BTN: The Journey Returns Jan. 8 – Ohio State Buckeyes

CHICAGO – BTN’s first original series and its highest rated last year, The Journey: Big Ten Basketball 2012, presented by GMC, returns at 8 PM ET Sunday. The Emmy-nominated, documentary-style program takes viewers deep inside Big Ten basketball programs, spending consecutive days with different conference teams to follow the season’s most compelling storylines during the 10-week march toward the Big Ten Tournament.
The season premiere will feature Michigan State senior forward Draymond Green and the connection he shares with his hometown of Saginaw, Mich. The show also will introduce fans to Indiana freshman forward Cody Zeller and highlight a special moment as the 1987 Indiana National Championship Team returns to Bloomington. The first of the ten-episode series also examines Purdue coach Matt Painter’s Indiana roots, and show how two Ohio State McDonald’s All-Americans, Jared Sullinger and Deshaun Thomas, have taken different paths to success in Columbus.
“Our production staff uses a ‘cinéma vérité’ style of storytelling to give Big Ten basketball fans unprecedented access and insight into their favorite teams, coaches and student-athletes,” said Bill Friedman, BTN Senior Producer of Studio and Original Programming.
This is The Journey’s fifth season, following Minnesota Basketball, Illinois Football, Big Ten Basketball 2010 and Big Ten Basketball 2011. In 2010, the program was named co-winner of the best sports show/series by CableFAX magazine, along with ESPN’s 30 for 30 and received a Sports Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthology by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).
New BTN Series, ‘IMPACT The World’ Debuts Tuesday at 9:30 PM ET
The network rings in the New Year with a powerful new eight-part series, Impact The World, which will showcase some of the incredible Big Ten breakthroughs that are changing lives in the United States and around the world. Host Dennis Haysbert will unveil the stories that demonstrate how these advances impact each of us and the world in which we live. The new series debuts at 9:30 PM ET on Tuesday, Jan. 10, and will air weekly throughout the winter.
The first of the eight-episode series will highlight how three Big Ten universities are impacting the world by providing world-class treatment for recovering patients.
- Indiana University’s 2,500-acre outdoor recreational facility doesn’t look or feel like a hospital, but has served as the backdrop for hours of healing, thanks to some very special horses. IU’s two physical therapy programs, Horseshoes for Hope and Horses for Heroes, help disabled children and veterans, respectively, on the road to recovery. The horse therapy has helped 13-year-old Parker Eaton, who is autistic, improve her communication skills and Iraq war veteran Justin Inabinette deal with post-traumatic stress disorder.
- Thought control, the phenomenon of moving objects with the mind, is usually reserved for the realm of science fiction. But researchers at the University of Minnesota are blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Creating a technology called Brain Computer Interface, researcher Dr. Bin He is seeking medical advances to enable para- and quadriplegics, via thought, to move prosthetic limbs and help epilepsy patients control seizures.
- The University of Illinois was the first university to adopt sports and recreation programs for disabled students and is a leader in wheelchair-accessibility on campus, including an entirely wheelchair-friendly dormitory. Illinois junior Megan Blunk was a victim of a car accident at the age of 19 and through participation in the Illini wheelchair basketball team, has learned that her wheelchair does not define her.
Impact the World is the first BTN collaborative campus program series and will feature advances from each Big Ten university.
