Ashley, Taz and Cassie Named 2009 Team Captains – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The captains for the 2009 Ohio State women’s soccer team have been selected by a vote of the team and leading the Buckeyes this year will be seniors Ashley Bowyer and Lauren “Taz” Robertson and fourth-year junior Cassie Dickerson. Bowyer, from Aliso Viejo, Calif., and Dickerson, from Kalamazoo, Mich., will serve as captains for a second consecutive season. Robertson is from Mission Viejo, Calif.
““I thought the presentations by these leaders were fantastic and from the heart,” Ohio State coach Lori Walker said. “I see a new light shining on this team with a strong sense of ownership and a huge commitment to work rate. That is definitely inspiring.”
A little about each of the captains:
- Bowyer has started every Ohio State game over the past three years, 62 in all, at forward. She is the team’s leading returning scorer with 23 career points and she also leads with 11 assists, a total that ranks 13th all-time at OSU. Her 105 career shots also rank 13th at OSU. Ashley is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and she is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.
- Robertson has started at goalkeeper in 56 games over the past three seasons. She ranks second on Ohio State’s goalkeeper record charts with 17 shutouts and third with 250 saves. She also owns two of the Top 10 seasons for goals against average and her career 1.36 goals against average is second-best all-time at Ohio State. She is 29-24-4 as a starting GK.
- Dickerson, a defender, was named an assistant captain in 2008 despite having not played in a game for the Buckeyes. That’s because she is a leader. She has played in only three games as a Buckeye all in 2008 as knee injuries have ended each of her three fall seasons. A senior academically, Cassie is a three -time OSU Scholar-Athlete and an Academic all-Big Ten honoree.
One current member of the team said that all three of the captains have great leadership qualities and that “when things get hard, these are the three individuals on the team that will help push us through.”
Another liked the fact that they were teammates one could confide in.
And another had these thoughts to say about the captains:
Ashley “Ashley will leave it all out on the field. She is someone members of the team know they can turn to on the field if they need help. She also is someone who loves competing and will always give her all.”
Taz “Taz is a vocal leader who will tell you how it is and will be the first to correct herself if she makes any mistakes. She also is a great communicator between coaches and the players.”
Cassie “Cassie is someone who always plays with heart. She works hard and you know that she will do what she says. She doesn’t just lead by being vocal. She also leads by action.”
