No. 25 OSU Sweeps Akron in the Sports Imports Classic – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State (9-3 overall) women’s volleyball team defeated Akron (3-10), 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-17) in the second day of play at the Sports Imports Classic. OSU’s Kelli Barhorst posted a match-high 16.5 points against the Zips with 16 kills (.750) and one assist block. Mari Hole added 14 points with 13 kills (.333) and one ace serve. Akron’s Alex Cocklin recorded a team-high seven points with seven kills (.500) with Alex Wiederholt adding six with six kills (.136). With the first set tied at two, OSU scored the next five points with kills from Emily Danks, Erin Sekinger and Barhorst and two ace serves from Danks for a 5-2 lead. Leading, 8-5, kills from Hole and Taylor Sherwin and two Zip errors gave the Buckeyes a 12-5 lead. A kill from Cocklin stopped the run but OSU kills from Anna Faul and Hole pushed the lead to 14-6. A Cocklin kill made it 14-7. The Buckeyes took the lead to nine at 16-7 with a kill from Hole and her ace serve. OSU held a 17-9 lead and scored the final seven points to win the set, 25-9. The run began with two kills from Barhorst and Sekinger and one from Sherwin. A Kaitlin Leary ace serve made it 23-9. A Barhorst kill gave OSU set point at 24-9. The Buckeyes won the set, 25-9 with a Sekinger kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .457 for the set to .143 for Akron.
Akron opened set two with a Wiederholt kill and an OSU error for a 2-0 lead. OSU tied the set at two with kills from Danks and Sekinger. With the set tied at three, the Buckeyes, behind the serving of Danks, scored the next six points to open a 9-3 lead. The run included three ace serves from Danks, two Barhorst kills and a Zip error. At 12-6, an OSU error and a Paiton Twitty ace serve made it 12-8. After an Akron error, a Cocklin kill and an OSU error made the lead, 13-10. OSU held a 22-19 when a Kymberle Gordon-Chelsea Harvey block cut the lead to two at 22-20. A Zip error made it 23-20. A Gordon kill made it 23-21. An Akron error gave Ohio State set point at 24-21. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Sekinger, won the set, 24-21, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .250 for the set to .217 for Akron.
Tied at one in the third set, OSU kills from Barhorst, Danks and Sekinger gave the Buckeyes a 4-1 lead. An OSU error made it 4-2. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 7-2 with three consecutive kills from Hole. At 8-4, OSU extended the lead to 11-4 with a kill from Hole and two Akron errors. Leading 15-8, kills from Barhorst and Hole along with a Cocklin kill made it 17-9. Barhorst and Hole added kills to take the lead to 10 at 19-9. Akron, with kills from Wiederholt and Courtney Jarvis made it 19-11. At 20-12, a Leary kill and an OSU error made it 21-13. A kill from Leary and two from Harvey moved the score to 22-15 OSU. Kills from Danks and Jarvis made it 23-16. A Barhorst kill gave Ohio State match point at 24-16. Akron stopped the match point with a kill from Cocklin at 24-17. Ohio State won the set, 25-17, with a Leary kill to win the match, 3-0. The Buckeyes hit .436 for the set to .258 for the Zips.
For the match, Ohio State hit .387 to .213 for Akron. The Buckeyes had a 54-22 advantage in kills and a 52-22 margin in assists. Sherwin posted a match-high 47 for OSU with Harvey collecting 17 for Akron. Ohio State had an 8-1 advantage in ace serves with Danks posting a match-high five for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up nine service errors to five for the Zips. Defensively, Ohio State had a 41-34 edge in digs. Sarah Mignin posted a match-high 13 digs for the Buckeyes with Jill Paluch recording a team-high nine for Akron. At the net, each squad recorded one team block.
In the second match of the day, Albany (5-7) defeated Maryland (6-5), 3-0 (33-31, 25-23, 25-9).
Ohio State closes out play in the Sports Imports Classic when they host Maryland at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
