No. 22 OSU Falls 3-0 to No. 10 Hawaii – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State (4-1 overall) women’s volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-14) to 10th-ranked Hawaii (4-0) on the first day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. OSU’s Emily Danks posted a co-match-high 14 points with 12 kills (.455), one ace serve and two assist blocks. Mari Hole added 12 points with 11 kills (.194) and two assist blocks. For Hawaii, Emily Hartong recorded a co-match-high of 14 points with nine kills (.571), two ace serves, a solo block and four assist blocks. Chanteal Satele added 13.5 points with 11 kills (.474), one ace serve and three assist blocks.
Hawaii opened the first set by scoring four consecutive points with kills from Jane Croson and Satele and blocks from Kanani Danielson-Hartong and Satele-Hartong. A Mariah Booth kill stopped the run at 4-1. Hawaii held a 9-4 lead when kills from Amanda Peterson and Hole and a Rainbow Wahine error cut the margin to two at 9-7. A Brittany Hewitt kill stopped the run at 10-7. Kills from Danks and Hole made it 10-9 Hawaii. Trailing, 12-11, an OSU error and a Croson kill held the lead for Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine reached set point at 24-18 with a kill from Satele. A Hewitt solo block ended the set at 25-18 for Hawaii. The Rainbow Wahine hit .233 for the set to .212 for Ohio State.
Set two saw the Buckeyes take a 4-0 lead with kills from Booth and Danks and blocks from Hole-Kelli Barhorst and Danks-Barhorst. A Hartong kill stopped the run but OSU kills from Barhorst and Hole made it 6-1 Buckeyes. Trailing, 17-13, two OSU errors and an ace serve from Satele cut the Buckeye lead to one at 17-16. At 19-18, a Danielson kill tied the set at 19. Hawaii took a 20-19 lead with a Mita Uiato kill. OSU tied the set at 20 with a kill from Danks. Hawaii took a 22-20 lead with kills from Hartong and Croson. OSU tied the set at 22 with a kill from Hole and a Rainbow Wahine error. Kills from Danielson and Danks made it 23-all. A Danielson kill gave Hawaii set point at 24-23. The Rainbow Wahine won the set, 25-23, with a kill from Croson to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Hawaii hit .371 for the set to .361 for OSU.
With the score tied at two in the third set, a kill from Hartong, a Danielson ace serve and a Hartong solo block gave the Rainbow Wahine a 5-2 lead to control the set. Hawaii expanded the lead to reach match point at 24-13 with a kill from Satele. OSU, with a Hole kill, stopped the match point at 24-14. A Hewitt kill gave the Rainbow Wahine a 25-14 set win to give Hawaii a 3-0 match victory. The Rainbow Wahine hit .370 for the set to .056 for the Buckeyes. For the match, Hawaii hit .326 to .210 for Ohio State.
The Rainbow Wahine had a 41-39 advantage in kills and a 39-37 margin in assists. Uiato posted a match-high 32 assists for Hawaii while Peterson recorded a team-high 28 for OSU. Hawaii had a 5-1 margin in ace serves with Danielson and Hartong recording a match-high two each. Danks had OSU’s only ace serve. Defensively, the Rainbow Wahine had a 43-35 advantage in digs. Croson posted a match-high 12 for Hawaii while OSU’s Sarah Mignin had a team-high 11 for the Buckeyes. At the net, the Rainbow Wahine had a nine-to-six margin in team blocks. Hartong recorded a match-high five blocks with a solo and four assists. OSU’s Barhorst posted a team-high four assist blocks for Ohio State.
Play continues Friday in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic with Ohio State playing 12th-ranked UCLA (4-0) at 5 p.m. HT. Last night UCLA defeated 23rd-ranked Long Beach State (2-2), 3-1 (25-19, 27-25, 21-25, 25-18). The second match will have Long Beach State playing host Hawaii at 7 p.m. HT.
