COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a team total of 894, the No. 22 Ohio State women’s golf team closed regular season play with a win at their own Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus. The Buckeyes tallied a third round score of 289 at the par 72, 6,268-yard Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club to secure their win by a 16-stroke margin over second-place Michigan State.
The Buckeyes’ win at home was their second victory of the season and their first at the Lady Buckeye since winning in 2009.
Also clinching a win was Rachel Rohanna. Leading after scores of 75 and 69 in day one, the Waynesburg, Pa., product carded a final round of 4-under 68 to take medalist honors by eight strokes. Totaling 212 (-4), Rohanna notched four birdies throughout round three and 11 throughout the two-day tournament.
After finishing runner-up at the tournament in 2010, the win was the first of Rohanna’s career and the first Buckeye to earn medalist honors since In Hong Lim won the Lady Buckeye in 2009. Rohanna’s 54-hole score was a tournament low when playing on Scarlet.
With a final score of 73 that included three birdies, freshman Kendall Prince concluded the event tied for third at 226.
Also finding a slot in the top 5 was junior captain Amy Meier who tallied an even 72 to finish tied for fourth at 228. The Rochester Hills, Mich., native’s only slip came with a bogey on hole No. 11 which she countered with a birdie four holes later.
After back-to-back rounds of 78, freshman Claudia Lim fired a 76 to tie for 14th at 232.
Totaling 242, senior Vicky Villanueva and freshman Jan Chanpalangsri each tied for 43rd. Villanueva earned a score of 82, while Chanpalangsri notched a 79.
Carding a final score of 75, junior Susana Benavides was Ohio State’s top competitor competing as an individual only. Breaking into the top 10 with a 230 total, Benavides finished tied for ninth.
Also competing for the Buckeyes was sophomore Alex Brown and freshman Sheridan Balyeat. Brown finished in 66th at 258 after a final round of 83, while Balyeat fired an 84. Balyeat did not place after a scoring error disqualified her in round two.
The Buckeyes will begin postseason play April 27-29 at the Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind.
