Athletics Good Stuff – Ohio State Buckeyes

Athletes of the Week
• Quarterback Terrelle Pryor completed 22-of-29 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns, plus he rushed for 35 yards and another touchdown, while improving his record to 22-3 as a starting quarterback in a 43-7 victory over Ohio. He completed a school-record 16-consecutive passes at one point in the first half, breaking the single-game record of 12 set by Jim Karsatos in 1985 against Wisconsin. Pryor also threw his first interception of the season late in the first half.
• Named to the Kennesaw State All-Tournament Team, Katie Dull averaged 4.40 points, 3.50 kills, 2.00 digs and 1.20 blocks per set in leading OSU to the tournament championship. She hit a career-high .667 against Presbyterian with 10 kills in 15 attempts adding two block assists, one dig and one assist. Against Coastal Carolina, Dull equaled her career-high of 18 digs adding 13 kills, five assist blocks and an ace serve. Against Kennesaw State, she recorded 12 kills, one ace serve, one dig and five total blocks with two solos and three assist blocks. For the season, Dull is leading OSU in points (4.33) and kills (3.57) and ranks second in digs (2.02) per game.
Athletics
• With the kickoff of the 2010 football season, the Scarlet, Gray and Green sustainability program started its fourth year at Ohio State. A partnership between the Department of Athletics and Facilities Operations and Development’s Energy Services and Sustainability, SG&G’s goal is to make Ohio State sporting events more environmentally friendly.
• Two games into the 2010 football season, OSU has recycled 48 percent of the trash from Ohio Stadium and the tailgate lots on campus. That figure is an increase of 32 percent after two games into the 2009 season. Through the Marshall and Miami home dates, Scarlet, Gray and Green has collected nearly 30 tons of recyclable materials inside Ohio Stadium and in the tailgate lots.
Men’s Cross Country
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Ohio State placed five runners in the Top 10 en route to a first-place finish at the 6.4k Appalachian State Mountaineer Open Sept. 17. Led by senior Chad Balyo’s third-place finish, the Buckeyes totaled 29 points as a team to easily outdistance Southern Illinois and Queens (second-place tie, 57 points).
Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Karen Dennis
• Fresh off its grueling training regimen in the hills of North Carolina, Ohio State opened the season in dominating fashion Sept. 17 at the Mountaineer Open. The 5K event took place in the State Farm Fields of Boone, N.C.
• The Buckeyes swept the top 4 spots, led by senior Ellen Birmingham’s first-place time of 17:53.93. She was followed by freshman Meredith Wagner (18:00.36) in second, senior Sarah Foster (18:04.21) in third and sophomore Molly Jacobson who finished fourth overall in a time of 18:15.33.
No. 10 Field Hockey (6-2)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• Ohio State defeated No. 9 Duke, 3-1, Sept. 18 in Durham, N.C. With the win, Ohio State has now defeated Duke in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. The Buckeyes were led by their upperclassmen with goals by juniors Aisling Coyle and Maria Briones and senior Jena Cacciatore. Senior Aisling McKeon also had two assists.
• Ohio State beat No. 7 Wake Forest, 3-2, in overtime Sept. 18 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Coyle scored twice, including the game-winner, to help the Buckeyes improve to 5-1 away from Columbus.
No. 2 Football (3-0)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Behind a record-setting performance by quarterback Terrelle Pryor, No. 2 Ohio State cruised to a 43-7 win over Mid-American Conference member Ohio Sept. 18 in an intra-state matchup at Ohio Stadium. • Ohio State cornerback Chimdi Chekwa has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for games of the weekend of Sept. 11.
Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• Ohio State had 12 of 15 rounds under par during the Marshall Invitational to set the team 54-hole scoring record at 820 (-32) and win the 41st edition of the tournament Sept. 14. The Buckeyes more than doubled the previous low of 15-under (set by Louisville in 2005) while defeating runner-up Xavier by seven shots.
• It is the first victory under second-year OSU coach Donnie Darr after three second-place finishes in 2009-10. Sophomore Jamie Sindelar tied for second at 11-under, with Brad Smith and Alex Redfield also in the top 10 with a tie for seventh (-6).
• Competing in its fifth round of tournament play in the last seven days, Ohio State concluded the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational in seventh place with a 54-hole total of 865 (+25) Sept. 19 in Olympia Fields, Ill. Senior Bo Hoag led the Buckeyes against a challenging field, tying for 11th at 3-over.
No. 21 Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
• Ohio State started the day in the lead by four strokes, but could not hold back Oregon who came from behind for the win and put the Buckeyes in second place by two strokes Sept. 18 at the 31st annual Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
• Sophomore Rachel Rohanna fired rounds of 69-73-70 for a total of 7-under 212 to finish runner-up by a stroke in the individual standings. She recorded two career bests during the tournament – lowest round and lowest 54-hole score.
Men’s Hockey
Head coach: Mark Osiecki
• Fifteen former Buckeyes were invited to NHL training camps, which began across North America Sept. 18. Three teams have two former Buckeyes at camp – Columbus (R.J. Umberger, Nate Guenin), Washington (Dave Steckel and Sean Collins) and New Jersey (Rod Pelley and Dave Caruso). Buckeyes also are at training camps for Phoenix (Mathieu Beaudoin), Boston (Matt Bartkowski), Montreal (Hunter Bishop), Carolina (Zac Dalpe), Los Angeles (Corey Elkins), Vancouver (Ryan Kesler), St. Louis (Tyson Strachan), Colorado (Tom Fritsche) and Chicago (Joe Palmer). Last year Umberger, Steckel, Pelley and Kesler all were everyday players for their respective teams. Guenin (with Pittsburgh), Elkins and Strachan also saw time at the NHL level during the 2009-10 campaign.
Women’s Hockey
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Natalie Spooner and Laura McIntosh, both junior assistant captains on the Ohio State women’s hockey team, are among the 36 forwards and 64 players overall invited to Canada’s National Women’s Team Evaluation Camp, Hockey Canada announced Sept. 17. Also attending will be former Buckeye defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (2004-08), who won gold with Team Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The evaluation camp will take place Sept. 22-26 at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena and Norma Bush Arena in Calgary.
Rifle
Head coach: Pat Cherry
• The Ohio State rifle team will have a Meet the Team luncheon at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 at The Fawcett Center on campus.
• The varsity rifle program is embarking on an ambitious goal that will include raising the financial support to install electronic targets and video equipment in the current facility. The hope is to have the technology available to have matches live on the internet and the Big Ten Network which will increase the program’s exposure and allow the program to attract the top student-athlete recruits with state-of-the-art facility and program.
No. 9 Men’s Soccer (4-2)
Head coach: John Bluem
• Ohio State absorbed its first loss of the season Sept. 16, falling to USF, 2-1, in the Embassy Suites Kick-off Classic hosted by Florida Golf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. Chris Hegngi scored the lone Buckeye goal midway through the first half.
• Despite several attempts down the stretch, Ohio State was edged by Florida Gulf Coast, 1-0, at the FGCU Embassy Suites Kick-off Classic Sept. 18 in front of a record crowd of 1,322.
• David Tiemstra was the second Ohio State men’s soccer player in a row to earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors, the conference announced Sept. 13.
• Leading scorer Konrad Warzycha received national praise Sept. 13 after helping lead the Buckeyes to a pair of wins last weekend. The senior midfielder was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com national team of the week and was featured in Soccer America’s College Soccer Reporter update under the headline “Warzycha on fire for Buckeyes.”
Women’s Soccer (6-2-1)
Head coach: Lori Walker
• Ohio State dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 19 Arizona State, giving up the lone goal with 10 seconds remaining before halftime Sept. 17 in Tucson, Ariz.
• Ohio State closed non-conference play with a 5-1 victory at Arizona Sept. 19 in Tucson, Ariz., with five different Buckeyes scoring goals.
• Junior forward Caitlyn Martin was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Sept. 13. Martin scored both Ohio State goals in a 2-0 win over Cleveland State last Wednesday.
Synchronized Swimming
Head coach: Linda Lichter-Witter
• The Ohio State synchronized swimming pair of Meghan Kinney and Michelle Theriault will compete in the duet at the 2010 FINA World Cup Sept. 16-19 at the Changshu Sports Center in Changshu, China.
• In addition to Kinney and Theriault, three other current and former Buckeyes also grace the U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Team roster. Leah Pinette, a letterwinner from 2005-08, Paige Ramsey, a 2010 All-American, and Lauren Robinson will also make the trip to China.
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• Five Buckeyes are ranked in the Campbell/ITA Division I Preseason Rankings, led by a No. 5 standing for junior All-American Chase Buchanan. Junior Devin McCarthy is No. 91, followed by classmate Steven Williams at No. 99. Senior Shuhei Uzawa is No. 101 and Balazs Novak is No. 104.
• In the doubles rankings, Buchanan and incoming freshman Blaz Rola are No. 19, while Novak and McCarthy are ranked 42nd. In the inaugural freshman/newcomer rankings, Rola, who hails from Slovenia, currently is tabbed the No. 2 freshman in the nation.
No. 25 Women’s Volleyball (12-1)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Ohio State competed in the Kennesaw State Owl Invitational Sept. 17-18 in Kennesaw, Ga. The Buckeyes began play with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-16, 25-20) over Presbyterian Sept. 17. Ohio State’s Marian Booth recorded a career-high 14.5 points with career-highs of nine kills (.438) and 11 assist blocks.
• With 16.5 points from Anna Szerszen and Katie Dull, the Buckeyes defeated Coastal Carolina, 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-10) in the second round of the Owls Invitational. Ohio State then won the tournament with a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-14, 25-18) over host Kennesaw State Sept. 18 in the KSU Convocation Center. Szerszen earned most valuable player honors at the Owl Invitational with Booth and Dull named to the all-tournament team
• Allie Schwarzwalder was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for her play in the four Buckeye victories at the Madison Bingaman Memorial Tournament last weekend. She was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 2.08 blocks per set in the tournament.
