Ohio State vs. California
Ohio State last faced California during the 2007-08 season. California leads the overall series vs. Ohio State 9-8. The last two games in the series have gone to the Buckeyes in postseason tournaments. The Buckeyes won the 1960 National Championship with a 75-55 victory March 19, 1960 over the Bears in San Francisco. Ohio State defeated Cal March 24, 2008 at historic St. John Arena in Columbus, 73-56. That game was a part of Ohio State’s run toward the 2008 National Invitation Tournament, won at Madison Square Garden against UMass.

Turner streak a first since ’80-81
Evan Turner has opened the season with three-consecutive double-doubles for the first time since Clark Kellogg did so in 1980-81. Turner has reached 10 or more points and rebounds vs. Alcorn State (14/17), James Madison (24-17) and North Carolina (23/11). Kellogg began the 1980-81 campaign with double doubles in five-consecutive games vs. Cleveland State (23/14), at Kentucky (12/13), Colgate (16/17), South Alabama (18/18) and at Arizona State (18/10). Greg Oden was the last Buckeye to reach at least 10 points and rebounds in the same game in three consecutive games. He did so in March of 2007 vs. Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament title game (12/10) and then vs. Central Connecticut State (19/10) and Xavier (14/12) in the NCAA tournament. Terence Dials, the 2006 Big Ten Player of the Year, was the last Buckeye to post four-consecutive double-doubles with five in a row vs. Illinois (19/16), at Wisconsin (24/11), Northwestern (14/15), at Michigan State (19/10) and Michigan (22/11) from Feb. 12-25, 2006.
The Next to 1,000…
Evan Turner has scored 946 points over 73 Ohio State games in his career for an average of 12.9 points a game. He needs 54 to become the 44th player in Ohio State history to reach 1,000 career points. Two others on the current roster are on pace to reach 1,000 points. Junior David Lighty has 577 career points over 86 career games. Jon Diebler has 633 points in his two seasons at Ohio State. William Buford is well on his way as well (411).
Wins follow Buckeye double-doubles
Ohio State has had a player record a double-double (10+ points, rebs, assists, steals or blocks) in 790 games. The Buckeyes are 535-255 in those contests (.677). Evan Turner has 14 career double-doubles and the Buckeyes are 8-6 in those contests, including wins in six of his last eight games with a D-D. Turner is among the Top 25 players in OSU history with 14 double-doubles tied at No. 22 with Greg Oden and Robert Dove.
Tale of Two halves vs. Tar Heals
Ohio State shot 29 percent from the field in the first half vs. North Carolina Thursday going 9-31 from the field. In the second half, the Buckeyes connected on 17-30 shots (.567) to finish at 43 percent shooting for the game. From long range, Ohio State went 1-10 in the first half and 5 of 11 in the second stanza. At the free throw line the Buckeyes shot 5 of 10 over the first 20 minutes and then 10 of 12 over the final 10 minutes. Both Ohio State and North Carolina tied with 26 field goals. The Tar Heels made one more 3 (7 to 6) and three more foul shots (18 to 15). The Buckeyes owned the rebounding edge 37-33 overall.

- Matta improved his career record to 231-78 in his 10th season as a head coach. He is 129-47 in his sixth year at Ohio State.
- Junior guard Evan Turner claimed his third-consecutive double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds with four assists and two steals against the Tar Heels.
- Turner hit the 20-point mark in a game for the 13th time in his Buckeye career. He also has 14 career games with 10 or more rebounds and 48 with 10 or more points.
- Senior center Kyle Madsen made his third start of the season at center, the fourth start of his career overall.
- Junior Jon Diebler moved to the No. 2 spot all-time in career 3-pointers made with three makes vs. the Tar Heels. He has a career total of 154 made to pass Brent Darby and Scoonie Penn, who were tied with 153 made all time. Diebler needs 88 made treys to catch Ohio State career leader Jamar Butler with 242 from 2005-08.
