Quinton Pierre-Wash, a 2006 graduate of North Texas University, is a first-year addition to the Ohio State Athletics staff, beginning in January 2010. Quinton works in the Creative Services Department as a graphic designer and is responsible for print work for seven sports. Quinton plans and facilitates the design process all the way up to print. He also assists with interactive media guides that the football team introduced in 2010.
1. How did you start working at Ohio State?
Simply put, I knew somebody that knew somebody. I was a part of an internship in Dallas called the Marcus Graham Project. The founder of the project was contacted through someone I know named Taurean Jones and from there, he laid out the position and the founder felt that I was the only one qualified to do that type of work.
2. Growing up did you play any sports?
In high school, I played offensive tackle and guard on the football team.
3. What was the best part of playing sports in high school?
I liked performing as a team and as a unit. It measures success.
4. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to go to the gym, working out and hanging out with my friends.
5. What brought about your interest in graphic designing?
It started when I was a teenager. I was on a social media site called Black Planet and I noticed that everyone else had a better page layout than me. So, at that point I just wanted to create a page that was better than everyone else’s and so it just became competitive for me. I would take hours and hours of learning different design programs. From there, I just stuck with it and it turned from a hobby into a job.
6. When designing something do you use any type of creative inspiration?
I like to pull ideas from a lot of different areas. If I’m doing Web work I go to different Web sites and if I’m doing print work I like to look at different publications. From there, I try to eliminate the weaknesses from those and emphasize the strengths while adding my own style. So basically, I like to go to something inspirational and think about what I would have done differently.
7. What is your favorite type of program or technique to use while designing?
My favorite program to use is Photoshop. It allows me to be very flexible and creative with my designs. My favorite technique to use is High Definition Resolution imagery. It enhances the photo to look unrealistic but colorful and vibrant at the same time.
8. What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is being able to work with one brand or identity (Ohio State). It’s a lot different than working at an agency where I might have several brands to work for.
