Athletics Good Stuff – Ohio State Buckeyes

Athletes of the Week
• Berta Queralt, a sophomore on the Ohio State field hockey team, helped lead the Buckeyes to two Big Ten victories against No. 7 Michigan state and No. 11 Penn State with six points on a goal and four assists. Against the Spartans, Queralt tallied a game-high five points with a goal and three assists. Queralt had the play of the day with her unassisted goal at 61:24. The native of Barcelona, Spain, Queralt scored off a loose ball on her knees in front of the cage. In the victory over the Nittany Lions, Queralt posted an assist on a penalty corner to help push the Ohio State lead to, 2-0. In the Buckeyes’ five game winning streak, Queralt has totaled 20 points. She is second on the team in points with 32 and first in assists with 18 this year.
• Kelli Barhorst played a key role in the 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-17) win over Iowa and the 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) upset of 19th-ranked Minnesota last week. She posted a career-high 14 kills against the Hawkeyes while hitting .619. Barhorst added a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. Against Minnesota, she posted a match-high 11 kills while hitting .429. Her five total blocks were a match high with two solos and three assists. In the two matches, Barhorst averaged 5.42 points, 4.17 kills and 2.00 blocks per set while hitting .524.
Baseball
Head coach: Greg Beals
• Through three games in the best-of-five series Scarlet leads Gray, 2-1, in the Scarlet & Gray World Series at Bill Davis Stadium. Scarlet opened with a 7-1 win in game one Oct. 13 behind five strong innings from starter Drew Rucinski and at least one hit from nine different players.
• Gray evened the series with an impressive outing by freshman starter Greg Greve, winning 2-0 Oct. 15, but Scarlet came back from a five-run deficit to defeat Gray 7-5 in the third game Oct. 16.
Fencing
Head coach: Vladimir Nazlymov
• Members of the Ohio State fencing team returned from action at the North American Cup (NAC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, Monday. The group finished with 13 Top 25 finishes, including six Top 10 and two bronze performances. Freshman Zain Shaito led the way for the men’s foil unit, collecting one of the two bronze finishes, tying Kurt Getz for third in the category. Classmate Katarzyna Dabrowa turned in the other medal-earning performance, tying Ashley Severson for third in women’s epee.
Men’s Cross Country
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Sophomore Donny Roys ran a personal record and top 40 time of 24.21.4 Oct. 16 at the 2010 Indiana State Pre-National Invitational, helping Ohio State to a 13th-place finish overall on the 8k course. Roys and the Buckeyes totaled 400 points for the top finish among schools from both the Big Ten and Great Lakes region.
Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Chris Neal
• Ohio State fought its way to a 14th-place finish Oct. 16 at the 2010 Indiana State Pre-National Invitational. Freshman Meredith Wagner led the way for the Buckeyes for the second-consecutive meet, finishing 45th in 21:08.9. As a team, the Buckeyes finished with 434 points on the 6k course.
No. 12 Men’s Golf
Head coach: Donnie Darr
• Ohio State had a tough final round of the inaugural Jack Nicklaus Invitational Oct. 12 to finish in eighth place with a total of 894 (+54) on the par 70, 7,140-yard Scioto Country Club in Columbus. The top performer for the Buckeyes was senior Michael Cress, who tied for 10th place at 8-over 218.
• The Buckeyes played host to a 10-team field filled with nationally-ranked squads, with No. 2 Oklahoma State taking the team title with a score of 864 (+24). The Cowboys finished six strokes ahead of a runner-up Illinois at 870, followed by Texas (871) and Arkansas (872). Luke Guthrie of the Fighting Illini claimed the individual title with a 5-under 205.
Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
• Ohio State had a rocky final round of 303 and slipped to third at the Lady Northern Invitational in Chicago Oct. 12. Combined with their previous rounds of 285-295, the Buckeyes totaled 883 (+19) on the par 72, 6,303-yard Lake Shore Country Club.
• Senior In Hong Lim, ranked 68th in the nation, led the Buckeyes with a tie for fourth to collect the fourth top-5 finish of her career. She also concluded the tournament with a career-low 54-hole score of 215 (-1).
No. 6 Field Hockey (11-3, 3-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• Ohio State downed No. 7 Michigan State, 5-1, Oct. 15 at Buckeye Varsity Field. The Buckeyes scored one goal in the first half and added four more in the final 35 minutes. Sophomore forward Berta Queralt tallied five points with a goal and three assists, and classmate Danica Deckard scored two goals.
• Behind two goals by junior co-captain Aisling Coyle, Ohio State then stretched its winning streak to five in a row with a 3-0 shutout against No. 11 Penn State Oct. 17 also at Buckeye Varsity Field.
No. 11 Football (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten)
Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Ohio State registered its first loss of the season, falling to then-No. 18 Wisconsin by a score of 31-18 Oct. 16 in Madison. Dan Herron scored both of the Buckeye touchdowns while rushing for 91 yards off 19 carries.
• For the second time in three weeks, junior quarterback Terrelle Pryor was honored by the Big Ten as co-offensive player of the week. He had a personal-best passing performance of 334 yards in the 38-10 win over Indiana.
Men’s Hockey (1-2-0, 0-0-0 CCHA)
Head coach: Mark Osiecki
• Ohio State was edged by Robert Morris, 4-3, Oct. 15 at Value City Arena in Mark Osiecki’s home head coaching debut. Scoring for the Buckeyes were Alex Lippincott, Sergio Somma and C.J. Severyn. Somma added an assist for a two-point night, along with two assists by Devin Krogh.
• Seniors John Albert, Peter Boyd and Somma and junior Sean Duddy were voted captains by their teammates, announced Oct. 15 before the Robert Morris game.
• Junior goalie Cal Heeter was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week announced Oct. 11. Heeter allowed just two goals, making 69 saves, in a road series split at Quinnipiac and posted his second career shutout Oct. 9.
No. 10 Women’s Hockey (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA)
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Ohio State opened its home and WCHA schedule with a 3-1 victory against St. Cloud State Oct. 15 at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus. Natalie Spooner and Shannon Reilly led the Buckeyes offensively with a goal and assist apiece.
• Laura McIntosh wrote her name in another category of the Ohio State record books Oct. 16, becoming just the fifth Buckeye in team history to have five points in a game as she scored a hat trick and added two assists in the Buckeyes’ 6-1 win over St. Cloud State at the OSU Ice Rink.
• Lisa Steffes was has been named WCHA Rookie of the Week, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Oct. 13. In her first collegiate games, she backstopped the Buckeyes to a sweep of Robert Morris, Oct. 8-9. Steffes stopped 40 of 42 shots faced in the series for a .952 save percentage.
Men’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Nick Myers
• Ohio State announced its captains for the 2011 season at the team’s annual banquet Oct. 10. Seniors Jarred Bowman, Conor David, Scott Lathrop and Bryce Woodson and junior Brock Sorensen were selected by a vote of their teammates.
Pistol
Head coach: James Sweeney
• Ohio State opened dual competition Oct. 16 by defeating the defending national champion, the U.S. Military Academy, 6,288 to 6,276. The Black Knights won two of the three open events, but a strong showing in free pistol (2,045 to 2,001) was enough to seal the victory. OSU’s only individual champion was freshman Aaron Tourigny in free pistol with a 519.
Rifle
Head coach: Patrick Cherry
• Ohio State lost a 4,676 to 4,570 decision at top-ranked West Virginia Oct. 16 to open its season. The Buckeyes were defeated 2,321 to 2,264 in smallbore rifle and 2,355 to 2,306 in air rifle.
• Amanda Furrer was OSU’s top shooter posting a 574 in smallbore rifle and a fifth-place 583 in air rifle. She finished fifth in the two-gun aggregate with a 1,157.
No. 16 Men’s Soccer (7-4-2, 2-1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: John Bluem
• Ohio State dropped a 1-0 decision to UIC Oct. 13 at Flames Field in Chicago.
• Konrad Warzycha scored the game-winner in the 97th minute as the Buckeyes outlasted Valparaiso, 1-0, in overtime Oct. 17 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. It was Ohio State’s sixth shutout of the year on four saves by Matt Lampson.
No. 24 Women’s Soccer (12-2-1, 6-0-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Lori Walker
• Ohio State earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wisconsin, snapping the Badgers’ 930-minute shutout streak in the process, Oct. 15 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Caitlyn Martin scored for the Buckeyes in the 28th minute.
• Lauren Granberg scored 43 seconds into overtime to lift the Buckeyes over No. 15 Minnesota, 2-1, Oct. 17 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
• Paige Maxwell was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks announced Oct. 11. The junior scored a pair of goals, including the gamewinner, in the Buckeyes’ 3-1 victory at Iowa. She then came back and scored another game-winner in the 99th minute of a 1-0 overtime win at Northwestern.
Women’s Volleyball (16-5, 4-4 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Behind a match-high 18.0 points from Kelli Barhorst, Ohio State defeated Iowa, 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-17) Oct. 15 in St. John Arena. Barhorst posted a match-high 14 kills (.619), a solo block and six assist blocks with Emily Danks adding 13. 5 points with nine kills (.467), three ace serves and three assist blocks.
• Ohio State then upset 19th-ranked Minnesota, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-17) Oct. 16 in St. John Arena. Barhorst had a match-high 14.5 points and 11 kills (.429), two solo blocks and three assist blocks against the Golden Gophers.
