No. 25 OSU Defeats Albany, 3-1, in the Sports Imports Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State (8-3 overall) women’s volleyball team defeated Albany (3-8), 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 27-25) Friday in the first day of the Sports Imports Classic. OSU’s Mari Hole posted a match-high 27 points with 24 kills (.258), one ace serve and four assist blocks. Buckeye Emily Danks added 24.5 points with 20 kills (.219), three ace serves and three assist blocks. Casey Wright collected a team-high 17 points with 15 kills (.324), one solo and two assist blocks for Albany. Dunja Prgomet added 15 points with 14 kills (.159) and two assist blocks.
Ohio State opened set one with a kill from Hole and two from Danks for a 3-0 lead. Albany trailed, 9-7, when two OSU errors tied the set at nine. Tied at 17, a Hole-Anna Faul block and a kill from Danks gave OSU a 19-17 lead. A Traci Vandergrift kill cut the lead to one at 19-18. Two kills from Danks and an ace serve from Sarah Mignin opened a 22-19 Buckeye lead. At 23-20, an Erin Sekinger kill gave Ohio State set point at 24-20. A Sara Pope kill stopped the set point at 24-21. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Hole, won the set, 25-21, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .311 for the set to .175 for the Great Danes.
Albany, with a Wright-Prgomet block took a 1-0 lead in set two. OSU tied the set at one with a Hole-Faul block. Tied at eight, two Albany errors and a Hole ace serve and her kill gave Ohio State a 12-8 lead. At 13-10, OSU expanded the lead off a Great Dane error, a Kelli Barhorst kill and an ace serve and kill from Danks to open a 17-10 lead. OSU held a 23-16 lead and reached set point with a kill from Danks at 24-16. Mignin, with an ace serve, won the set, 25-16, to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .242 for the set to .122 for Albany.
Albany, with kills from Prgomet and Wright and an OSU error opened the third set with a 3-0 lead. The Buckeyes trailed, 5-1, before a 5-1 run tied the set at six. OSU trailed, 9-8, before a kill from Hole tied the set at nine. A Barhorst ace serve and a Taylor Sherwin solo block gave OSU an 11-9 lead. At 14-12, an Albany error and a Sekinger kill gave OSU a 16-12 lead. Albany trailed, 18-14, when a Samantha Brostrom kill and three OSU errors tied the set at 18. At 21-all, blocks from Faul and Hole and Sherwin and Faul gave OSU a 23-21 lead. An OSU error and a Prgomet-Gabby Whitworth block tied the set at 23. An Albany error gave OSU match point at 24-23. A Prgomet kill tied the set at 24. A Buckeye error gave Albany set point at 25-24. An Albany error tied the set at 25. A kill from Wright gave Albany a second set point at 26-25. An OSU error ended the set at 27-25 in favor of Albany to cut the OSU lead to 2-1. The Great Danes hit .104 to .051 for the Buckeyes.
Tied at one in set four, kills from Hole and Danks gave OSU a 3-1 lead. A kill from Wright and a Brooke Stanley-Wright block tied the set at three. Tied at eight, a Prgomet kill gave Albany a 9-8 lead. A Barhorst solo block tied the set at nine. A Prgomet kill and two OSU errors gave Albany a 12-9 lead. The Great Danes held a 16-12 lead when two kills from Danks, one from Hole and an Albany error tied the set at 16. Tied at 17, three OSU errors and a kill from Prgomet gave Albany a 21-17 lead. OSU responded with a Barhorst kill, two from Hole and an Albany error to set the set at 21. At 23-all, OSU reached match point with a kill from Danks at 24-23. A Prgomet kill tied the set at 24. A Faul-Hole block gave OSU a second match point at 25-24. Prgomet again stopped the point with a kill to tie the set at 25. A kill from Danks gave OSU a third match point at 26-25. OSU closed out the set with a kill from Danks to win, 27-25, and win the match, 3-1. Ohio State hit .224 for the set to .148 for the Great Danes.
Ohio State hit .211 for the match to .137 for Albany. OSU had a 60-50 advantage in kills and a 58-49 margin in assists. OSU’s Sherwin posted a match-high 54 assists while Stanley had 41 for the Great Danes. The Buckeye recorded seven aces to none for Albany. Danks posted a match-high three aces for the Buckeyes. Each squad gave up 10 service errors. Defensively, OSU had a 96-73 advantage in digs with OSU’s Mignin recording a match-high 30. At the net, OSU had an 11 to seven advantage in team blocks. Faul recorded a match-high seven assist blocks for Ohio State.
Results from the other matches today included Albany defeating Akron, 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) and Maryland defeating Akron, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21).
Ohio State continues play Saturday in the Sports Imports Classic with matches against Akron (3-9) at noon and Maryland (6-4) at 7 p.m. The other contest has Albany playing Maryland at 1 p.m. All matches are in St. John Arena
