Athletes of the Week
Women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Mari Hole was named Big Ten Player of the Week after leading the Buckeyes to a 2-0 finish in Big Ten play last week as the squad defeated Northwestern (Nov. 7) and Illinois (Nov. 10). She totaled 40 kills over nine sets played, averaging 4.44 kills per set. She led the team with 42.5 points for a 4.72 average and had 25 digs for a 2.78 average on the week. Hole’s performance helped Ohio State reach its fourth-straight 20-win season and the team now holds a 20-8 overall record. The Buckeyes are also currently tied for third in the Big Ten with an 11-5 record.
Men’s cross country senior Donny Roys has been selected to compete at the NCAAChampionships Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. Roys was an automaticqualifier based on his individual 11th-place finish (31:19) at theGreat Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis., Nov. 9. This will be Roys’third appearance at the NCAA Championships, but his first timebeing selected as an individual. The team made the championshipshis freshman and junior seasons. Roys was selected Second-TeamAll-Big Ten last season as well as winner of the Big TenSportsmanship Award. He finished 95th at the 2011 10k NCAAchampionships with a time of 30:59.
No. 4 Men’s Basketball (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Thad Matta
The Buckeyes season-opening game against Marquette aboard theUSS Yorktown Nov. 9 was canceled when officials, coaches andadministrators believed continuing condensation made the makeshiftcourt too dangerous to play.
Ohio State returned home to host Albany Nov. 11, defeating theGreat Danes, 82-60, at the Schottenstein Center.
Junior guard Aaron Craft paved the way for the Buckeyes with 20 points,while junior forward Deshaun Thomas scored 19 points and junior guard Lenzelle SmithJr. and sophomore forward LaQuinton Ross scored 18 and 10 points, respectively.
The Buckeyes shot 57 percent from the field (32 of 56) and made 12of 20 shots from beyond the arc.
Ohio State returns to action against Rhode Island in Uncasville,Conn., Nov. 17 in a 5 p.m. tip. The Buckeyes will then faceWashington or Seton Hall Nov. 18 in a 4:30 p.m. tip.
No. 20/21 Women’s Basketball (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to No. 7 Notre Dame, 57-51, in the firstwomen’s game ever played on an aircraft carrier (USS Yorktown) inCharleston, S.C.
Senior guard Tayler Hill led the Buckeyes with 18 points, whileredshirt-senior guard Amber Stokes scored 10 and junior center Ashley Adams collected a double-double with 10 points and 11rebounds.
The Buckeyes return to action against Cincinnati Nov. 14, hostingthe Bearcats in an 8 p.m. tip at the Schottenstein Center.
Men’s Cross Country

Ohio State competed at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 9 inMadison, Wis.
The Buckeyes placed eighth behind senior Donny Roys, who earned All-Regional honors with an 11th-placetime of 31:19.
The remaining Top 5 finishers for the Scarlet and Gray were allfreshman, as Brian Hannaford finished 39th with a time of 32:07, Curtis Hanle and Nicholas Pupino finished 63rd and 67th,respectively, with times of 32:32 and 32:37, and Blake Taneff finished 89th with a time of 33:04.
Senior Donny Roys will advance and compete at the NCAA Championships,held Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.
Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Khadevis Robinson
Ohio State competed at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 9 inMadison, Wis.
The Buckeyes finished sixth overall, behind sophomore Michelle Thomas and junior Meredith Wagner who both earned All-Regional honors with 20th(20:50) and 25th (20:58) place finishes, respectively.
Senior Tori Brink (30th, 21:05), sophomore Nicole Hilton (42nd, 21:28), and sophomore Katie Borchers (49th, 21:33) also scored for the Scarlet andGray.
The Buckeyes now await an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships,which will be held Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.
Fencing
Head Coach: Vladimir Nazlymov
Ohio State fencers completed four days of competition at theDivision I North American Cup tournament in Virginia Beach, Va.,Nov. 12.
Overall, 19 Buckeyes participated in the tournament, with threeswashbucklers finishing Top 10 and seven earning spots in the Top25. Senior Katarzyna Dabrowa led the team by earning seventh place inwomen’s epee.
Junior Zain Shaito garnered eighth place in men’s foil, earninganother Top 10 title for the team, while sophomore Mona Shaito finished 14th for the Buckeyes on the women’sside.
Sophomore Celina Merza offered direction for the women’s sabre group byposting a 10th place finish.
The Ohio State fencing team will compete next Dec. 7-10 at theDivision I North American Cup in Milwaukee, Wis.
No. 6 Football (10-0, 6-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Urban Meyer
Ohio State is co-champion of the Big Ten Conference LeadersDivision, earning no less than a share of the division title withits undefeated conference record. Wisconsin and Penn State are each4-2 and a game-and-a-half back of the Buckeyes with two games leftto play in the season. Any combination of an Ohio State win andPenn State and Wisconsin losses will clinch the Leaders Divisiontitle outright for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes had a bye week this week; Ohio State returns to actionagainst Wisconsin in Madison Nov. 17. The game is set for a 3:30p.m. kickoff and will air on ABC or ESPN2.
Men’s Hockey (2-3-1, 1-1-2-1 CCHA)
Head Coach: Mark Osiecki
Ohio State opened its home schedule with a 1-1 tie and shootoutwin vs. Alaska Nov. 9 in Value City Arena.
Sophomore Max McCormick scored just 15 seconds into the third period todeadlock the game and senior goalie Brady Hjelle made 34 saves in the Buckeye net throughovertime.
In the shootout, redshirt freshman Riley Simpson put Ohio State on the board and sophomoreRyan Dzingel scored the shootout winner in the sixth roundafter a save by Hjelle to open the round.
The Scarlet and Gray fell to Alaska, 3-1, the following night atValue City Arena.
Freshman goalie Collin Olson had 42 saves, and junior Chris Crane put Ohio State ahead 1-0 at 19:15 of the firstperiod with a 5-on-3 goal but the Buckeyes were unable to maintainthe lead.
Ohio State will continue its four-game homestand when it hostsNorthern Michigan Friday and Saturday (Nov. 16-17) at 7:05 p.m. inValue City Arena.
No. 8 Women’s Hockey (9-3-0, 7-3-0 WCHA)

Ohio State had a bye week this past weekend; the Buckeyesreturn to action Nov. 16-17 against Wisconsin at Value City Arenain Columbus. The games are set for 2:07 p.m. both afternoons, andmark the first regular season women’s hockey games played in thefacility.
Ohio State women’s hockey senior forward Minttu Tuominen and junior defenseman Annie Svedin along with former Buckeyes Lisa Chesson, TessaBonhomme and Natalie Spooner represented their respective countries at the2012 Four Nations Cup this past week, in Vantaa and Kerava,Finland.
Tuominen represented Team Finland, while Svedin is skated with TeamSweden. Chesson was with Team USA, while Bonhomme and Spooner werewith Team Canada.
Pistol
Head Coach: James Sweeney
The pistol team hosts Akron Nov. 17 at the Lt. Hugh W. WylieRange. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m.
The Buckeyes enter the match coming off of recent wins at Purdue(4,616-3,620) Oct. 28 and at Texas A&M (6,316-5,000) Nov.3.
The Buckeyes swept each event at Purdue, outshooting theBoilermakers in free pistol (1,007-669), standard pistol(2,218-1,677) and air pistol (1,481-1,274).
Ohio State senior Gary Reburn placed in each event for the Buckeyes, taking firstin air pistol (375), tying for second in free pistol (255) withteammate Jason Reineck, and finishing third in standard pistol(518).
At Texas A&M, the Buckeyes also swept each event in opencompetition. The Scarlet and Gray was led by junior Joe Totts who took first place in both standard (553) and60-shot air pistol (555), and junior A.J. Tourigny who finished first in free pistol (516).
With his fourth-consecutive win in standard pistol, Totts has nowplaced first in standard pistol in each match this season.
No. 12 Rifle
Head Coach: Ryan Tanoue
Ohio State was in action Nov. 10-11, hosting the defending NCAANational Champions TCU as well as Nebraska, Nevada and UTEP at theLt. Hugh W. Wylie Range.
The Buckeyes put in a solid performance on Saturday, tallying 4,594points overall. TCU tallied 4,708 points, while Nebraska and Nevadatallied 4,642 and 4,626 points, respectively.
Ohio State was led by junior Amanda Luoma in both smallbore (576) and air rifle (584).
On Sunday, Ohio State (4,609) fell one point short of itsseason-high against Nebraska (4,639), Nevada (4,629) and UTEP(4,503).
Luoma fired a personal best combined score of 1171, while freshmanAlexander Kimura fired a personal best 565 in smallbore.
The Buckeyes now have two weeks off before returning to action atthe USA Shooting Winter Air Rifle Championships in ColoradoSprings, Colorado, Nov. 29-Dec.2.
Men’s Soccer (6-10-3, 0-4-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: John Bluem
Ohio State concluded its season with a 2-0 loss to Northwesternin the Big Ten quarterfinals Nov. 7 at Lakeside Field in Evanston,Ill.
The Buckeyes held Northwestern scoreless for the final 78-plusminutes of regulation, but two early goals created a gap theBuckeyes were unable to overcome.
The Scarlet and Gray end the 2012 season with a 6-10-3record.
No. 25 Women’s Soccer (16-4-2, 8-2-1 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Lori Walker
The 16th-ranked and fourth-seeded Ohio State women’s soccerteam saw its season come to a close as Oakland advanced with a 3-1penalty kick victory after playing to a 1-1 draw in the first roundof the NCAA Tournament Nov. 10 at Jesse Owens MemorialStadium.
Senior forward Tiffany Cameron scored her 21st goal of the season in thesecond half to tie the game, 1-1, but despite the Buckeyes tallying15 second-half shots to two for the Grizzlies, the game went intoovertime.
Ohio State and Oakland were both unable to tally a game-winner ineither overtime period, sending the game into penalty kicks.Oakland held the advantage in penalty kicks, 3-2, to advance to thesecond round.
The 2012 seniors wrap up their careers as the winningest class inschool history with 59 wins. The group of Cameron, Lauren Granberg, Jessie Greenberg, Kendyl Reed and Aly Walker advanced to the NCAA Tournament all four seasons,reaching the first College Cup and earning the first Big TenChampionship in program history in 2010.
Cameron leaves Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ all-time leading goalscorer with 40 goals, and tallied 96 career points, also the mostin school history.
No. 22 Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head Coach: Bill Wadley
Ohio State pulled off two dual wins Nov. 9, defeating No. 13Tennessee in Knoxville, 176.50-123.50, and Miami (Ohio), 140-112,in Columbus at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
In Knoxville, the Buckeyes claimed the first three events of themeet as the 200 medley relay team comprised of Steven Zimmerman, Keanu Stevenson, Tim Phillips and Jason Schnur took first to start things off with a time of1:28.56.
Junior distance swimmer Alex Miller looked strong in his two races against theVolunteers, claiming wins in the 1000 freestyle (9:16.38) and 500freestyle (4:28.17), respectively. The Buckeyes held a 123.50-83advantage over the Volunteers following the conclusion of the 500freestyle.
In diving, Shane Miszkiel, the back-to-back Big Ten Diver of the Week, wonthe three-meter springboard competition with a total score of387.98, while Christian Holstein finished second in the one-meter event witha total score of 349.80.
In Columbus, led by first-year assistant coach Dave Rollins, the Buckeyes took event wins in 11 events vs. theRedHawks, while six underclassmen earned victories.
Ohio State is back in action at the Cleveland State InvitationalNov. 16-18 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Head Coach: Bill Dorenkott
Ohio State fell at No. 8 Tennessee, 191-109, Nov. 9 at theAllan Joes Intercollegiate Aquatics Center in Knoxville,Tenn.
Senior Emily Creran led the way for the Buckeyes, posting the team’slone individual victory in the 200 backstroke (1:59.63). Fellowsenior Kelsey Moran followed in second with a 2:01.97 performance.Both times were the fastest recorded for the Scarlet and Gray inthe 200 backstroke this season.
Junior Kelly Ann Baird led Ohio State’s distance contingent, with atime of 4:51.55 in the 500 freestyle and a time of 9:56.89 in the1000 freestyle.
The Scarlet and Gray also competed against Ohio University Nov. 10,at the Ohio University Aquatic Center in Athens, Ohio.
The Buckeyes defeated the Bobcats, 182-112, posting wins in 13 of16 events on the day.
Baird touched first in two individual events, the 200 freestyle(1:49.82) and the 200 backstroke (2:01.95).
In diving, two-time consecutive Big Ten Diver of the Week Cheyenne Cousineau won the 3-meter event with a 329.18 totalpoints.
Ohio State now has a brief break in action before hosting the OhioState Invitational Nov. 30 – Dec. 2.
No. 5 Wrestling

The Buckeyes did not compete this past week; Ohio State beginsthe dual schedule Nov. 15, when the Scarlet and Gray travels toDavidson, N.C., to take on Davidson at 7 p.m. The following day,the Buckeyes will face Virginia Tech at 7 p.m.
Men’s Tennis
Head Coach: Ty Tucker
In the first round of the 2012 USTA/ITA National IndoorIntercollegiate Championships, Ohio State redshirt junior Peter Kobelt suffered a three-set loss to Jonas Lutjen ofMississippi.
Kobelt, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, won the first set 6-3 beforeLutjen evened the match with a 6-2 second-set victory. In the thirdset, Lutjen prevailed in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (1) to advance to thesecond round.
The ITA National Indoors wrapped up the Buckeyes’ fall schedule.The team begins its spring season Jan. 16 with a home doubleheadervs. Butler at noon and Xavier at 6 p.m. at the Varsity IndoorTennis Center.
Women’s Tennis
Head Coach: Melissa Schaub
Ohio State concluded its fall season Sunday at the ASUThunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. Four Buckeyes traveled toArizona for the tournament, where they were joined by players fromMichigan, BYU, Cal, Kansas State, San Diego and host ArizonaState.
Senior Gabby Steele posted a singles win for the Buckeyes Sunday,defeating Cal’s Alice Duranteau in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (0).Steele and redshirt freshman Nicole Flower topped Cal’s duo of Lynn Chi and Duranteau, 8-3,Sunday as well.
For the tournament, Steele led the Buckeyes with four wins, goingundefeated after dropping her main draw first round match. Flowerand seniors Kara Cecil and Fidan Manashirova all had two singles victories on theweekend.
The Buckeyes open the spring season at West Virginia, taking on theMountaineers in Morgantown Jan. 19. Matches will begin at 12p.m.
No. 15 Women’s Volleyball (20-8, 11-5 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlston
Ohio State held on for a 3-1 (25-17, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20) winover Northwestern Nov. 7 at St. John Arena.
Senior Mari Hole notched her 14th double-double of the year, with ateam-best 19 kills and 13 digs. Senior Mariah Booth and junior Kaitlyn Leary each had 10 kills for Ohio State while sophomoreAnna Faul and senior Emily Danks had five apiece.
Defensively, the Buckeyes finished with 15 team blocks highlightedby Faul’s seven. She totaled a career-best four solo blocks withthree block assists.
Ohio State earned its fourth-straight 20-win season with a 3-2(25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 16-25, 17-15) win over Illinois Nov. 10 atSt. John Arena.
The win marked the first time since 2007 the Buckeyes have sweptthe series with the Illini.
Senior Mari Hole picked up her 15th double-double of the season,finishing with 21 kills and 12 digs to guide the Buckeyes to thewin. Her 21 kills was her seventh match this season with 20 ormore.
The Scarlet and Gray also totaled 16.0 blocks to tie a season-highthis year.
Ohio State returns to action Nov. 16 and 17, facing Purdue in WestLafayette, Ind., and Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., respectively.Game times are both set for 7 p.m.
