The baseball team swept a Big Ten Conference series over Michigan for the first time in Bill Davis Stadium and the first time in 15 years with a doubleheader sweep April 29 after the Game 1 win April 30.
Friday April 29
Men’s tennis freshman Blaz Rola became Ohio State’s fourth newcomer to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year laurels. Rola joins 2004 honoree Joey Atas, as well as 2006 and 2007 recipients Bryan Koniecko and Justin Kronauge. Tuesday April 26
The men’s volleyball team has won the last three MIVA Tournaments and has 13 overall, which is second-most in the conference. The No. 1-seed Buckeyes will face fourth-seed Lewis at 7 p.m. Wednesday in St. John Arena in a semifinal match of the MIVA tournament.

Not only did the men’s tennis team win its sixth-consecutive Big Ten regular-season title Sunday April 24, the Buckeyes also went 10-0 in the conference for the sixth-straight year.

The field hockey team announced its schedule Thursday and will face a tough slate during the 2011 season as six of its opponents were 2010 NCAA contenders.

In his last competition in the Scarlet and Gray, men’s gymnastics Brandon Wynn accomplished a feat just one other gymnast in Ohio State history had done before – win back-to-back national championships on rings. He won his second career NCAA title with a 16.000 – .600 points better than the rest of the field, joining current interim co-head coach and former U.S. Olympian Blaine Wilson as the only two Buckeye gymnasts to do so.

Baseball’s Brian DeLucia had one triple in each of his three previous seasons, for three total triples. After leading off the game vs. Michigan State April 17 with a triple, he has three in his last five games.

Jesse Owens 75th Anniversary Celebration, April 21-24
The Ohio State University is proud to lead the celebration of Jesse Owens’ legacy on the 75th anniversary of his stellar performance in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Germany.

Former wrestling Buckeye Reece Humphrey (2006-10) won his first U.S. Open title April 10 in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 132-pound bracket.

The baseball team is 236-116 all-time at Bill Davis Stadium for a fine .670 winning percentage. Ohio State 136-76 vs. the Big Ten Conference.

Brittney Zerhusen of the women’s lacrosse team tied her career high in points with 10 Sunday en route to helping the Buckeyes upset No. 14 Vanderbilt, 17-16, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The women’s tennis team is 8-1 on the season when it wins the doubles point.
Thursday April 7
The rowing team’s Second Varsity Four has won both its races by an average time of 17.8 seconds. A large part of that average has to do with the 28.9-second win over Clemson in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge April 3.
Wednesday March 30
The baseball team opened its 2011 home schedule with a 4-1 win over Xavier March 29 at Bill Davis Stadium. Ohio State is 12-3 all-time in home openers and has won its last seven home openers dating back to 2005.

In a battle of conference bragging rights, the women’s track and field team represented the Big Ten well when it contributed a league-high 123 points to help the Big Ten defeat the Southeastern Conference, 379-349, at the SEC/Big Ten Challenge March 26 at Mississippi State University.

With a 7-0 win at Illinois Sunday March 27, the men’s tennis team won their 69th-consecutive Big Ten match.
Wednesday March 23
Senior co-captain Brandon Wynn of the men’s gymnastics team has won 17-consecutive rings events and has not lost on the event since September of 2009. The 2010 NCAA and Big Ten champion has won 23 rings titles in his Buckeye career.
Monday March 21
Senior Jantel Lavender has scored in double figures in all 134 career games, an NCAA record for most consecutive double-figure scoring games and tied for the most overall with Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) who did it in 137 games overall.
Thursday March 17
The softball team has made four NCAA appearances in the last five years, including its first run in program history to the NCAA Super Regional in 2009. Ohio State also made the tournament in 2006 and 2007.

Members of the women’s swimming team have broken 13 school records this season (out of 19 events), including all five relays. Most impressive was the 800 free relay carving nearly seven seconds off the old mark and the 400 free relay knocking over four seconds off the old mark.

Head coach Linda Lichter-Witter has coached 115 Collegiate All-Americans, including current Buckeyes Paige Ramsey, Deborah Shim and Michelle Theriault.

Hurdler Letecia Wright collected her first All-America honor Saturday when she finished fifth overall at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60m hurdles.

When Cami Hubbs, a member of the women’s tennis team, competes at Nebraska March 11 at the Nebraska Tennis Center, she will be returning to her roots. Hubbs hails from Omaha, just about 50 miles from the Nebraska-Lincoln campus.
Hubbs isn’t the only Buckeye with connections to Nebraska. Ohio State assistant coach Sadhaf Fath spent a year as an assistant coach with the Cornhuskers during the 2004 season.

Natalie Spooner of the women’s hockey team is second on the Ohio State all-time career goals list with 69 to her credit in three seasons. The Buckeye forward, who tallied a season-high 39 points, had eight multiple-goal performances and posted two or more points 14 times in 29 games played. Her 10 power play goals ties for third in the NCAA and her 1.34 points per game ranks 22nd. Spooner was later named to the All-WCHA second team.

The men’s lacrosse team is in the Top 10 nationally in four categories – man-down defense, scoring defense, scoring margin and winning percentage.
Monday March 7
The men’s basketball team shot 93.3 percent from 3-point range vs. Wisconsin March 6, which set an NCAA Division I record. The previous high percentage was 91.7 percent, set by Drexel vs. Delaware (11-12) on 12/3/00. The 14-consecutive made 3-point field goals also set an NCAA Division I record. The previous record of consecutive made 3-point field goals was 11 set by Niagara vs. Siena (1/7/87) and Eastern Kentucky vs. UNC-Asheville (1/14/87).
Thursday March 3
Current wrestling assistant coach J Jaggers, a Buckeye letterwinner from 2006-09 and two-time NCAA champion at 141 pounds in 2008 and 2009, recorded the second-fastest fall all-time at the Big Ten championships. Jaggers pinned Purdue’s Nick Bertucci in 25 seconds in the second-round consolation match in 2007.

The women’s track and field team won its first Big Ten title Sunday Feb. 27 in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes compiled 122.50 points to beat three-time defending champion Penn State by 36.50 points. Following the championships, head coach Karen Dennis was named conference coach of the year and junior All-American Christina Manning was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Athlete of the Championships.

The men’s volleyball team currently is on a 12-match win streak and a 14-match win streak at home. The Buckeyes recently beat Juniata, 3-0, Feb. 27 in St. John Arena.
Thursday Feb. 24
The women’s tennis team has won its last three matches by a combined score of 17-4, including a 7-0 whitewash of then-No. 65 William & Mary. Midseason streaks are nothing new to the Scarlet and Gray. In 2007, the Buckeyes reeled off a 9-1 record from Feb. 25 to April 1, followed by a 12-1 run from Feb. 16 to March 30 in 2008. Two seasons ago, Ohio State went 8-1 from Feb. 21 to March 29. The team was 6-1 between Feb. 28 and April 2 last year.
Wednesday Feb. 23
Freshman closer/designated hitter Josh Dezse was named the Big Ten Conference’s first-ever baseball Freshman of the Week Feb. 21 for his efforts during the Big East/Big Ten Challenge. Dezse led the team in batting (.583; 7 for 12) and he also made two relief appearances, including working 2.0 scoreless innings and picking up the win over St. John’s.

With Sarah Miller’s sixth Big Ten Freshman of the Week laurel Feb. 21, the women’s gymnastics team now owns the most conference weekly honors among its counterparts. Monday Feb. 21
First-year head coaches Greg Beals of the baseball team and Alexis Venechanos of the women’s lacrosse team earned their first wins of their Ohio State careers Feb. 20. The baseball Buckeyes defeated St. John’s, 8-7, in extra innings in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in St. Petersburg, Fla. The women’s lacrosse team downed American, 16-4, at Jacobs Field in Washington, D.C.

With 11 assists against Penn State Feb. 17, Samantha Prahalis broke Jamie Lewis’ school record of 643 career assists. Prahalis now has 647 assists for her career.

Six former baseball players opened their seasons at Major League spring training camps this past week. Matt Angle, Doug Deeds, Eric Fryer, Cory Luebke, J.B. Shuck and Nick Swisher each started their 2011 campaigns in big-league camps from Kissimmee, Fla., to Surprise, Ariz.

David Lighty of the men’s basketball team has played in 146 games as a Buckeye, the most all-time in an Ohio State uniform. Lighty also leads all NCAA active players in games played (Duke’s Kyle Singler is second with 133).
Tuesday Feb. 15
The men’s lacrosse team and head coach Nick Myers will welcome back former Buckeye head coach Joe Breschi when he and the No. 3 Tar Heels play the Buckeyes at Ohio Stadium at noon Feb. 19. It will be the first of two games the lacrosse team will play at the ‘Shoe. The Buckeyes will play Fairfield at 11 a.m. April 23 in the “Showdown in the Shoe.” The Fairfield game will precede the annual spring football scrimmage.

History was made Feb. 13 inside The Barn in Minneapolis as women’s basketball’s Jantel Lavender became Ohio State’s all-time scoring leader.
Lavender led all scorers with 29 points to lead the Buckeyes to an 83-76 win over Minnesota at Williams Arena and break Katie Smith’s record of 2,578 points set back in 1996.
Lavender now owns the record all to herself with 2,587 points. She set the mark with her layup at the 16:28 mark of the second half that put Ohio State up by one, 46-45.

Mik Berzins tied the men’s volleyball record for perfect hitting Feb. 10 when he recorded 13 kills in 13 attempts with no errors in the Buckeyes’ 3-0 sweep over Quincy. He shares the record with Layne Dreven, Colin McMillan and Gary Wrobel.
Thursday Feb. 10
The women’s tennis team rallied to beat Kentucky, 4-3, Feb. 9 and by doing so earned consecutive wins against the Wildcats since notching a 4-0 record against Kentucky from 1975-82.

Men’s tennis senior captains Matt Allare, Balazs Novak and Shuhei Uzawa entered the 2011 spring campaign with a combined 40-4 Big Ten record.

Samantha Prahalis of the women’s basketball team recorded her first career triple-double with 13 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds against Northwestern Feb. 6.
Monday Feb. 7
Katie Bell, a senior on the Ohio State women’s diving team, won her second U.S. national championship Feb. 6 when she was crowned the 10-meter synchronized diving champion in Iowa City, Iowa. Bell also won the silver medal on the 10-meter platform the day before and was the gold medalist in the synchronized event in 2009.

The men’s basketball team’s 23-0 overall record is the second-best start in school history (1960-61, 27-0). Ohio State currently holds the nation’s longest active winning streak at 23. They are the only remaining unbeaten team in the country. They also have the longest active regular season win streak dating back to last season with 26 wins in a row.

With six assists against St. Cloud State last weekend, junior forward Laura McIntosh became Ohio State’s all-time career assists leader with 94, passing former Buckeye Jana Harrigan (2003-06) who totaled 92 assists in her four-year career.
Wednesday Feb. 2
The men’s hockey team will hold the inaugural Teddy Bear Toss at the game against Michigan State at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. Buckeye fans are encouraged to bring new teddy bears wrapped in plastic bags to the game. When the Buckeyes score their first goal, fans will throw the bears on the ice. Bears will also be available to purchase on the concourse before the game. They will be collected and brought by the Buckeye hockey players to Ronald McDonald House for Valentine’s Day.

The men’s basketball team has earned all 12 Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors this season after Jared Sullinger was named FOW Monday. Deshaun Thomas and Aaron Craft have also won one each. Sullinger also has four conference player of the week accolades.

The women’s swimming and diving team, under the direction of third-year coach Bill Dorenkott, won a school-record 11 duals during the 2010-11 campaign.

When the wrestling team takes on Michigan at 7 p.m. Friday Jan. 28 in St. John Arena, it will mark the 80th edition of the Buckeyes vs. Wolverines on the mats.

Ashley Adams, a freshman on the women’s basketball team, scored a career-best 16 points vs. Iowa Jan. 24 to cap the weekend shooting 80 percent (12-of-15) against the Hawkeyes and Illini. She was rewarded with Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors for her efforts.

The 2011 season marks the 100th year of men’s tennis at Ohio State. The tennis program started in 1912 and is the second oldest sport at Ohio State behind baseball. After 99 years, the men’s tennis program has an overall record of 988-692-10 for a .585 winning percentage.
Monday Jan. 24
The pistol team remains undefeated (6-0) in open competition this season following a 6,292 to 6,264 victory at The Citadel this past weekend. The Buckeyes won the open free pistol, 2,012 to 1,969. The Bulldogs won the standard pistol event, 2,128 to 2,096 to cut the Ohio State lead to 11 points. OSU sealed the victory with a 2,184 to 2,167 win in air pistol.

The women’s tennis team is 11-2 in season openers under head coach Chuck Merzbacher. The Buckeyes also hold a 13-1 opening-day doubleheader ledger under Merzbacher. Last season the Buckeyes swept Xavier and Cleveland State in their opening-day double header by a combined score of 14-0. The Scarlet and Gray went on to win nine of their first 10 matches in 2010.

Big Ten Athlete of the Week and defending Big Ten 400m indoor champion Thomas Murdaugh ran a blazing time of 46.75 in the event at “The Dual” vs. Michigan Saturday Jan. 15. Murdaugh’s time is currently the top NCAA Division I time so far this season.

Matt Gold and Konrad Warzycha, seniors on the 2010 Ohio State men’s soccer team, were the 11th and 12th Buckeye players to enter the MLS ranks since the league’s inception in 1996 when they were selected in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Toronto FC and Sporting KC, respectively, from the site of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) convention Thursday in Baltimore, Md.

In this early women’s indoor track and field season, junior sprinter Madison McNary posted the second-fastest time in the country (24.05) in the 200-meter dash at the Buckeye Invitational Jan. 7 at French Field House.

With the sweep of the Miami RedHawks Jan. 7-8 at Value City Arena, the men’s hockey team clinched the Ohio Cup, the traveling trophy sponsored by Buckeye Sports Bulletin given to the team with the best record against its instate opponents. The Buckeyes also swept Bowling Green and Miami this season.

The men’s volleyball team, which earned a No. 7 ranking in the first AVCA Coaches Poll of the 2011 season, will face seven of the 15 ranked teams in the poll.

Jordan Jennewine of the women’s track and field team returns to the track in 2011 for the first time since 2009 after missing all of last season due to injury. She is the school record holder in the outdoor 1500m (4:23.37) and a member of the school record holding indoor DMR squad (11:32.71).

The football team played in its sixth consecutive BCS bowl game and its ninth overall – the most among FBS schools behind Oklahoma (8) – Tuesday night (Jan. 5) at the All-State Sugar Bowl.

Jantel Lavender’s 92.3 percent shooting performance Sunday vs. Bethune Cookman is tied for second all-time on the Ohio State single-game list. Lavender finished the game with 29 points.

The women’s hockey team defeated all three College Hockey America programs it faced this season – Robert Morris, Syracuse and Wayne State.

This is the 99th season of Big Ten membership in men’s basketball for the Buckeyes. Ohio State is 54-42 (.563) in conference openers, 64-30 (.681) in league home openers and 35-59 (.372) in the first road game of the season in Big Ten play. Ohio State has opened Big Ten play on the road 42 times and has an 18-24 record in those games.

Women’s hockey freshman goalie Lisa Steffes has made 30-plus saves in five of the last six games with a total of 215 saves in that span (35.8 average). She has made 30 or more saves 10 times already just 18 games into her young career. Steffes totals 559 saves this season to lead the NCAA and is on her way to becoming the first Buckeye goalie to make 1,000 saves in a season.

The men’s volleyball team, the 2011 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Preseason favorite, has won four consecutive regular season MIVA championships and the last three MIVA tournament championships.

The football team’s defense excelled at creating takeaways and eliminating explosive plays. In fact, the Buckeyes led the nation by allowing just 11 plays all season for 30+ yards. The 29 takeaways were 12th best in the country.

Former Ohio State football wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell became the first minority head coach in the 90-year history of the Kent State football program Monday.

Jon Diebler of the men’s basketball team matched an Ohio State record with nine 3-pointers, scoring a career-high 29 points and leading the second-ranked Buckeyes past Florida Gulf Coast 83-55 Wednesday night (Dec. 15).

Tim Phillips of the men’s swimming team is the first national youth team member to sign with Ohio State according to head coach Bill Wadley.

Football’s Devin Barclay, Bryant Browning, Chimdi Chekwa, Ross Homan, Chris Malone, Jake McQuaide, Grant Schwartz and Ryan Shuck received their degrees Sunday afternoon during commencement ceremonies at the Schottenstein Center. The group will conclude their Buckeye careers winning four Big Ten championships, going to four BCS bowl games and never losing to Michigan.

Freshman Jared Sullinger scored in double figures for the sixth time this season with a career-high 40 points and 13 rebounds. His 40 points is a Value City Arena record for most points scored. He has four double-doubles in seven career outings. The last Buckeye to score 30 points in a game was Evan Turner vs. Tennessee on March 26, 2010 in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen.

With the all-time series vs. Edinboro even at three all prior to 1998, the wrestling team has won four consecutive matches since then to take a 7-3 advantage in overall match-ups. The Buckeyes will look to make it five straight when they wrestle at Edinboro at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12.

Ohio State goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner was named to the 2010 College Cup All-Tournament team, the NCAA announced Dec. 5. The junior from Reston, Va., made a career-best 10 saves in the Buckeyes’ 1-0 loss to eventual national champion Notre Dame in an NCAA semifinal in Cary, N.C. Baumgardner recorded shutouts in four of the Buckeyes last six matches.

Samantha Prahalis became just the third Ohio State player to score at least 1,000 points and 500 assists after breaking the 1,000 point barrier at the 15:53 mark in the first half of the Buckeyes’ 95-84 win over No. 11 Oklahoma Sunday Dec. 5 in Value City Arena. Prahalis finished the evening with 15 points and 15 assists.

With its 3-2 win over No. 13 and 14th-seed Dayton Dec. 4, the women’s volleyball team snapped the Flyers’ 23-match win streak. The Buckeyes advanced to the regional championship match for the fourth time in program history after playing in the regional semifinals in 1991, 1994 and 2004.

After the 400 medley relay team of Andrew Elliott, Elliott Keefer, Quincy Lee and Tim Phillips captured the AT&T U.S. Short Course National Championships title, the Buckeyes have now won two consecutive national titles. During the summer, the 800 freestyle relay team of Lincoln Fahrbach, Stephen Sakaris, Zach Holmes and Phillips won a national title at the U.S. National Championships.

Men’s swimming head coach Bill Wadley, the 2010 Big Ten Coach of the Year, is in his 22nd year at Ohio State and he has an Ohio State dual meet record of 191-34. He has coached 15 Olympians and his teams have been ranked in the NCAA Top 25 for 18 of the past 21 seasons.

Former Buckeye gymnast Dick Huntwork (2000-03) will return to Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ assistant coach in 2011. Huntwork was instrumental in helping the Scarlet and Gray win its first NCAA title in 2001.

In honor of “Michigan Week,” the “Lose the Blue” campaign has returned. Since its inception in 2006 the “Lose the Blue” clothing drive, headed by the Ohio State Department of Athletics and the Ohio State University Trademark and Licensing Services Department, has collected more than 18,000 pounds of clothing for Goodwill Columbus. Last year, the initiative gathered more than 4,000 pounds.

Ohio State student-athletes delivered 844 community service hours to the Columbus community during the month of October. With 19 teams clocking service hours, the Buckeyes volunteered time with organizations such as the Mid-Ohio Food Bank and UNICEF.

Tayler Hill, of the women’s basketball team, has played all 40 minutes in the first three games this year after playing a career-high 38 minutes last season.

Jared Sullinger, of the men’s basketball team, became the first freshman since 1977 (Herb Williams) to record a double-double in his debut.

The men’s soccer team will play in its fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament, three of which have been as a seeded team, and eighth overall, all under head coach John Bluem’s reign. The Buckeyes were the No. 4 seed a year ago, their highest ever. Previously, as the No. 5 seed, the Buckeyes advanced to the College Cup final in 2007 before falling to Wake Forest. The previous best finish was a trip to the third round in 2004 where they fell to eventual semifinalist Duke.

For the first time in program history the field hockey team will play in the NCAA championships semifinals. The Buckeyes downed No. 4-seed Syracuse, 3-2, in overtime in State College, Pa., Sunday Nov. 14 and with their 18th win of the season broke the program’s single-season wins mark.

Just eight games into her college career, Lisa Steffes, of the women’s hockey team, is just the fourth goalie to have three games with 40-plus saves in her career and the first to do so more than twice as a rookie.

David Tiemstra, of the men’s soccer team, anchored the Buckeye defense that earned its conference-leading ninth shutout of the year with a 1-0 win vs. Indiana Nov. 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State held the Hoosiers scoreless for just the second time this season.

Men’s hockey John Albert scored his 100th point Saturday Nov. 6 vs. Alabama-Huntsville. He is the 52nd Buckeye to accomplish the feat and first since Tom Fritsche in 2008.

The women’s soccer team won its first regular-season Big Ten title Nov. 5 in front of the home crowd at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the title, the Buckeyes earn the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA championships.

With Aisling Coyle and Paula Pastor-Pitarque, members of the field hockey team, earning Big Ten Defensive and Freshman of the Year honors Thursday, Ohio State now has had seven student-athletes earn a major conference distinction, all under 15-year head coach Anne Wilkinson.

The wrestling team will be on either the Big Ten Network or BigTenNetwork.com at least five times this season. The 2010-11 campaign will represent the most extensive conference wrestling coverage in network history.

With the 1-0 win over Wisconsin at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Halloween, the men’s soccer team extended their conference-leading shutout mark to eight and allowed goals-against average to drop to 0.72 on the season.

Former wrestling letterwinner Reece Humphrey (2006-10) won his second-consecutive World University championships medal Wednesday Oct. 27 when he captured the bronze in the 132-pound division. In 2008, Humphrey, an NCAA runner-up, won the silver medal.

Freshman Blaz Rola of the men’s tennis team won the singles event at the ITA Midwest Regional Oct. 25. The victory marked the fourth time in five seasons a Buckeye has won the singles crown at the tournament.

John Albert of the men’s hockey team had his second career two-goal game at Ferris State Oct. 23 and first since Nov. 29, 2008 vs. Nebraska-Omaha. It was his second three-point night of the season.
Friday Oct. 22
The field hockey team (11-3, 3-1 Big Ten) has won five straight games, including three against Big Ten opponents. During the win streak, Ohio State has outscored its opponents, 25-3.
Thursday Oct. 21
The women’s hockey team has tied its best start in team history by sweeping its first two series. The Buckeyes are led by junior assistant captains Laura McIntosh with 10 points and Natalie Spooner with nine points. Both have scored five goals. McIntosh also has five assists, followed by Spooner and sophomore Hokey Langan with four apiece.

Men’s cross country sophomore Donny Roys ran a personal record and Top 40 time of 24.21.4 Oct. 16 at the 2010 Indiana State Pre-National Invitational, helping Ohio State to a 13th-place finish overall on the 8k course.

Laura McIntosh wrote her name in another category of the women’s hockey record books Oct. 16, becoming just the fifth Buckeye in team history to have five points in a game as she scored a hat trick and added two assists in the Buckeyes’ 6-1 win over St. Cloud State at the OSU Ice Rink.

The women’s soccer team, which is sitting atop of the Big Ten with a 6-0 record, is 3-0-1 in overtime matches this season.

Former Buckeye lacrosse All-American Greg Bice is deeply involved in Lacrosse the Nations, an organization that utilizes sport and play to provide education, mentorship, hope and opportunity to children living in impoverished communities worldwide.

A 2010 All-American, men’s gymnastics’ Brandon Wynn won the rings titles with a two-day total of 32.25 at the VISA U.S. Championships, becoming the first Buckeye to win the championship since two-time Olympian Raj Bhavsar, who won at the 2004 championships.

Amanda Furrer, a member of the rifle team, helped the U.S. National Team win the 50-meter 3-position women’s junior team competition at the 50th International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship in Munich, Germany, this past summer. She finished fifth in the 50-meter, 3-position women’s junior individual championship.

An Ohio State athletics landmark was reached in cyberspace over the weekend (Oct. 2-3) as www.Facebook.com/Buckeyes – the official Facebook fan page for the OSU athletics department – topped 500,000 followers. Ohio State’s Facebook exposure is not limited to within the U.S. borders. In fact, it is followed in nearly 20 countries and more 20 languages (including some clever followers who claim to speak English-Pirate).

Former Buckeye men’s tennis standout Justin Kronauge was named assistant coach of the squad, head coach Ty Tucker announced. Kronauge, who earned his bachelor’s degree in finance in August, is the program’s leader in singles (147), doubles (128), and combined (275) wins.

The last six matches between the women’s soccer team and the Nittany Lions have been one-goal games. The Buckeyes were able to pull out a 1-0 victory in overtime Sunday Oct. 3 to move to 8-2-1 and 2-0-0 in the Big Ten.

Former men’s tennis doubles partners Ross Wilson and Scott Green were the first tandem to win back-to-back ITA National Indoor Championships (2004 and 2005) in the then-27-year history of the tournament. Wilson and Green also were the first Ohio State duo to win a national tournament title.

The men’s soccer team was the first team to score two goals against No. 1 Akron since Nov. 7, 2009 when Hartwick put up a pair of tallies. The Buckeyes tied the Zips, 2-2, Sept. 29 in front of a home record crowd of 7,255 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

Former Ohio State golfer Jack Nicklaus will be named the No. 18 Big Ten Icon, the Big Ten Network announced Wednesday Sept. 22. As a sophomore at Ohio State, Nicklaus entered the 1960 U.S. Open and finished just two shots behind Arnold Palmer and set a new U.S. Open amateur record with a tournament score of 282.

The football Buckeyes did not record a penalty the entire game vs. Ohio in the 43-7 win last Saturday, Sept. 18.
Monday Sept. 20
The field hockey team recorded back-to-back wins against Top 10 teams during the weekend when it beat No. 9 Duke, 3-1, Sept. 18 and No. 7 Wake Forest, 3-2, in overtime Sept. 19. In three meetings, it is the first win over the Demon Deacons, an ACC power.
Friday Sept. 17
Men’s golf sophomore Jamie Sindelar capped off a stellar performance at the Marshall Invitational by finishing tied for second and firing back-to-back career-low rounds of 66. It was the best tournament finish for Sindelar, from Horseheads, N.Y., and he was close to being the second Marshall Invitational medalist in his family as his father, Joey, won the tournament in 1980, although Jamie did top his father’s score by 13 shots.

Four members of the synchronized swimming team are also members of the U.S. National Synchronized Swimming Team? Meghan Kinney, Michelle Theriault, Paige Ramsey and Lauren Robinson all will compete this weekend at the FINA World Cup in China.

With fall practice starting, the baseball team returns 20 players, including seven seniors with significant playing time – such as 137-game starter Tyler Engle.

The 2010-11 men’s hockey team returns 19 letterwinners from the team a year ago, including three of the top four scorers, six defensemen and all three goalies. The roster features six NHL draft picks and is a veteran laden team with 11 seniors.

The men’s golf team has won the Marshall Invitational in Huntington, W. Va., 17 times in the 40-year history of the event. The Buckeyes will go for No. 18 starting today and tomorrow at the Guyan Country Club.

For the seventh-consecutive season, at least one true freshman has made his first collegiate start for the men’s soccer team. In the opener vs. College of Charleston, both Sage Gardner and Omar Vallejo took the pitch as rookies with Vallejo tallying the assist on Chris Hegngi’s gamewinner in the 24th minute.

Four of the last six meetings between the field hockey Buckeyes and Louisville have gone into extra time. Ohio State has won back-to-back overtime games against the Cardinals, including the Sept. 8 4-3 victory, which improves Ohio State to 15-5 all-time against Louisville.

The football team has not lost a home opener in 33 years. The last loss was Sept. 16, 1978 when No. 6 Ohio State suffered a 19-0 loss to No. 5 Penn State in Woody Hayes’ final season as head coach.

Since 1991, the men’s soccer team is 14-3-3 in its first home game of the year, while John Bluem is 7-2-2 in home season openers in his 14 seasons as head coach of the Buckeyes.

Three-time wrestling All-American J.D. Bergman (2004-08) will compete in his first World Wrestling Championship in Moscow Sept. 6-12. Bergman will wrestle at 96 kg (211.5 pounds).

Men’s soccer goalkeeper Matt Lampson’s 11 saves against Michigan last Saturday served not only as a career high, but also the most saves in a game by a Buckeye goalkeeper in at least a decade.
