Kinney, Theriault Finish Fifth in Duet at FINA World Cup – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming pair of Meghan Kinney and Michelle Theriault finished fifth (90.500) in the duet at the 2010 FINA World Cup Thursday-Sunday at the Changshu Sports Center in Changshu, China.
The U.S. National Team finished sixth overall, posting a final score of 91.700. Russia was named the FINA World Cup champion with a score of 98.150 followed by host-Federation, China (96.500). Canada took home a bronze medal (95.600) while Japan (93.600) and the Ukraine (92.400) followed.
In addition to Kinney and Theriault, three other current and former Buckeyes also grace the U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Team roster. Leah Pinette, a letterwinner from 2005-08, Paige Ramsey, a 2010 All-American, and Lauren Robinson also made the trip to China.
Kinney and Theriault are familiar with each other, having competed in the duet five times during the 2010 Buckeye season. Kinney, a native of Mission Viejo, Calif., and Theriault, who hails from North Hills, Calif., capped the season with a championship performance at the U.S. Collegiate Synchronized Swimming Championships in March, earning a 93.875 for the gold medal. That routine helped the Buckeyes win their 26th U.S. Collegiate title and the ninth under head coach Linda Lichter-Witter. Kinney and Theriault were named U.S. Collegiate All-Americans for their performance, along with four other Buckeyes, and their 93.875 served as a 2010 team best. Also during the season, Kinney, a 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Alternate, and Theriault won every duet competition they entered and averaged a 93.316.
The FINA World Cup featured the top competition in the world and was hosted by the Chinese Swimming Federation. It crown champions in the solo, duet, team and combination events.
The 2010 U.S. National Team is led by Jenny Ekhilevsky, who has coached on the international scene for 11 years and served as the 2008 Netherlands’ Olympic Coach, and Kimmy McKinley, a former member of the U.S. National Team. The team has been training in Santa Clara, Calif., since May.
