are available on OhioStateBuckeyes.com. Men’s Hockey (8-9-5, 7-4-3 CCHA)

Ohio State defeated Ferris State, 3-1, Friday night atEwigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
The Buckeyes led the 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes. At the 8:22mark, junior forward Alex Szczechura tallied the first Ohio State goal with anassist from sophomore forward Max McCormick. Junior forward Chris Crane picked up the second goal for the Buckeyes on awrist shot at the 14:46 mark, with senior Travis Statchuk picking up the helper.
Crane added his second goal of the game just 1:52 into the thirdperiod, assisted by sophomores Chad Niddery and Nick Oddo.
Senior goaltender Brady Hjelle ranks first in the NCAA with a 1.44 goals-againstaverage and second with a .952 save percentage.
Crane had his second two-point game of the season. It was his thirdtwo-goal game and first since Nov. 19, 2011 at Michigan.
Oddo’s assist was his first point of the season. He played for thefirst time since Oct. 27 at Bowling Green, missing the last 14games with an injury.
Freshman defenseman Sam Jardine returned to action after missing the last 12 gameswith an injury.
Szczechura has goals in back-to-back games and a point in seven ofthe last 11 games.
Ohio State lost to Ferris State, 3-1, Saturday night in game two ofthe CCHA series at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
Max McCormick put in the rebound of an attempt from sophomoredefenseman Al McLean at the 7:54 mark of the third period to score thelone goal for the Buckeyes.
McLean’s assist was his first point of the season.
McCormick is second on the team with seven goals and ranks thirdwith 12 points.
The Buckeyes will play a second-consecutive CCHA road series,traveling for two games with Northern Michigan in Marquette, Mich.,next weekend. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturdayin the Berry Events Center.
No. 9 Women’s Hockey (14-7-1, 9-6-1 WCHA)

Ohio State fell, 4-1, to No. 8 Wisconsin Friday night atLabahn Arena in Madison.
Junior forward Ally Tarr tallied the lone score for the Buckeyes, her fourthof the season. Senior Tina Hollowell and junior Kara Gust had the assists.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp had 24 saves on a night in which Wisconsinoutshot the Buckeyes 32-24.
Ohio State fell, 2-1, to No. 8 Wisconsin in the second game of theseries Saturday night at Labahn Arena in Madison.
Ally Tarr scored the lone Ohio State goal for thesecond-consecutive night with a strike at the 14:11 mark of thesecond period. Sophomores Kari Schmitt and Sara Schmitt tallied the assists on the play for theBuckeyes.
Chelsea Knapp stopped 28 shots for the Scarlet and Gray.
Ohio State returns home to the OSU Ice Rink next weekend to hostSt. Cloud State Jan.18-19.

Ohio State competed at the Camp Perry Open in Camp Perry,Ohio Jan. 12-13.
Rifle

Ohio State competed in the seventh annual Camp Perry OpenAir Rifle Competition hosted by the Civilian Marksmanship ProgramJan. 12-13. The two day national competition featured 170competitors from all over the country.
Junior Amanda Luoma and sophomore Greg Hagar led the team as Luoma fired scores of 588 on bothmatch days to place third overall in the competition while Hagarfired scores of 582 on both match days and placed seventh overalland third in the junior division.
Senior Robert Mangaudis III had a solid weekend posting scores of 576and 579 to place 13th overall, while freshman Remington Lyman posted his season and personal best in airrifle on day one with a 578 and followed with a 575 on day two,finishing just behind Mangaudis in 14th.
The Buckeyes next travel to West Point, N.Y., Jan. 19 to competeagainst Army.
No. 6 Men’s Swimming & Diving

Ohio State improved to 5-0 in dual competition this seasonwith a 177-102 win over Wright State Friday at McCorkle AquaticPavilion. The Buckeyes claimed wins in all 16 events vs. theRaiders.
Long distance specialist Alex Miller claimed victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of9:18.89. Zach Holmes placed first in the 200 freestyle with a 1:41.12while freshman Josh Fleagle notched a time of 1:41.69 to place second.
In the 100 backstroke, Steven Zimmerman touched the wall in 1:51.87. Jason Schnur placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of20.77.
Following a 15-minute break, Tim Phillips earned his first win of the year in the 100freestyle with a time of 45.43, while Connor McDonald notched a win in the 200 backstroke with a timeof 1:52.20 – six seconds better than the second placefinisher.
In the 200 backstroke, Dak Stone claimed the top time with a 2:05.82.
The 500 freestyle was won by Miller, who finished thesecond-longest event of the evening with a time of 4:34.52.
In the 100 butterfly, Luke Stirton touched first with a time of 50.33 and in theindividual medley, Phillips placed first with a time of1:52.53.
In diving, Shane Miszkiel took the 1-meter event with a score of 380.55,and followed it with a victory in the 3-meter springboard with ascore of 457.28.
The Buckeyes begin Big Ten competition next weekend, traveling toBloomington, Ind., for a tri-meet against Indiana and Iowa Jan.19.
No. 15 Women’s Swimming & Diving

Ohio State opened the 2013 portion of its dual meet season with a 171-102 win over Wright State Friday at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
Ohio State’s 200-yard medley relay started things off as thequartet of Annie Gillig, Katy Luchansky, Reanna Dona and Ashley Vance touched the wall first with a time of1:49.33.
Junior Kristin Fulcher claimed the win in the 1000 freestyle with atime of 10:26.25, while senior Angela Severn notched first place in the 200 freestyle in1:54.17.
In the 100 backstroke, the squad swept the Top 3 spots led byVance, who earned a season-best 58.78 followed by Dona with a timeof 58.80.
Senior Emily Creran swam the 100 breaststroke for the first time thisseason, winning the event with a time of 1:06.94.
Junior Alex Norris continued the momentum in the 200 butterfly as shecruised her way to a first-place finish with a time of2:05.88.
In the 50 freestyle, junior Phoebe Carter placed first with a timeof 24.25 followed by classmate Shannon Draves (24.48) and sophomore Kayla Hammerberg (25.01).
After a 15-minute break, Creran earned her second win of the nightin 53.23, while Draves swam to a first-place finish in the 200backstroke (2:03.90).
Sophomore Lauren Davis earned her first win of the season in the 200breaststroke (2:27.67) while Severn claimed her second victoryagainst the Raiders when she collected a time of 56.80 in the 100butterfly.
Lazor earned the win in the final individual event of the eveningin the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 2:08.39, while Lauren Massey, Severn, Dona and Gillig in 1:39.25.
In diving, Cheyenne Cousineau claimed victory on the 1-meter springboardwith a total score of 330.83.
Ohio State defeated Toledo, 189-104, Saturday afternoon at theMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The Buckeyes were guided by their senior class, which combined fornine individual wins and 15 Top 3 finishes.
The squad opened the afternoon with a victory in the 400 medleyrelay after seniors Kelsey Moran, Angela Severn, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro touched the wall first in 3:46.10.
A trio of OSU seniors swept the Top 3 places in the 100 backstrokeguided by Emily Creran, who won the event in 56.56. She was followed byKelsey Moran (56.62) and Lauren Massey (57.24).
Angela Severn also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.25, whileDraves earned a win in the 200 butterfly with a time of2:01.54.
Draves won her second event against the Rockets in the 100butterfly with a time of 55.72 while the 400 individual medley waswon by Severn (4:23.55).
Ohio State next travels to Ann Arbor to face Michigan Jan. 18 atDonald B. Canham Natatorium.

Ohio State opened the 2013 season with the BuckeyeInvitational Friday night at French Field House.
The Buckeyes finished 1-2 in the 60m, with sophomore Nick Batcha taking first in a personal-best time of 6.83 andjunior Brandon Blackwell finishing second in 6.93.
In the 60m hurdles, junior Justin Hines crossed the finish line in a first-place time of8.24 seconds, followed by sophomore Derrick Anderson in 8.48.
In the 200m, Batcha made it two-for-two on the day with a win(21.69). Sophomore Timothy Faust claimed runner-up honors (21.72) and freshmanEric Metoyer placed third (23.19).
In the 400m, freshman Champ Page was a winner in his Ohio State debut, crossing theline in 48.52 while sophomore Antonio Blanks was the runner-up (48.87) and redshirt juniorJavon Walker took third (49.16).
Senior Marvel Brooks placed first in the 800m with a time of 1:56.55,while junior Kurt Grove finished second in 1:57.78.
Redshirt senior Chris Fallon won the mile in 4:13.05 while redshirt freshmanJosh Sabo finished third in 4:22.26.
Redshirt sophomore Jackson Neff earned a personal-best of 8:29.39 in the 3000m,while freshman Jordan Redd placed third in 8:43.32.
Redshirt senior Michael Hartfield opened his indoor season with a personal-bestjump of 7.98/26-2.25, while senior Derek Blevins (6.95m/22-9.75) and senior Korbin Smith (6.76m/22-2.25) placed second and third,respectively.
In high jump, sophomore Brant Reardon took first place at 2.03m/6-8.00, followed bysophomore Devin Smith (2.03m/6-8.00) and freshman Jack Kincade (1.93m/6-4.00).
In triple jump, redshirt freshman Julian Vann was the winner with a jump of 14.50m(47-7.00).
In weight throw, redshirt senior Billy Gehring was second at 18.53m (60-9.50) and freshmanJoseph Velez was third at 18.49m (60-8.00).
In pole vault, junior Cody Marshall cleared the bar at 4.85m to earn the win.Redshirt senior Heath Nickles finished second at 4.70m and junior Tyler Borton placed third at 4.55m.

Ohio State opened the 2013 season with the BuckeyeInvitational Friday night at French Field House.
In the 60m, senior Ashlee Abraham placed second (7.45) followed by junior Adenike Pedro (7.46).
In the 60m hurdles, 2012 national champion and former BuckeyeChristina Manning, sponsored by Adidas, cruised to an easyvictory in 8.20. Senior Christienne Linton was third in 8.52.
Abraham captured first place for the second time in the 200m,crossing the line in 24.61.
In the 400m, sophomore Aisha Cavin crossed the line in first place with a time of57.05.
In the 600m, freshman Cheyenne Hoerr won in 1:34.58. Freshman SoSo Walker took second (1:35.31) and freshman Rebecca Rings was fourth (1:37.61).
In the 800m, former Buckeye Shaniqua McGinnis used a time of 2:12.59 to take first place.Sophomore Janel Olberding was the runner-up in 2:14.53 while sophomoreKatie Betts finished third (2:21.70).
In the 3000m, sophomore Michelle Thomas claimed victory with a time of 10:00.99 whilesophomore Nicole Hilton placed third with a time of 10:22.93.
In the mile run, senior Tori Brink (5:02.46) and sophomore Katie Borchers (5:02.85) completed the race in first and secondplace, respectively.
Senior Alexis Thomas placed first with a throw of 20.11m in the WeightThrow while freshman Alyssa Gary made her Buckeye debut with a second place finishin the shot put with a throw of 12.98m.
In pole vault, freshman Emily Schwartz cleared the bar at 3.20m for second place.
In high jump, sophomore Jordan Moxley took first place with a leap of 1.67m, whilePedro took first in long jump with a 5.79m jump and junior Bianca Walton placed first in triple jump with a 11.60mjump.
Ohio State’s distance medley relay `A’ team of freshman Tammy Berger, sophomore Katie Betts, Borchers and senior Tori Brink placed first with a time of 11:50.26, while the OhioState 4x400m relay `A’ team of Franklin, Cavin, sophomore Alexandria Johnson and Walker won their race in 3:52.30.
Ohio State next travels to Bloomington, Ind., for the GladsteinInvitational Jan. 18.
No. 5 Wrestling (7-2, 1-2 Big Ten)

Ohio State dropped a 25-9 decision to No. 3 Minnesota Fridaynight in St. John Arena.
The match between the Buckeyes and Gophers was a back-and-forthaffair through the first five bouts, with Ohio State taking a 9-8lead heading into intermission. However, five consecutive lossesbetween 165 pounds and heavyweight set Ohio State back in itssecond league loss of the season.
Senior Nick Triggas gave Ohio State an early 3-0 advantage when heposted a 6-4 decision over No. 13 David Thorn. Holding on to a slim5-4 lead in the third period, Triggas’ final escape of the matchsecured his 15th win of the season, and the Russ HellicksonWrestler of the Match Award.
Sophomore Hunter Stieber decisioned No. 11 Nick Dardanes in the 141-poundmatchup to put the Buckeyes out in front, 6-4.
The Buckeyes return to action Jan. 18 when they travel toBloomington, Ind., to face Indiana in a 7 p.m. tilt. Two days lateron Jan. 20, the Buckeyes will host Wisconsin at 2 p.m.
No. 10 Men’s Volleyball (2-2, 0-0 MIVA)

Ohio State kicked off the 2013 Outrigger Hotels and ResortsInvitational with a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 15-12) victoryover host Hawai’i late Thursday on the campus of the University ofHawai’I at Manoa in Honolulu.
The win marked the first for the Buckeyes over the Warriors in fourattempts.
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Lutz totaled a career-best 20 kills with four blocksassists and two service aces.
Sophomore Michael Henchy notched a career-high 17 kills with 13 digs forhis first double-double of the season.
Senior Chen Levitan also picked up a double-double in the victory,finishing with 16 kills and a career-best 10 digs.
Redshirt sophomore setter Peter Heinen finished with a season-high 58 assists and 13 digsfor his first double-double of the season while senior Grayson Overman had a match-best six blocks and classmateJohn Tholen totaled seven kills and one block.
Ohio State fell to No. 5 UCLA Friday in a 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 18-25,25-18, 15-13) match on the second day of the Outrigger Hotels andResorts Invitational.
Michael Henchy paced the Ohio State offense with 16 kills on 28attempts for a .536 attack percentage. He added a service ace andthree block assists in the match.
Andrew Lutz finished with 12 kills and added a career-best fivedigs for Ohio State.
John Tholen totaled seven kills and four blocks while Grayson Overman had a team-high six blocks. Libero Brennan Anderson notched a career-high 14 digs in theloss.
Ohio State fell to No. 7 Penn State, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-22)Saturday night to conclude the Outrigger Hotels and ResortsInvitational.
Chen Levitan led the Buckeyes with 11 kills, while Brennan Anderson totaled a career-best 16 digs. Grayson Overman had a match-high six blocks.
The Buckeyes continue their long road swing, traveling to Loretto,Pa., to face Saint Francis Jan. 20. The match is set for 3p.m.
