COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State and Bowling Green tied in a women’s soccer game Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, 1-1. Ohio State, which out-shot BGSU, 23-14, is now 0-2-2 on the season. BG is 1-2-2.
Ashley Bowyer scored the Ohio State goal in the 57th minute off a free kick. The junior, who leads the team with two goals and five points this season, drove a wicked, 25-yard shot from in front of the goal that bent around the wall and found the right side of the net. It was her second such goal of the season.
The goal came after a dominating start to the second half by the Buckeyes. Consider:
- Just three minutes into the half Lauren Beachy dribbled untouched into the 18-yard box and sent a cross that was deflected to the top of the box. Bowyer pounded a shot that BG goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault caught for the save.
- Emily Esbrook sent a pass to Brook Taylor in the box nine minutes into the half but the play was ruled offside.
- One minute later, in the 55th minute, Caitlin Colfer, who led all players with five shots, followed with a shot on goal.
- In the 63rd minute Beachy sent another crossing pass that Brook Taylor wasn’t able to fully connect with before she was hammered to the ground.
- Amy Graeff, who displayed leadership and a nice passing touch in 40 minutes off the bench, made a sliding tackle in the 65th minute, came up with the ball and then passed to Lisa Collison. Collison sent a through ball that a streaking Beachy was just not able to reach.
- Two minutes later Collison shook her defender with a nice fake and sent a ball toward the goal that nearly curled itself into the net.
At that point Ohio State was holding a 12-5 lead in shots but the score was still 1-0.
Bowling Green countered with the tying goal in the 73rd minute. Brianne Eisenhard scored from five yards out with an assist to Gina Rossi. The play started with a free kick to the right of Ohio State goalkeeper Lauren Robertson. Rossi headed the ball and it bounced high and into an Ohio State defender and then into the cross bar. The deflected ball landed in front of Eisenhard who put it away for her first marker of the season.
The first half was scoreless. Both teams had opportunities to score, which was played for the most part in the BG half of the field. Ohio State coach Lori Walker felt it was a pivotal half.
“We had an opportunity to bury them in the first half,” Walker said, “but we are not taking care of the things needed to win.”
The Buckeyes had six first-half corner kicks with all of them coming in the first half of the half. BGSU had three. For the game, Ohio State had eight corners to six for BG.
