Buckeyes Score Two Late in 2-0 Win Over Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Junior forward Paige Maxwell scored the game-winner in the 85th minute and freshman midfielder Kristen Niederhaus added an insurance tally two minutes later as the Ohio State women’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over rival Michigan Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor.
After the Buckeyes stole the ball deep in Michigan territory, Niederhaus played a beautiful through ball to Maxwell in the right side of the box and the junior beat Michigan goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer for the game-winner.
“Winning on the road in conference is always tough so it’s a great accomplishment to start off with a win,” head coach Lori Walker said. “We played a complete game and each line played very well. We were able to bring more fresh legs on and play at a high level for 90 minutes.”
Less than two minutes later, Niederhaus scored an insurance tally, the second goal of her career, off a beautiful cross from sophomore Tiffany Cameron.
The Buckeyes outshot Michigan 8-0 over the first 19 minutes, including three by Maxwellbut were unable to find the back of the net as the game was scoreless heading into the break.
Ohio State put a pair of shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the second half, one a header by Cassie Dickerson and the other a shot by Kendyl Reed, but Kopmeyer made the save on both.
The Buckeyes almost took the lead in the 68th minute when a header by Maxwell beat Kopmeyer but deflected off the crossbar. Maxwell took a shot off the rebound but it sailed just wide.
For the game, Ohio State held a 17-6 advantage in shots, including 8-3 on goal.
The Buckeyes (7-2-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten )will be back in action when they take on Penn State in their Big Ten home opener at 3 p.m. Oct. 3 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
