Athletes of the Week
• Ashley Hughes, a senior on the women’s volleyball team, directed the Buckeyes to 3-1 wins over Purdue and Indiana last week at setter to earn Co-Big Ten Player of the Week. She had 48 assists against Purdue, adding five kills, seven digs and one solo block. Hughes posted a career-high 53 assists in the Indiana match, adding three kills, one ace serve, three assist blocks and a career-high 19 digs.
For the weekend, Hughes averaged 12.62 assists and 3.25 digs per set. The weekend wins were OSU’s first weekend sweep of conference opponents in 19 weeks dating back to 2007 with wins at Iowa (3-0) and at Minnesota (3-2). It was the first home weekend sweep since the last weekend in 2006 with wins over Northwestern (3-0) and Illinois (3-0).
• Hokey Langan, a forward on the women’s hockey team, tallied four points, including the gamewinning goal, in Ohio State’s first split at Wisconsin since 2003. The freshman from Chatham, Ontario, had a goal and assist in each game. She set up the second Buckeye goal Oct. 23 before scoring unassisted with less than five minutes remaining for the 4-3 victory, snapping Ohio State’s 21-game winless streak against the Badgers. The following night Langan assisted on the team’s first goal and scored the third as the Buckeyes fell 5-3.
Langan now leads the WCHA freshmen in scoring with nine points on four goals and five assists. Her nine points also lead the Buckeyes and she is tied for the team lead in goals.
• Senior women’s soccer goalkeeper Lauren Robertson picked up her second-consecutive Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award after she tallied a pair of shutouts, at Illinois and home against Purdue. She has posted 12 clean sheets in 2009 and 29 for her career, placing her alone in second place in Big Ten history.
