Buckeyes Announce 2012 Schedule – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lori Walker, Ohio State women’s soccer head coach, announced the Buckeyes’ schedule for the 2012 season Tuesday. The Buckeyes take on five 2011 NCAA tournament teams and play 11 games at home at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
After exhibitions against NCAA Tournament teams Louisville and Miami, Fla., Ohio State opens on the road at Hofstra and Rutgers, Aug. 17 and 19, respectively, before returning to Columbus for a six-game homestand beginning with the opener against Northeastern at 7 p.m. Aug. 24. During that stretch at home, the Buckeyes also welcome Maryland, a team that reached the Sweet 16 a year ago, Syracuse, Missouri, Duquesne and open Big Ten play against Minnesota Sept. 16.
The Buckeyes then hit the road for a Sept. 21 matchup against 2011 Big Ten tournament champion Illinois and a contest against Northwestern Sept. 23 in Evanston. Ohio State returns home for a pair against Big Ten tournament teams Penn State (Sept. 27) and Wisconsin (Sept. 30) and receive a week off before hosting Purdue Oct. 7.
A trip to Iowa Oct. 12 and Nebraska Oct. 14 follows before an Oct. 19 game against Michigan and a Senior Day home finale against Michigan State Oct. 21. The regular season concludes Oct. 26 at Indiana before the Big Ten tournament Oct. 3-Nov. 4, also in Bloomington.
A few notes about the Buckeyes’ 2012 opponents:
– Maryland (Aug. 26): Went 12-6-4 last season and reached the NCAA Sweet 16; finished No. 11 in final NSCAA rankings but reached as high as No. 3 during the season
– Missouri (Sept. 6): Finished last season 12-8-1 after a loss in the Big 12 tournament; defeated Ohio State, 1-0, in Columbia
– Illinois (Sept. 21): Went 17-5-2 in 2011 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament; won Big Ten tournament after advancing on penalty kicks against Ohio State in quarterfinals; lost to Ohio State, 2-1, in regular season
– Penn State (Sept. 27): Won Big Ten regular season with a 10-1-0 record, finishing 21-5-0 overall after a Sweet 16 appearance; lost to Illinois in Big Ten championship game and defeated Ohio State, 3-1, last season in University Park
– Wisconsin (Sept. 30): Finished 2011 with a 10-7-3 record after a Big Ten tournament loss to Illinois; lost to Buckeyes, 1-0 last season in Madison
