Student-Athletes of the Week
• Doug Verhoff was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic after leading the men’s soccer team to the tourney championship Sept. 6. The senior captain anchored the Buckeye defense that gave up just one goal on the weekend and allowed a combined nine shots on goal.
• Senior goalkeeper Lauren Robertson was named Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 7 following the women’s soccer team’s two shutout weekend. The Mission Viejo, Calif. Native collected her third shutout of the 2009 campaign in the Buckeyes’ 3-0 win over No. 14 San Diego Sept. 4 and followed that up by blanking Southern Cal, 1-0, Sept. 6. It was a happy homecoming for Robertson, who is second all-time in OSU history with 21 career shutouts. With two more, she will become the Buckeyes’ all-time leader. After the pair of solid efforts this weekend, the senior has now lowered her 2009 goals against average to 0.38.
Athletics Good Stuff
Athletics
• Ohio State student-athletes combined to serve the Columbus community with 6,496 hours of community service at 117 local organizations, schools and events during the 2008-09 season. Leading the way was the cheerleading team with an outstanding 1,671 hours, followed by the football team with 799 hours and the men’s track and field team in third with 728.
• Tickets are available for the Ohio State Men’s Varsity O Alumni Association and the Women’s Varsity O Alumnae Society annual dinner and induction ceremonies held Sept.25 to honor the 2009 Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame class. At both dinners there will be a meet and greet with student-athletes from sports represented by the induction class. Guests will have an opportunity to meet Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame inductees and current student-athletes. • Pat Chun, a member of the Ohio State department of athletics staff since 1997, was elevated to senior associate athletics director for external relations, and Bill Jones and Diana Sabau were promoted to associate athletics directors for external relations, late this summer.
Baseball
Head coach: Bob Todd
• Pitchers Alex Wimmers and Drew Rucinski both were named the third-best player in their respective summer leagues by Baseball America. Wimmers went 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in six games for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League. Rucinski went 3-1 with a 3.22 ERA in 12 games for Luray of the Valley Baseball League.
Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Karen Dennis
• Ashley Chirco finished seventh in a time of 18:36, leading Ohio State to a season-opening third-place finish at the Dayton 5k Challenge Sept. 5. The Buckeyes finished with a total of 72 points as Miami (Ohio) won the team competition with 29, followed by Dayton in second with 32. IUPUI took fourth with 108 points.

No. 18 Field Hockey (1-3)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson
• Ohio State held a one-goal lead twice vs. No. 3 Syracuse, who returned six starters from its 2008 NCAA Final Four team, but fell in overtime, 3-2 Sept. 4. Jena Cacciatore scored at 3:13 to give the Buckeyes the initial lead and Aisling Coyle scored just before halftime to make it 2-1 but the Orange were able to tie the game in the second half and notched the gamewinner in the fourth minute of overtime.
• The Buckeyes fell, 5-4, vs. Princeton Sept. 5 in its second-consecutive overtime game. Maria Briones led the team with two goals while Cacciatore and Coyle add a tally each.
• Berta Queralt was named Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week Aug. 31 after recording seven points on two goals and three assists in Ohio State’s 7-0 victory over Saint Louis Aug. 30.
• Saskia Mueller, an Ohio State letterwinner from 2003-06, and Linda Haussener, who finished her four-year Buckeye career in 2008, helped Switzerland to the 2009 EuroHockey Nations Challenge title last August in Olten, Switzerland. Mueller, who tallied three goals for the squad, was named the Most Valuable Player for her performance.

• Ohio State hosted the U.S. Naval Academy for the first time in 78 years to open the 2009 season, with the Buckeyes coming out of the hard-fought game with a 31-27 win before an opening game record crowd of 105,092 in Ohio Stadium.

Men’s Hockey

• R.J. Umberger, an All-American hockey player for the Buckeyes and current member of the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets, road 100 miles as a participant in the inaugural Pelotonia, a grass roots bike tour to end cancer, the last weekend of August.
• Joseph Palmer has signed a one-year American Hockey League contract with the Rockford IceHogs and will forego his senior year of eligibility with the Buckeyes. Palmer, a goaltender from Yorkville, N.Y., was a fourth-round draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Women’s Hockey
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Four Buckeyes on the top international teams in women’s hockey gathered in Vancouver, British Columbia, to compete for the 2009 Hockey Canada Cup, Aug. 31-Sept. 6. Three of the Buckeyes were former Ohio State defensemen – Tessa Bonhomme on Team Canada, Lisa Chesson on Team USA and Emma Laaksonen on Team Finland. Incoming freshman forward Minttu Tuominen also was on Team Finland. The United States topped Canada, 2-1, in the championship game while Finland edged Sweden, 1-0, for the bronze medal with Laaksonen assisting on the lone goal.
Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• Margot Shumway, an Ohio State letterwinner in 2001 and 2002, concluded action at the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland, Aug. 28 with a C Final victory in the women’s single sculls (W1x). Overall, the Westlake, Ohio, native finished 13th at the event.
Men’s Soccer (1-0-1)

• Redshirt freshman Eric Shrigley scored with 18 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Ohio State a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton Sept. 6 in the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The win gave the Buckeyes the tournament championship and Buckeye Doug Verhoff named tournament MVP.
• Austin McAnena scored his first collegiate goal as Ohio State played Gonzaga to a 1-1 tie through 110 minutes Sept. 4.

• Ohio State knocked off No. 14 San Diego, 3-0, Sept. 4 in the Buckeyes’ first match of the USD Nike Classic. Taylor Moront put the Buckeyes on the board in the 40th minute, freshman Tiffany Cameron knocked in the second goal and Genna Brand end the scoring with a tally in the 74th minute.
• Ohio State edged Southern California, 1-0, on a penalty kick goal by junior Cassie Dickerson in the Buckeye’s final match of the USD Nike Classic Sept. 6 in San Diego.

• In his first career Grand Slam showing, Chase Buchanan, an Ohio State sophomore, lost 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 to No. 7-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Sept. 1 in the first round of the singles main draw of the 2009 U.S. Open.
Women’s Volleyball (6-1)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• Ohio State opened the 18th Annual Hilton Classic with a 3-2 (25-17, 16-25, 17-25, 25-17, 15-10) loss to host Colorado State in Ft. Collins, Colo. Kristen Dozier scored a team-high 15.5 points with 14 kills, one ace serve and one assist block vs. CSU.
• The Buckeyes bounced back and downed Georgia Southern, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17) Sept. 5. Katie Dull posted a match-high 21.5 points for the Buckeyes with a match-high 12 kills (.400).
• Ohio State closed out play at the Colorado State Hilton Classic with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-17) victory over Texas Arlington. Dull posted a match-high 17 points in the contest.
