Athletes of the Week
• Setter Betsy Hone produced career-highs of 62 assists and 21 digs in the 3-2 upset victory of 13th-ranked Dayton in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Dayton. She added one kill, two ace serves and one assist block against the Flyers. Hone had 40 assists and 11 digs in the first round match against Lipscomb adding three kills, two ace serves and two blocks.
• Ohio State goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner was been named to the 2010 College Cup All-Tournament team, the NCAA announced Dec. 5. The junior from Reston, Va., made a career-best 10 saves in the Buckeyes’ 1-0 loss to eventual national champion Notre Dame in an NCAA semifinal in Cary, N.C. Baumgardner recorded shutouts in four of the Buckeyes last six matches.
Athletics
• Ohio State ranked fourth in the Big Ten with 82 student-athletes named to the 2010 Big Ten Fall Academic All-Conference team, the conference announced Dec. 2. Ohio State had academic honorees in all seven eligible fall sports.
No. 2 Men’s Basketball (6-0)
Head coach: Thad Matta
• In just his sixth collegiate game, Jared Sullinger had his third double-double of his blossoming career with 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Buckeyes to a 58-44 victory in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 30 at Florida State.
• Deshaun Thomas collected his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week award Nov. 29 after averaging 15.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in Ohio State’s wins over Morehead State and Miami (Ohio) last week.
No. 6 Women’s Basketball (7-0)
Head coach: Jim Foster
• Jantel Lavender had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Samantha Prahalis added 14 points and eight assists and Ohio State beat Virginia 74-46 Dec. 2 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
• Lavender scored 32 points and Prahalis had 15 points and a career-high 15 assists as the Buckeyes beat No. 11 Oklahoma 95-84 Dec. 5 in the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge.
• Lavender was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Week in recognition of her performance last week in wins over ETSU and UNC Wilmington. The honor is the 15th of Lavender’s career, two shy of the Big Ten record of 17.
No. 6 Football (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Ohio State will play Arkansas in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 8:30 p.m. (EST). ESPN will televise the game from the Louisiana Superdome. This is the 11th-consecutive season Ohio State will be playing in a bowl game – the longest streak in the Big Ten – and even more impressively, the game represents a national record ninth Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game and sixth consecutive for the Buckeyes.
• Dane Sanzenbacher was voted team Most Valuable Player as announced at the 2010 Football Appreciation Banquet Dec. 5 at the Ohio Union. He also received the Paul Warfield Award as the outstanding wide receiver and the Bo Rein Award as the most inspirational senior. Terrelle Pryor received the Archie Griffin Award as the outstanding offensive player, and Cameron Heyward received the Bill Willis Award as the outstanding defensive player.
• The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced its 10 finalists for this year’s award Nov. 29 with Pryor among the finalists.
• Ten Buckeyes, including seven seniors, were named first-team all-Big Ten Conference Nov. 29 by either a vote of the conference head coaches, a vote of the conference media or in five cases, both. First-team all-Big Ten Buckeyes as selected by both the coaches and the media were Heyward, Sanzenbacher, Brian Rolle, Chimdi Chekwa and Mike Adams. Those Buckeyes named first-team all-Big Ten by the coaches included Dan “Boom” Herron, Ross Homan and Jermale Hines. Additional first-team media choices were Justin Boren and Mike Brewster.
Men’s Hockey (6-8-1, 3-6-1-1 CCHA)
Head coach: Mark Osiecki
• Ohio State came from behind to down No. 11 Michigan in overtime, 3-2, Dec. 3 in Value City Arena. With the OSU net empty and the Buckeyes on the power play, senior Sergio Somma scored with just 10.4 seconds left to deadlock the score at 2-all. In overtime, freshman Alex Szczechura was the hero, netting his second OT goal of the season. Senior Peter Boyd assisted on both goals.
• Cal Heeter made 46 saves, but Michigan scored two third-period goals to win 2-1, Dec. 4 for the split. The Buckeyes led 1-0 after the second period on a Szczechura goal, with Boyd picking up his 100th career point on the assist, but the Wolverines tied the game at 6:02 of the third and had the go-ahead tally at 14:36.
No. 9 Women’s Hockey (8-6-2, 4-6-2-2 WCHA)
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Laura McIntosh, a junior forward, was selected WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Dec. 1. She factored into four of five OSU goals in the Buckeyes’ tie and win vs. Bemidji State.
• McIntosh and Natalie Spooner, both junior forwards and assistant captains, have been selected for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team that will compete at the 2011 MLP Cup, taking place Jan. 4-8 in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Hockey Canada officially released the 21-player roster Dec. 2.
Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• Andy Teitelbaum announced Nov. 30 that Ashley Bauer, Anne Hockenberry, Leah Miller and Carolyn Schneller have signed National Letters of Intent to row for the Buckeyes in 2012.
• Regarded as a “razor thin” vote for a place among the Top 5 finalists, the semifinalists and finalists’ selection for the Coach Wooden Citizen Cup were announced Dec. 1 and Erika Benford, a senior coxswain, was named a semifinalist. The Dublin, Ohio, native just came up short of being selected to the final group.
No. 17 Women’s Soccer (17-5-2, 8-2-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Lori Walker
• Ohio State concluded its season with a 1-0 heartbreaking loss to No. 7 Notre Dame in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament Dec. 3 in Cary, N.C. In the 83rd minute, Mandy Laddish slipped in behind the Buckeye defense and sent a left-footed strike from 20 yards out past the outstretched arm of a diving Katie Baumgardner.

• Midfielder Courtney Jenkins was honored with the 2010 Elite 88 Award at the NCAA College Cup banquet Dec. 2 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. The award is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 88 championships.
• Cassie Dickerson and Paige Maxwell were named 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-Americans, the NSCAA announced Dec. 3. Dickerson garnered first team honors, the first in program history, while Maxwell was named a third team All-American.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Wadley
• Ohio State’s 400 medley relay team won a national championship Dec. 2 at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships. The team of Andrew Elliott, Elliott Keefer, Quincy Lee and Tim Phillips raced to a first-place time of 3:10.07 in the closing event of the evening at the McCorkle Aquatic Center.
• Ohio State’s 800 free relay team, its medley relay teams and its contingent of individual medley swimmers were the stars of the night Dec. 3 for the host school at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships. The 800 freestyle relay team of Zach Holmes, Lincoln Fahrbach, Stephen Sakaris and Phillips took runner-up honors with a time of 6:27.81 for the highest finish of the night for the Scarlet and Gray.
• The Buckeyes finished in first place at the U.S. Short Course Nationals at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Dec. 4. The team defeated 11 other colleges with a score of 579.50 points.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Dorenkott
• Senior Samantha Cheverton swam in a U.S. Short Course National Championships final for the second consecutive day and three Ohio State relays had Top 10 finishes to highlight the second day of action at this national meet being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
• Ohio State closed out a fine three days of competition at the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships Dec. 4 with a final team finish of fifth in the meet that featured 15 collegiate teams.
• Senior butterflyer Anita Beck, junior freestyler Lisa Narum, sophomore backstroker Emily Creran, sophomore freestyler Megan Detro and Cheverton were named captains of the 2010-11season Nov. 30.
Women’s Volleyball (24-11, 10-10 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlston
• Ohio State advanced to the second round the NCAA Championship with a 3-1 win (25-22, 25-8, 22-25, 25-23) over Lipscomb Dec. 3 in the Frericks Center on the University of Dayton Campus. Katie Dull posted a team-high 16 points with 12 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and four assist blocks. Emily Danks added 15.5 points with 13 kills, one ace serve and three assist blocks.
• Ohio State then earned a spot in the Dayton regional semifinals with a 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 17-25, 24-26, 16-14) upset victory over host, 13th-ranked and No. 14 seed Dayton Dec. 4 in Dayton’s Frericks Center. The Buckeye victory moves OSU into the Dayton regional semifinals in the University of Dayton Arena, Dec. 10 against second-ranked and third-seeded Stanford (26-3).
• Dull, a senior outside hitter, was named to the 2010 All-Big Ten Team and junior middle blocker Kelli Barhorst was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection.
No. 19 Wrestling
Head coach: Tom Ryan
• Ohio State completed competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational Dec. 4 tied for 12th. Behind Top 7 showings by four Buckeyes, Ohio State compiled 63.5 points at the Las Vegas Convention Center to tie Arizona State.
