COLUMBUS, Ohio – Today (Sunday) is a big day in the lives of 103 current and former Ohio State student-athletes as The Ohio State University spring quarter commencement ceremonies will be held in Ohio Stadium. Among the graduates are multiple Big Ten champions and a handful of All-Americans.
Jeff See, a four-time All-American, solidified himself as one of the top distance runners in Ohio State history. The Middletown, Ohio, native claimed four outdoor All-America honors in the 1500-meter run and one indoor All-America honor in the mile run where he also was a two-time Big Ten champion in the event. He finished fifth at the NCAA championships in the 1500 over the weekend.
Kurt Coleman, a football co-captain and member of four-consecutive Big Ten champion teams, was a three-year starter at safety and took home Sporting News first team All-America honors and first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2009. He also was voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates and was a Lott Trophy finalist after finishing third on the team with 68 tackles and five interceptions.
On the soccer pitch, Doug Verhoff wrapped up his four-year career as one of the most successful players in recent history – both on and off the field. A team captain as a senior, Verhoff was the leader of the second winningest class in program history with 49 victories from 2006-09. In his senior season, Verhoff was tabbed the Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Year, as well as first team all-conference, en route to helping capture the both the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships.
Steven Moneke closed out his final year with the tennis Buckeyes with a trip to the NCAA Singles final in 2009. The championship final appearance is the furthest any Buckeye has advanced at the NCAA championships. Although Moneke finished as the runner-up, he ended his four-year Ohio State career as the program’s all-time singles winner with 146. He also tied the single-season wins record of 45.
John Klanac and Brian Kues were members of four-consecutive Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association championship teams. Klanac was named first-team All-MIVA in 2010 after being named to the second team in 2009 and was also named to the 2010 MIVA All-Tournament Team. Kues was a four-time member of the MIVA All-Academic team.
Wrestler Lance Palmer wrapped up his career as a four-time All-American. Palmer joins Tommy Rowlands (2001-04) as one of just two Buckeyes to collect four All-America laurels. The 2010 Big Ten Champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler at the conference championships finished his career with a 121-33 overall record, including a 57-9 mark in dual matches and a 25-4 ledger in the Big Ten. Reece Humphrey, a two-time All-American, concluded up his career at Ohio State as a four-time NCAA championship qualifier with a 117-33 overall record. The 2009 Big Ten and NCAA championships runner-up at 133 pounds, Humphrey also was the 2010 Big Ten runner-up (141).
Women’s basketball seniors Cherise Daniel, Maria Moeller and Andrea Walker were members of a record-setting Buckeye team that won its sixth-consecutive Big Ten regular season title in 2010. No team – men’s or women’s – has ever won six straight Big Ten regular season championships. The trio won 110 career games, more than any graduating class in Ohio State women’s basketball history.
Diver Chelsea Davis, a CoSIDA second team Academic All-American in 2010 and the winner of the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor given to the top female senior student-athlete at Ohio State, was an All-America selection in 2008 after capturing the three-meter title at the 2008 NCAA Championships. She also finished eighth on the one-meter at the national meet and was named Tri-Diver of the Year. In 2006, she earned All-America honorable mention status and won the three-meter event at the Big Ten Championships. The three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection also serves as an athlete representative for the USA Diving – Site Selection and Rules Committees.
Lindsay Quinitiliani, a four-year OSU Scholar-Athlete on the field hockey team, collected three Academic All-Big Ten honors while holding the team’s highest GPA all four seasons. A recipient of the program’s Buckeye Spirit Award in 2007, ’08 and ’09, Quintiliani backstopped the Buckeyes to a 12-5 record in 2009 with a 1.22 goals-against average and a .714 save percentage. She blanked five opponents to earn first-team All-Big Ten accolades as a senior while helping Ohio State to the NCAA tournament. She holds the Ohio State record for all-time wins with 40 and is second in shutouts with 14 with a career 1.59 GAA and 215 total saves.
Leah Ledford, Courtney Pruner and Rebecca Schultz were members of the second-winningest class on Ohio State softball history, picking up 159 wins including a Big Ten championship as freshmen in 2007. The trio also helped Ohio State to three NCAA Regional tournaments and its first Super Regional appearance in 2009. Pruner was a three-time All-Big Ten honoree and finished her career third on the Ohio State career list with 116 runs batted in and 38 home runs.
Three graduates were part of Ohio State’s degree completion program – Tyler Everett and Matt Finkes from football and Alexis McCall from the women’s track and field program. Finkes, a four-year football letterwinner from 1993-96, was a two-time first team All-Big Ten selection (1994, ’96). Everett, who has seen time in the NFL, played at Ohio State from 2002-06, winning a national title with the Buckeyes. McCall competed from 2001-03 and was an All-American in the indoor shot put.
