Buckeyes Lose Series Finale To Quinnipiac, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes
10/10/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Ice Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Quinnipiac broke a 1-all tie 7:51 into the third period and added an empty netter as the Bobcats downed the Ohio State men’s hockey team, 3-1, Friday in Value City Arena in the series finale between the teams. Quinnipiac earned the sweep after a 4-2 win in the opener.
Ohio State (0-2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on freshman Alex Carlson’s first career goal and the Bobcats (2-0-0) tied the game on Zach Hansen’s tally 4:02 into the second. The score was deadlocked until Eric Lampe scored shorthanded on a 2-on-1 break at 7:51 of the third. The final goal came at 19:05 when Mike Atkinson scored into an empty net. The Buckeyes outshot Quinnipiac, 45-28, in the game, including 25-6 in the first period.
Ohio State scored the lone goal of the first period. Just before a shift change junior Shane Sims sent a long pass to senior Mathieu Picard. His shot on the fly was saved by Quinnipiac goalie Dan Clarke but Carlson was there to put in the rebound from a tough angle with the goalie out of position. The Buckeyes controlled play in the period, outshooting the Bobcats, 25-6. Ohio State was assessed just one penalty, a coincidental minor. The Buckeyes were 0-for-2 on the power play and put five shots on net with the man advantage.
Quinnipiac tied the game when Zach Hansen’s shot from the point floated past Buckeye goalie Cal Heeter just three seconds after a Buckeye penalty expired. The Buckeyes held the Bobcats scoreless on the power play in the period and limited them to one shot on their five chances combined, highlighted by the trio of Picard, Sims and Patrick Schafer holding QU without a shot on a 5-on-3 advantage for 55 seconds midway through the period. Ohio State had one shot on two power-play opportunities.
Lampe, who had been stopped by Heeter on two shorthanded breakaways earlier in the game, put Quinnipiac on top when he roofed the puck while skating down the ice shorthanded on a 2-on-1. Brandon Wong had his second assist of the game on the tally, Lampe’s third of the series. The Buckeyes tried to put pressure on Quinnipiac through the rest of the game, outshooting the Bobcats, 14-10, but could not connect for a goal,. Atkinson ended the game when he was able to redirect Yuri Bouharevich’s long clearing pass into the empty Buckeye net at 19:05. The Buckeyes had the only two power plays in the stanza.
Ohio State outshot Quinnipiac, 45-28, in the game. Heeter made 25 stops for the Buckeyes in 58:50 between the pipes. Clarke had 44 saves in all 60 minutes.
Neither team was able to score on the power play – Ohio State was 0-for-6 and Quinnipiac was 0-for-5.
Postgame Notes
Ohio State returns to action with two games in Columbus vs. No. 2 Denver next week. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Value City Arena and at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Nationwide Arena.

Sims was the only Buckeye with two points in the series after scoring a goal Thursday.
Postgame Quotes
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On his team’s performance to start the game
“In the first period we played well. We were just unable to sustain it. We’ve got to educate ourselves on how to keep it going for a whole 60 minutes. We get tired and we start to play poorly and it’s not enough. We made our goal tonight the way we wanted to. Now we just need more from the players. It’s disappointing.”
On Quinnipiac’s performance
“Their goaltender played well today and they also blocked well. Unfortunately, we made some bad decisions too. There was a lot of good but we must sustain it for a whole game. We ran into a hungry team. They deserved to win.”
On the Buckeye team
“Carlson scored a good one for us and I thought the freshmen played better tonight. These kids will get better. I expect the juniors to show up and play better. We have to get better.”
Sergio Somma, Ohio State junior forward
On opening weekend losses
“We couldn’t start any worse. We’re a good team; this is the part where we battle adversity. It’s gut-check time for us. We’ll look in the mirror and then come out next weekend and see what we’re made of.”
On leadership
“We need to lead by example. There’s no talking that should be done. We have to work hard this week. The guys will follow by example. We just didn’t get it done tonight. We need to improve our work ethic and the effort will be there.”
On coming into the third period
“We felt positive. We were ready to work hard. We knew it was a big period and whoever won the period would win the game. It just didn’t happen, and now we have to figure out what kind of team we have.”
Rand Pecknold, Quinnipiac head coach
On his team’s slow start to the game
“We were not good in the first period. Give Ohio State credit – they were excellent and just kept coming at us. We didn’t have much energy, but we hung in there and were able to regroup.”
On how Quinnipiac and Ohio State approached the game
“The pressure was not on us. In the second and third periods we came out and played to win – it seemed like they were playing not to lose. We wanted to get out of here with the sweep.”
On whether he was surprised by this team’s performance in the series
“With 10 freshmen I am a little surprised by how well we played, but it is great group of guys. We got great play out of our young guys and great leadership from our four upperclassmen. We really came together as a team for this trip.”
Dan Clarke, sophomore goalie
On his expectations heading into the series
“We expected to play well, but I don’t know that we expected to come in and get the sweep, especially against a great team like Ohio State. Our team just came together.”
Eric Lampe, junior center
On Ohio State underestimating the Bobcats
“They might have taken us lightly, but that’s expected. We just came in here and threw the kitchen sink at them. Maybe people will realize who Quinnipiac is now.”
On battling through a slow start
“We just had to stay close and keep fighting because they really came out hard in the first period. We were able to figure it out in the second period and thankfully we came out with the win.”
