No. 22 OSU Drops Four Set Decision to No. 12 UCLA – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State (4-2 overall) women’s volleyball team lost 3-1 (25-21, 25-19,23-25, 25-23) to 12th-ranked UCLA (5-0) on the second day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a season-high 21 points in the match with 16 kills (.268), one ace serve, a solo block and six assist blocks. Mari Hole added 13 points with 11 kills (.071) and two ace serves. UCLA’s Rachael Kidder posted a team-high 15.5 points with 15 kills (.243) and one assist block. Bojana Todorovic contributed 13 points with 11 kills (.269) and two aces with Mariana Aquino adding 12.5 points on eight kills (.400), two ace serves and five assist blocks.
UCLA opened set one with kills from Kidder and Kelly Reeves. A Bruin error and a kill from Danks tied the set at two. At nine-all, a kill from Reeves and one from Olivia Okoro gave UCLA an 11-9 lead. Trailing by three at 14-11, kills from Danks and Hole cut the Bruin lead to one at 14-13. With two kills from Aquino and two OSU errors, UCLA took a 17-13 lead. At 18-14, three Bruin blocks took the lead to 21-14. Two UCLA errors and a kill from Danks made it 21-17. A kill from Mariah Booth and two blocks from Danks and Booth cut the lead to one at 21-20. Two OSU errors and a Todorovic kill made it set point at 24-20. Danks, with a kill, stopped the set point at 24-21. UCLA won the set, 25-21, off an OSU error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Bruins hit .091 for the set to .024 for Ohio State.
UCLA held a 5-2 lead in set two before kills from Kaitlyn Leary and Amanda Peterson cut the lead to one at 5-4. At 6-5, a Bruin error tied the set at six and a Peterson kill and a Kelli Barhorst-Peterson block gave OSU an 8-6 lead. Leading 11-9, a Danks-Anna Faul block and a Davionna DiSalvatore ace serve gave Ohio State a 13-9 lead. The Bruins responded with the next three points to cut the margin to one at 13-12. At 14-13, a Megan Moenoa-Aquino block tied the set at 14. Their second block, an OSU error and an Aquino kill gave UCLA a 17-14 lead. Trailing 18-15, errors by both teams and two kills from Barhorst cut the lead to one at 19-18. Kills from Priscilla Duke-Ezeji and Reeves gave UCLA a 21-18 lead. A Bruin error and a kill from Reeves made it 22-19. A Reeves-Okoro block and a Kidder kill made it set point UCLA at 24-19. The Bruins, with a Todorovic ace serve, won the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. UCLA hit .242 for the set to .107 for the Buckeyes
Set three opened with kills from Danks and Booth for a 2-0 OSU lead. A Buckeye error, a Booth kill and a Danks-Barhorst block made it 4-1 OSU. Trailing by two at 7-5, a Moenoa kill and an OSU error tied the set at seven. Tied at eight, kills from Okoro and Kidder gave UCLA a 10-8 lead. OSU tied the set at 10 with two kills from Danks. Two Bruin errors gave OSU a 12-10 lead. At 20-18, a Kidder kill cut the lead to one at 20-19. A Danks-Booth block and a kill from Danks gave OSU a 22-19 lead. An OSU error and a Kidder kill made it 23-20. Bruin kills from Kidder and Aquino cut the OSU lead to one at 23-22. The Buckeyes reached set point at 24-22 with a kill from Danks. A Buckeye error stopped the set point at 24-23. Ohio State, with a Leary kill, won the set, 25-23, to cut the UCLA match lead to 2-1. Ohio State hit .234 for the set to .114 for UCLA.
In a close fourth set that saw 10 ties and six lead changes, UCLA broke a 14-all score with a Kidder kill. A Todorovic ace serve gave the Bruins a 16-14 lead. A kill by Hole cut the lead to 16-15. Kills from Zoe Nightingale and Kidder and an OSU error opened a 19-15 Bruin lead. OSU kills from Taylor Sherwin and Booth made it 19-17. At 23-21, a kill from Nightingale gave UCLA match point at 24-21. Two Bruin errors stopped UCLA match points to cut the lead to 24-23. The Bruins, with a kill from Todorovic, won the set, 25-23, to win the match, 3-1. Ohio State hit .303 for the set to .300 for UCLA.
For the match, UCLA hit .191 to .167 for Ohio State. The Bruins had a 53-51 edge in kills and a 52-47 advantage in assists. Sherwin posted a match-high 33 assists for OSU with Moenoa recording 29 and Lauren Van Oren having 13 for UCLA. Each squad recorded four ace serves with OSU’s Hole, and UCLA’s Todorovic and Aquino sharing match-high honors with two each. OSU gave up 11 service errors to five for the Bruins. Defensively, UCLA had a 61-55 advantage in digs with Rainey Gera recording a match-high 27. OSU’s Sarah Mignin collected a team-high 16 for OSU. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 13-9 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Danks posted a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. Moenoa and Aquino shared team-high honors for UCLA with five assist blocks each.
The Buckeyes will take Saturday off before return to action Sunday in the Classic when they face Long Beach State (2-3) at 3 p.m. HT. Friday, No. 10 Hawaii (5-0) defeated No. 23 Long Beach State, 3-2 (25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-11).
