COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s golf team opened the 2011-12 season at the Mary Fossum Invitational and finished day one in second place with a 36-hole score of 28-over 604 with 18 holes left to play. The Buckeyes and the rest of the 12-team field conclude the tournament Saturday on the par 72, 6,236-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
Junior Amy Meier leads the Buckeye squad, finishing the first two rounds tied for ninth with a 5-over 149. The Rochester Hills, Mich., native shaved a stroke off her opening round of 3-over 75 and shot a 2-over 74 in the second round. Classmate Susana Benavides, from Cochabamba, Bolivia, carded a day-best 2-over 74 to start, but tallied six bogeys with one birdie in the afternoon for a 5-over 77. Her two-round total of 7-over 151 is tied for 12th.
Lone senior Vicky Villanueva kicked off the day with a team-best 1-over 73, having two birdies and just three bogeys in the morning. The Chacabuco, Argentina, product struggled in the afternoon and finished with a 7-over 79 to amass a two-round total of 152 to tie for 15th.
Participating in their first collegiate tournament were Jan Chanpalangsri and Kendall Prince. Chanpalangsri finished the day tied for 23rd with a 10-over 154 (79-75), while Prince is tied for 43rd with a 15-over 159 (77-82).
Competition concludes Saturday with 18 holes beginning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
