COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (13-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) returns to St. John Arena after four weeks on the road to host No. 19 Michigan (13-1, 2-0) and Michigan State (9-4, 1-1). The Buckeyes face the Michigan Wolverines at 7 p.m. Friday and the Michigan State Spartans at 7 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena. Friday’s match is a Scarlet Red Out, encouraging fans to wear scarlet and Saturday’s match is Dig Pink, encouraging fans to wear pink. The team will be available for autographs after the match Saturday. Buckeye Vision streaming and livestats will be available for both matches. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students per match. Ohio State students are free with their valid Buck-ID.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Coached by Geoff Carlston, the Buckeyes (13-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) split a pair of Big Ten Conference road matches last weekend. The Buckeyes won 3-2 (25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11) at previously undefeated Wisconsin and lost 0-3 (23-25, 9-25, 22-25) at ninth-ranked Illinois.
For the season, Katie Dull is the team leader in points per set with a 4.15 average. Emily Danks ranks second at 3.26 with Anna Szerszen third at 2.97. Dull is averaging a team-high 3.46 kills per set. Szerszen ranks second at 2.37 with Danksat 2.06. Kelli Barhorst is hitting a team-high .372 with Allie Schwarzwalder second at .314 and Mariah Booth third at .285. At setter, Betsy Hone is averaging 9.72 assists per set with Amanda Peterson second at 5.50. In aces per set, Danks leads the team with a .81 per set average with 42. Sarah Mignin ranks second at .31 (16) and Szerszen is third at .25 (13). Defensively, Mignin is averaging a team-high 3.12 digs per set. Dull ranks second at 2.06 with Hone third at 1.60. Mignin is the team leader in serve reception percentage at .956 handling 394 of 412 attempts. Susan Halverson ranks second at .954 (188 of 197) and Davionna DiSalvatore is third at .928 (194 of 209). At the net, Allie Schwarzwalder is averaging 1.48 blocks per set to lead the team with nine solos and 53 assists. Last week the Wolverines defeated Iowa, 3-0 (25-11, 28-26, 25-11) and 14th-ranked Minnesota, 3-2 (13-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-14) in home matches. Leading Michigan in points per set is Alex Hunt at 5.35. Courtney Fletcher ranks second at 2.95 with Jennifer Cross third at 2.85. Hunt is the team leader in kills per set with a 4.49 average. Fletcher ranks second at 2.23 with Claire McElheny third at 2.13. In attack percentage, McElheny leads the squad at .338. Hunt ranks second at .318 with Cross third at .302. At setter, Lexi Zimmerman is averaging 10.66 assists per set for the Wolverines. In aces per set, Hunt leads the squad with a .53 per set average with 26. Maggie Busch ranks second at .41 (18) and Zimmerman is third at .36 (18). Defensively, Sloane Donhoff has a team-high 3.75 digs per set average. Zimmerman, at 2.96, ranks second with Hunt third at 2.18. In serve reception percentage, Hunt leads the squad at .913 handling 115 of 126 attempts. Donhoff ranks second at .880 (125 of 142) and Busch is third at .877 (50 of 57). At the net, Jennifer Cross leads the team with a 1.16 blocks per set average with eight solos and 43 assist blocks. Michigan is averaging 18.55 points, 14.32 kills and 13.08 assists while hitting .279. The Wolverines average 1.84 aces, 14.90 digs and 2.39 blocks per set and have a .933 serve reception percentage. Jenilee ranks second at 2.49 with Becca Zlabis ranking third at 2.34. Jenilee leads the team in attack percentage at .407. Abron, at .323, ranks second with Schatzel third at .278. At setter, Natalie Emro has a 6.83 assists per set average for the Spartans. Allyson Karaba, with nine ace serves, leads the team in aces per set at .30. Emro ranks second at .28 (13) and Rathje is third at .16 (7). Defensively, Allyson Karaba has a team-high 4.10 digs per set average. Zlabis ranks second at 2.68 with Carli Weiler third at 2.26. Allyson Karaba leads the team in serve reception percentage at .975 handling 159 of 163 attempts. Weiler, at .961, ranks second (122 of 127) and Zlabis is third at .957 (359 of 375). At the net, Rathje has a team-high 1.09 blocks per set average with six solos and 43 assist blocks. Alexis Mathews, at 1.09, ranks second (4-33) with Emro third at .87 (4-36).
Michigan State is averaging 17.69 points, 13.96 kills and 13.19 assists per set while hitting .262. The Spartans average 1.11 aces, 13.00 digs and 2.63 blocks per set and have a .936 serve reception percentage. SERIES RECORD WITH MICHIGAN STATE
Ohio State holds a 40-27 lead in the series with Michigan State. The Buckeyes have a 21-8 record at home against the Spartans and are 17-15 in East Lansing. Michigan State is 4-2 in neutral site matches. DULL HAS DOUBLE-FIGURE KILLS-DIGS AT WISCONSIN
Katie Dull recorded her sixth double-double of the season at Wisconsin with 19 kills and 14 digs. Her 19 kills tied her season high set against Western Michigan. Dull added three assist blocks in the match. At Illinois, she posted four kills, four digs and two assist blocks. Dull has played in all 15 matches with 13 starts. She is averaging team highs of 4.15 points and 3.46 kills per set. She ranks second on the squad in digs per set at 2.06 and is averaging .23 aces and .79 blocks per set.
DULL NOW 11TH IN OHIO STATE CAREER KILLS WITH 1,330
Katie Dull, with 23 kills last weekend, now has 1,330 career kills and has moved to 11th on the Ohio State career kills list. She needs two kills to pass No. 10 Dana Stearns (1997-00) who has 1,331. Currently Dull is sixth in career kills per set at 3.63, 12th in career solo blocks with 53, 18th in career total blocks with 233 (53-180), 12th in career points with 1,548.0 and eighth in career points per game at 4.23.
SZERSZEN POSTS HER FOURTH DOUBLE-FIGURE KILL MATCH OF THE SEASON AT WISCONSIN
Anna Szerszen had 12 kills at Wisconsin for her fourth double-figure kill match of the season. She added a season-high nine digs against the Badgers. At Illinois, Szerszen had seven kills, two digs, one assist and one assist block. A starter in eight matches, she has played in all 15 this season. Szerszen is averaging 2.97 points, 2.37 kills, .25 aces, 1.06 digs and .59 blocks per set.
DANKS TIES HER CAREER HIGH OF SIX ASSIST BLOCKS AT WISCONSIN
Emily Danks, with six assist blocks at Wisconsin, tied her career high set earlier this season against Sacred Heart. She added seven kills, one ace serve and one dig against the Badgers. Danks had five kills, one ace serve, one dig and one assist block in the Illinois match. A starter in all 15 matches this season, she ranks second on the team in points per set at 3.26 and has a team-high .81 aces per set average recording a team-high 42. She is averaging .77 digs and .73 blocks per set.
BARHORST RETURNS TO THE LINEUP
Kelli Barhorst, after missing five matches, returned to the lineup at Wisconsin recording seven kills, one assist, one dig and two total blocks (1-1). She posted seven kills and three assist blocks in the Illinois match while hitting a match-high .545 (7-1-11). Barhorst has played and started in 10 matches this season and is averaging 2.95 points, 2.38 kills, .16 aces, .44 digs and .66 blocks per set.
SCHWARZWALDER POSTS A MATCH-HIGH SEVEN BLOCKS AT WISCONSIN
Allie Schwarzwalder recorded a match-high seven blocks at Wisconsin with a solo and six assist blocks. She added five kills and a dig against the Badgers. At Illinois, Schwarzwalder had six kills, one assist, one dig and one assist block. Playing in all 15 matches, she has started in 10. Schwarzwalder for the season is averaging a team-high 1.48 blocks per set. She is averaging 2.58 points, 1.60 kills, .14 aces and .57 digs per set.
BOOTH COMES OFF THE BENCH AT WISCONSIN WITH FIVE KILLS AND FIVE TOTAL BLOCKS.
Mariah Booth recorded five kills and five total blocks (1-4) off the bench at Wisconsin. She hit .625 in the match with five kills in eight attempts. At Illinois, Booth had three kills and one assist block. She has started in 10 matches this season and played in 14. Booth is averaging 2.10 points, 1.38 kills and ranks second on the team in blocks per set at 1.26.
HONE HAS A TEAM-HIGH NINE DIGS AT ILLINOIS
Betsy Hone recorded a team-high nine digs in the Illinois match for the Buckeyes. She added 25 assists, two kills and one assist block against the Illini. In the victory at Wisconsin, Hone posted 43 assists, two kills and one assist block. She has played in all 15 matches this season and started in 13 including the last three. Hone is averaging 9.72 assists, 1.39 points, 1.00 kills, 1.60 digs and .47 blocks per set.
MIGNIN RECORDS A TEAM-HIGH 16 DIGS AT WISCONSIN
Libero Sarah Mignin posted a team-high 16 digs in the 3-2 victory at Wisconsin. It was her eighth double-figure dig match of the season. She added two assists and two ace serves in the match and handled 36 of 40 serve receptions. At Illinois, Mignin had eight digs, three assists and one ace serve while handling 16 of 18 serve receptions. A starter at libero in all 15 matches, she is the team leader in digs per set with a 3.12 average. She ranks second on the squad with 16 ace serves averaging .31 per set. Mignin has a team-high .956 serve reception percentage handing 394 of 412 attempts.
HALVERSON HAS SIX DIGS IN EACH MATCH LAST WEEK
Susan Halverson recorded six digs and one assist in the matches last week at both Wisconsin and Illinois. She handled 20 serve receptions at Wisconsin without an error and 19 of 20 at Illinois. Halverson has played in all 15 matches this season and is averaging .90 digs per set. She ranks second on the squad in serve reception percentage at .954 handling 188 of 197 attempts.
DISALVATORE RECORDS A CAREER-HIGH EIGHT DIGS AT WISCONSIN
Davionna DiSalvatore posted a career-high eight digs at Wisconsin last week. Her previous best was six against Western Michigan and Presbyterian. She added two assists and handled 25 of 27 serve receptions in the match against the Badgers. At Illinois, DiSalvatore had two digs and handled 16 of 18 serve receptions. A starter in nine matches, she has played in all 15 and is averaging 1.17 digs per set. She has a .928 serve reception percentage handling 194 of 209 attempts.
OHIO STATE IN THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE ONLY STATISTICS
Ohio State has three players, in four categories, ranked in the Big Ten Conference only statistics. Allie Schwarzwalder ranks 10th in hitting percentage at .364 and is tied for seventh in blocks per set at 1.14. Betsy Hone ranks ninth in assists per set at 8.88 and Sarah Mignin is tied for third (six players) in aces per set at .38. In team statistics, OSU ranks fourth in blocks at 2.38 and is sixth in hitting percentage at .235. The Buckeyes are eighth in aces (.62) and 10th in kills (11.62), assists (10.62) and digs (12.12) per set.
OHIO STATE RECEIVING VOTES IN THE AVCA POLL
In the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 poll this week, Ohio State received 60 votes and is one spot out of the Top 25. Four Big Ten squads are ranked in the Top 25 with Penn State fourth, Illinois seventh, Minnesota 17th, Michigan ranked 19th and Northwestern 25th. Ohio State and Purdue received votes.
MARIAH BOOTH NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 20, 2010
Mariah Booth was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the three matches of the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational. Returning to her hometown, the Kennesaw, Ga., native averaged a team-high 1.90 blocks per set for the three matches in helping the Buckeyes hold the three opponents to a combined .013 attack percentage and win the invitational.
Booth began the weekend with career highs of 11 assist blocks and nine kills in the 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) victory over Presbyterian. She hit .438 (9 kills, 2 errors) 16 attempts) in the match. In the 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-10) win over Coastal Carolina, Booth recorded eight kills and five assist blocks while hitting .375 (8-2-16). She closed out the weekend with four kills, one dig and three total blocks (1-2) while hitting .429 (4-1-7) against Kennesaw State.
Booth was named to the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational All-Tournament Team after averaging 1.90 blocks, 2.10 kills and 3.10 points per set for the weekend.
A starter in 10 of the 12 matches she has played, Booth is averaging 1.31 blocks, 1.39 kills and 2.12 points per set for the season.
ALLIE SCHWARZWALDER NAMED BIG TEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Sept. 13, 2010
Allie Schwarzwalder was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the four Buckeye victories at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament. She was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.08 blocks per set in the tournament.
Schwarzwalder had eight kills, four assist blocks and one dig in the 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-18) win over Brown. She had five kills, four digs and four assist blocks in the 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-19) victory at UMBC. Schwarzwalder produced her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 total blocks in the 3-1 (27-29, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18) win over Sacred Heart. She added thee digs and an ace serve in the match and her 10 total blocks and nine assist blocks were career highs. In the final match of the tournament, a 3-0 (25-13, 30-28, 25-14) win over Towson, Schwarzwalder had five kills, a career-high four ace serves, one dig and nine total blocks with a solo and eight assists.
For the weekend, Schwarzwalder averaged 3.65 points, 2.08 blocks, 2.15 kills, .38 aces and .69 digs per set.
BUCKEYES HAVE THREE BIG TEN NETWORK APPEARANCES
The Big Ten Network will have three Ohio State matches shown live this season. Buckeye home matches against Minnesota (Oct. 16, 6 p.m.) and Penn State (Oct 20, 7 p.m.) and OSU’s road match at Michigan (Nov. 6, 6 p.m.) are part of the conference broadcast schedule.
BIG TEN COACHES PICK OHIO STATE TO FINISH FOURTH
By a vote of the Big Ten coaches, Ohio State has been picked to finish fourth in the 2010 season. The Buckeyes finished tied for fourth last season. Six-time defending champion Penn State was picked to finish first, Illinois season and Minnesota third. Rounding out the top six is Michigan fifth and Michigan State sixth.
KATIE DULL IS NAMED TO THE 2010 PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN TEAM
Senior outside hitter Katie Dull was a unanimous selection to the 2010 preseason All-Big Ten team by a vote of the Big Ten coaches. Joining Dull on the team is Johannah Bangert, Michelle Bartsch, Laura DeBruler and Hillary Haen of Illinois; Ashley Benson of Indiana; Alex Hunt and Lexi Zimmerman of Michigan; Kyndra Abron of Michigan State; Lauren Gibbemeyer, Tabitha Love and Hailey Cowles of Minnesota; Sabel Moffett of Northwestern and Blair Brown, Alyssa D’Errico and Arielle Wilson of Penn State.
HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his third season at Ohio State. He directed the Buckeyes to a fourth place tie (12-8) in the Big Ten in 2009 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship finishing with a 25-10 overall record.
Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five.
Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.
He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 243-96.
