BELGRADE, Serbia-Ohio State sophomore Evan Turner and his United States team is preparing for the start of the World University Games Friday vs. Finland.
After going 2-1 in exhibition play, Turner said he and the team will be ready for the start of the tournament this weekend.
“They play more physical over here,” Turner said. “They have their tricks when you get into the lane. I think that will help me this season with being more alert and patient. You can’t lose your cool.”
In the team’s only loss, to host Serbia, the home team shot nearly 50 foul shots in a 98-82 victory over the U.S.
“Playing over here is way different than back in the states,” Turner said. “We are playing in an extremely hostile environment.”
With three games under its belt, the U.S. is looking forward to playing for real, Turner said.
“We know what to look for now and how to play,” Turner said. “These teams have been playing together for five or six years. They are professionals. We just need to play for 40 minutes. We managed about 25 vs. the Serbians the first time around.”
Turner also is looking forward to returning to familiar meals in his homeland.
“The food here is a little different but there is a mall nearby with American fast food.”
