No. 2 Buckeyes Win Doubleheader to Move to 23-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The six-time defending Big Ten champion and No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team (23-2; 5-0 Big Ten) won both of its matches Sunday as part of a doubleheader. In the first match, the Buckeyes downed Iowa 7-0 in their first match at the new outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts to move to 5-0 in the Big Ten. The team also was victorious in second match of the day against Youngstown State 6-0 at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center.
Against Iowa, Nelson Vick earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6 vs. Joey White to give Ohio State a 4-0 advantage and guarantee the victory for the Buckeyes. It was the 14th-consecutive win vs. the Hawkeyes for Ohio State.
In doubles, Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen downed Garret Dunn and Michael Swank 8-3 on court one to capture the doubles point for the home team. Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith were the first pair done after posting an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles vs. Matt Hagan and Will Vasos.
In other double action, Chase Buchanan and Kevin Metka handed Tom Mroziewicz and Jonas Dierckx an 8-6 loss on court three. It was the first time Buchanan and Metka have been on the same side of the net during doubles play.
In singles, Hunter Callahan easily won his match vs. Connor Gilmore 6-0, 6-3, while Kobelt defeated Dunn 6-3, 6-1 to give Ohio State a 3-0 lead. Vick would soon follow with the match’s fourth point.
In other action, Van Engelen was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Vasos, Buchanan won 6-2, 6-3 vs. Hagan at the No. 1 position and Vick downed White 6-3, 6-3.
Against Youngstown State, the Buckeyes played all six singles matches to completion and did not play any doubles.
Buchanan netted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles vs. Tariq Ismail for his 19th win of the season to clinch the Buckeye victory, earning the match-winning fourth point.
Kobelt gave Ohio State the early lead after a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles vs. Silviu Mistreanu. He moves to 3-0 on court two this season and 18-9 overall. Steven Williams gave up no points in a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Felipe Rosa at No. 6 singles. It was the senior’s first match of the season.
Smith extended the lead to 3-0 after he moved to 22-5 on the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Dawould Kabli. Buchanan’s win came shortly after.
The lead became 5-0 after Van Engelen’s 6-2, 6-3 win on court four. The win was the Netherlands native’s 20th win of the season. Vick was the last Buckeye finished, beating 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. He moves to 10-4 overall.
Up next, Ohio State will meet Wisconsin in Madison at 3 p.m. April 6. The team will look to extend its Big Ten win streak to 85 consecutive matches vs. the Badgers.
