Athletes of the Week
• Jeff See, a senior on the men’s cross country team, won the All-Ohio title Friday, finishing the 8K in a time of 26:07.9. See led Ohio State to a first-place finish at the championships for the squad’s first title at the All-Ohio since 2006.
• Jordan Jennewine, a junior on the women’s cross country team, led Ohio State to its first All-Ohio Championships team title since 1991, edging Cedarville freshman Katie Gillespie at the finish line to win the individual title in 18:10.3.

Men’s Cross Country
Head coach: Robert Gary
• Jeff See crossed the finish line in an 8K time of 26:07.9, leading Ohio State to a first-place finish at the 2009 All-Ohio Championships Oct. 2. The Buckeyes placed five runners in the Top 10, dominating two-time defending champion Malone 28-76 for their first title at the All-Ohio since 2006.

Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Karen Dennis
• Ohio State placed five runners in the Top 20 on its way to a decisive victory at the 2009 All-Ohio Championships Oct. 2, the Buckeyes’ first title at the All-Ohio since 1991. The Buckeyes 58 point total gave them a 17-point cushion over second-place Miami.
• Junior Jordan Jennewine led the way for the Scarlet and Gray, edging Cedarville freshman Katie Gillespie at the finish line to win the individual title in 18:10.3.

• After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation, Ohio State fell, 2-1, to Penn State in the fifth minute of overtime Oct. 2 in University Park, Pa. The Buckeyes got on the scoreboard first, as sophomore Aisling Coyle took the rebound off a Jena Cacciatore penalty corner shot and beat PSU goalkeeper Ali Meves at 13:44.

Head coach: Jim Tressel
• Sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor threw three touchdown passes, Brandon Saine rushed for 113 yards and the defense limited the Hoosiers to 18 rushing yards to lead Ohio State to a 33-14 win over Indiana Oct. 3 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind. Saine, making his first career start, had a career-high 17 carries for his career high rushing total. Additionally, Duron Carter and fullback Zach Boren each caught his first touchdown pass.
• Jim Cordle is among 154 student-athletes vying for college football’s premier scholar-athlete award, the 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy. To be eligible, the athlete must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.

Men’s Golf

• Ohio State continues the 2009 fall season at the fourth- annual Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic Oct. 5-6 in South Bend, Ind. The two-day, 54-hole event hosted by the University of Notre Dame, will be held on the par 70, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course with shotgun starts beginning at 9 a.m. Monday and split-tee starts at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

No. 18 Women’s Golf
Head coach: Therese Hession
• With a team score of 878 (+14) on the par 72, 6,246-yard University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis., the Buckeyes concluded the 2009 edition of the Lady Northern Invitational tied for second with Big Ten foe Michigan State.
• Leading Ohio State with a two-day total of 1-under 215 was sophomore Allie White who finished the tournament in third. Joining White in the top 5 was freshman Rachel Rohanna who carded a score of 218 (+2) to finish fourth.

Men’s Hockey
Head coach: John Markell
• The Buckeyes rallied twice to tie the game but suffered a 3-2 loss in overtime to Western Ontario in an exhibition game Oct. 4 in the OSU Ice Rink. Scoring for Ohio State were C.J. Severyn and Peter Boyd.
• Ohio State was slated fourth by both the coaches and the media in the 2009-10 CCHA Preseason Polls. The Buckeyes followed Michigan, Notre Dame and Miami and were trailed by Northern Michigan in fifth place.

Women’s Hockey (0-0-2)
Head coach: Jackie Barto
• Ohio State opened its 2009-10 season with a nonconference road series at No. 10 Boston University, Oct. 2-3. The teams skated to two overtime draws with scores of 1-1 Friday and 4-4 Saturday. The Buckeyes rallied from deficits twice in the third period.
• Leading the Buckeyes with two goals was sophomore Melissa Feste, while freshman Minttu Tuominen had a goal and assist in her first collegiate series. Also scoring for OSU was Teal Bishop and Kim Theut.
• The season-opener marked Jackie Barto’s 500th career game behind the hockey bench. She is in her 11th season at the helm of the Buckeyes and in the 16th year as a head coach overall.

Men’s Lacrosse

• Ohio State prepped for the season with an intrasquad game Oct. 2 inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Scarlet squad rallied to tie the game and take the lead in the final quarter but the Gray tied the game in the last minute and Mike Pires tallied in overtime to give Gray the win.
• The team continues fall ball when it hosts Johns Hopkins in the Thumbs Up Event at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 at Upper Arlington High School. All proceeds from the event, including tickets and concessions, go to the Michael Robert Breschi Memorial Scholarship, named in honor of former lacrosse coach Joe Breschi’s son who passed away in an accident at age 3 in 2004. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased online at OhioStateBuckeyes.com, at any Ticketmaster outlet or at the Ohio State Ticket Office, along with at the game. Children 6 and under will be admitted free and there will be a postgame autograph session.
Women’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Sue Stimmel
• The Buckeyes opened their fall ball schedule with a scrimmage against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., Sept. 30. Ohio State tied the Irish 10-10 after two halves before dropping the decision in a third “half.”

Rifle
Head coach: Pat Cherry
• Ohio State opened the preseason with a 4,558-4,458 victory over a team comprise of alumni and boosters. Amanda Furrer won both individual events for the Buckeyes shooting a 581 in smallbore rifle and a 590 in air rifle. Buckeye Nick Novello was second in air rifle with a 580 and Gina Cheliras finished third in smallbore rifle with a 566.

Rowing
Head coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• After a little more than two weeks of fall practice, Ohio State competed in a friendly scrimmage with Michigan Oct. 3 in Ann Arbor. The Buckeyes and Wolverines completed five races in rainy and cool conditions.
• Ohio State has another fall scrimmage scheduled for Nov. 15 at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
No. 15 Men’s Soccer (5-2-3, 1-1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: John Bluem
• After three-consecutive road games, No. 15 Ohio State returned to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium and dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 25 Northwestern Oct. 4.
• The Buckeyes suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of top-ranked Akron, 3-0, Sept. 30 at Lee Jackson Field in front of a sellout and record crowd of 2,473 in Akron, Ohio.

• No. 15 Ohio State dropped a 2-1 decision to Penn State Oct. 4 at Jeffrey Field in State College, Pa. The Buckeyes scored in the 85th minute when freshman Lauren Granberg scored on a rebound of a shot by junior Lauren Steuer. The game marked the Buckeyes’ first loss since Aug. 30 against Pittsburgh.

Softball

• Ohio State opened the ninth-annual Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic with two wins Oct. 3, defeating Dayton, 11-1, and Ohio University, 7-1, at Fred Beekman Park on The Ohio State University campus.
• The Buckeyes wrapped up the OCCC with two wins Oct. 4, defeating Kent State, 10-1, in five innings and Bowling Green, 5-2, in seven. With four wins at the classic, the Buckeyes are 5-1 in fall ball action.
Men’s Tennis
Head coach: Ty Tucker
• The reigning four-time Big Ten Champion and 2008-09 national-runners up Buckeyes started the 2009 fall schedule at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships Oct. 3 with pre-qualifying rounds in Tulsa, Okla. Five Buckeyes in Chase Buchanan, Balazs Novak and Justin Kronauge received selections in the singles main draw, while Matt Allare and Shuhei Uzawa will compete in the main draw doubles beginning Oct. 8.

Women’s Tennis
Head coach: Chuck Merzbacher
• Ohio State opened the 2009-10 season at the 2009 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Saturday in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Buckeyes senior Kirsten Flower and junior Paloma Escobedo each posted first-round straight-set wins in pre-qualifying singles before falling in three sets in the second round of action. The Buckeye doubles team of Flower and senior Christina Keesey were defeated in the first round of pre-qualifying.
• Flower advanced out of the first round with a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 2 seed Martina Pavalec of Wake Forest. She was then downed by Aeriel Ellis of Texas in the second round in three sets. The Buckeye senior won the first set, 7-5, but then dropped the last two, 7-5, 7-5.
• Escobedo downed Kelsey Garland of Texas Tech in the opening round, 6-1, 6-2, but was eliminated by TCU’s Kayla Duncan in three sets. Escobedo won the first set, 6-3, but Duncan rallied to win the last two sets, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the third round for a chance to earn a spot in the qualifying round.
• In doubles, Flower and Keesey, the No. 3 seed in the draw, lost to Davidson and Urbina of Texas A&M, 8-1, in the first round.

Women’s Volleyball (14-3, 2-2 Big Ten)
Head coach: Geoff Carlson
• The Buckeyes swept past Iowa with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-22) victory Oct. 3 in St. John Arena. Katie Dull posted a match-high 16 points on 16 kills while hitting .500. Anna Szerszen had 10.5 points with nine kills (.667), one ace serve and one assist block and Kristen Dozier contributed 10 points with 10 kills (.450).
• Ohio State fell to Wisconsin 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21) Oct. 2 in St. John Arena. Dull posted a match-high 17.5 points in the contest with 17 kills (.324) and one assist block.

Wrestling

• J Jaggers, two-time NCAA champion and current volunteer assistant coach, was honored at the team’s second-annual The National Championships Wall Ceremony Sept. 26 at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. Arguably the most eye-catching feature of Ohio State’s training facility, the northeast portion of the room honors the 11 former and current Buckeye national champions with life-size likenesses of each wrestler. The replicas stand approximately 6 feet in stature and display each wrestler in an action or stance shot during one of their championship seasons.
