In his first race for the Scarlet and Gray, redshirt-freshman Taylor Williams of the men’s cross country team took home first place, crushing the field in the 6K race by 12 seconds in a time of 18:53.91 at the Kent State Short Course Open in Stow, Ohio, Aug. 29.
Tim Gabel, a senior defender on the men’s soccer team, was named most valuable player of the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic last weekend as he helped the Buckeyes claim their third-consecutive Wolstein Classic title Aug. 31. Gabel, an OSU tri-captain, notched a goal and two assists for Ohio State during the tournament as the Buckeyes went 2-0-0.

The Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2008 will be inducted Friday and recognized at the Ohio State-Ohio football game at noon Saturday.
The 2008 class includes: Men – Drew Durbin (gymnastics), John Edwards (baseball), Bobby Hoying (football), Fred Keller (lacrosse and soccer), Bob Todd (baseball coach) and Jeff Uhlenhake (football); Women – Krista Keir (track and field), Amy Langhals (golf), Maxi Meissner (rowing), Megan Mirick (lacrosse), Carolina Moraes (synchronized swimming) and Isabela Moraes (synchronized swimming).
In all, 82 women have been inducted since 1993 and 233 men have been honored since 1977.
Men’s Cross Country

Outdistancing his nearest opponent by more than 12 seconds, redshirt-freshman Taylor Williams crossed the finish line first in the 6K race in 18:53.91 at the Kent State Short Course Open in Stow, Ohio, Aug. 29.
A total of four Buckeyes finished in the Top 10 and nine in the Top 20 overall. Junior Christopher Olinger finished sixth in a time of 19:18.72, followed by sophomore Jake Edwards (19:24.16) for eighth and redshirt-sophomore Skyler Schmitt (19:30.80) for 10th.

In its third shut out of the Jim Tressel era, Ohio State defeated Youngstown State, 43-0, Aug. 30 in front of a crowd of 105, 011 in Ohio Stadium.
In the 119th season of Buckeye football, the Scarlet and Gray have won 30-consecutive season-opening games at Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State scored on all six possessions in the first half two touchdowns and four Ryan Pretorius FG’s and on nine of 11 possessions overall.
At the 6:52 mark of the first quarter, freshman Terrelle Pryor made his Ohio State debut. On his first play he completed a 9-yard pass to freshman Lamaar Thomas. On that drive, he took the Buckeyes 51 yards in 12 plays, capped off by a 31-yard FG by Pretorius.

Behind junior goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani’s seventh-career shutout, the Buckeyes began their 2008 campaign with a 2-0 win over Kent State Aug. 31 at North Turf Field. For her effort, Quintiliani earned the first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award of the season. It is the second time Quintiliani has received the weekly honor, also earning the award after the opening weekend of the 2006 season.
Redshirt-freshman Aisling Coyle set up both Ohio State goals, feeding the ball to sophomore Jenna Cacciatore minutes into the contest at 5:04. Coyle then passed the ball to senior Emily Mikac for the second score in the 18th minute for the eventual final.
Prior to the start of the 2008 season, seniors Linda Haussener and Mikac were selected co-captains Aug. 26. It is the second-consecutive season Haussener has been voted a captain and the first such honor for Mikac.

Courtesy of a successful penalty kick in the 28th minute by senior Danny Irizarry, Ohio State would hold on for the 2-1 win vs. Florida Gulf Coast in the second game of the third annual Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when senior defender Tim Gabel headed in a corner kick from Irizarry.
Behind a double-overtime goal by freshman Dave Tiemstra at 105:19, the Scarlet and Gray defeated Central Florida, 2-1, and won the Bert and Iris Wolstein Classic Aug. 31. Ohio State rallied from a 1-0 deficit and tied the score in the 89th minute courtesy of a goal from sophomore Sam Scales to send the match into extra sessions. Gabel was on the assist for both goals.

Ohio State fought back twice from two-goal deficits but UW-Milwaukee converted a penalty kick in the 88th minute to record a 4-3 victory over the Buckeyes Aug. 27 in Milwaukee, Wis.
After trailing, 2-1, early in the second half, sophomore Genna Brand cut the Panthers’ lead in half on a goal in the 53rd minute. She was assisted by senior Caitlin Colfer. Freshman Paige Maxwell notched her first-career Buckeye goal in the 63rd minute after UW-Milwaukee tallied a score to go up 3-1. Senior Lisa Collison and freshman Caitlyn Martin were credited with the assists. Finally, with about one minute remaining in regulation, junior Ashley Bowyer scored the game-tying goal on a 25-yard free kick after the Panthers were issued a yellow card. However, following a whistle on the Scarlet and Gray in the box, UW-Milwaukee scored the gamewinning goal on a penalty kick.
Remaining in Milwaukee, the Buckeyes dropped a 2-1 decision to Marquette, Aug. 29. Sophomore Emily Esbrook scored 1:39 into the second half to give Ohio State a 1-0 advantage (Brand and Martin were on the assists), but the Golden Eagles scored the game-tying goal with just six seconds remaining in regulation and then notched the gamewinner 10 minutes into overtime.

Men’s Tennis
Head Coach: Ty Tucker
Jeremy Wurtzman, a three-year letterwinner and All-American for the Buckeyes from 2002-04, was named assistant coach Ty Tucker, head coach, announced. Wurtzman spent two seasons as the assistant coach at Denver before returning to Ohio State.
Women’s Volleyball (2-1; 0-0 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Geoff Carlston
Hosting the Sports Imports Classic in St. John Arena Aug. 29-30, Ohio State and first-year head coach Geoff Carlston garnered their first win of the 2008 season vs. Toledo, 3-0, in the first match of the Classic.
Three Buckeyes scored 10 or more points in the win, with sophomore Katie Dull leading the way with 13.5 points from 11 kills, two solo blocks and an assist block. Junior setter Ashley Hughes and sophomore Kaila Calhoun scored 10 and 10.5 points, respectively, in the win.
In their second match of the Classic, the Buckeyes dropped a 3-1 decision to Xavier. Ohio State won the first set, 25-22, before losing the next three sets. Dull led all players with 26 points in the match on 23 kills, one ace, one solo block and two assist blocks. Junior Kristen Dozier scored 20.5 points from 19 kills, one solo block and one assist block.
The Scarlet and Gray rebounded with a 3-0 victory over Youngstown State in final match of the Classic. The Buckeyes scored first in each of the three sets, allowing the Penguins to tie the score only once early in the second set. Calhoun and Dull led the scoring with 15.5 and 14.5 points, respectively.
