Women’s Volleyball: Ohio State Defeats Chicago State, 3-0 at Kent State/Mizuno Open – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (8-3 overall), behind a match-high 13.5 points from Kelli Barhorst, defeated Chicago State (0-13), 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-9) in the second match of the Kent State/Mizuno Open Friday. Barhorst had a match-high 10 kills while hitting .556 and added a solo block and five assists. Cougar Shamara Clark recorded a team-high six points for Chicago State with six kills.
Ohio State opened set one with a Chelsea Noble kill and an ace serve from Ashley Hughes for a 2-0 lead. At 5-2, three ace serves from Susan Halverson, a Barhorst kill and a Cougar error gave the Buckeyes a 9-2 lead. After a kill from Hope Lockett made it 9-3, OSU kills from Kristen Dozier and Lisa Prang made the lead 11-3. Chicago State made it 11-4 with a Mazvita Maziveyi kill. Ohio State scored the next six points starting with a Dozier kill and an ace serve from Laura Kastein. The run continued with a Noble kill, a Hughes-Dozier block, a Maria Ralston ace serve and a Dozier kill for a 17- 4 lead. At 22-7, a Barhorst kill and a Betsy Hone-Barhorst block made it set point at 24-7. A Hughes ace serve ended the set at 25-7. The Buckeyes hit .500 in the set to .000 for Chicago State.
Tied at one in the second set, a Barhorst kill, a Hughes ace serve and two Cougar errors gave Ohio State a 5-1 lead. A Niena Posey kill made it 5-2. Kills from Barhorst and Clark put the score at 6-3. A Chy Crichton ace serve cut the margin to 6-4. The Buckeyes scored the next seven points to open a 13-4 lead. The run began with kills from Barhorst and Lisa Prang. A Halverson ace serve, three Cougar errors and a solo block from Prang made it 13-4. Leading, 20-9, OSU kills from Noble and Barhorst and a Cougar error put the lead at 23-9. A Buckeye error made it 23-10. Ohio State reached set point at 24-10 off a Chicago State error. A Clark kill stopped the set point at 24-11. Ohio State closed out the set with a Barhorst kill for a 25-11 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .391 for the set to -.071 for Chicago State.
Ohio State opened the third set by scoring the first six points. A Chicago State error started the run followed by a Barhorst solo block. Two ace serves from Hughes, a Cougar error and a Hone-Barhorst block made it 6-0, Buckeyes. A Jean Keenan kill stopped the run at 6-1. Two Cougar errors and a Noble ace serve made it 9-1. Leading 17-6, a kill and ace serve by Hughes, a Noble kill and a Barhorst-Noble block gave Ohio State a 21-6 margin. Two Clark kills and an OSU error cut the lead to 21-9. A Cougar error, a Hone kill and a Barhorst-Hone block set match point at 24-9. Prang’s fourth kill of the match ended the set at 25-9 and gave Ohio State a 3-0 victory. The Buckeyes hit .294 for the set to -.185 for Chicago State.
Ohio State hit .397 for the match while Chicago State hit -.096. The Buckeyes had a 27-16 advantage in kills and a 15-2 margin in ace serves. Hughes posted a career-high six aces in the match with Halverson adding a career-high four. Chicago State had five service errors in the match to one for the Buckeyes. Ohio State had a 28-22 advantage in digs with Noble collecting a match-high eight. At the net, the Buckeyes had ten team blocks and did not give up a block to the Cougars. OSU’s Barhorst posted a match-high six blocks with a solo and five assists. For Ohio State, Hughes recorded a match-high 15 assists with Hone adding seven. Hanya Minta posted 14 assists for Chicago State.
The Buckeyes close out play in the Kent State/Mizuno Open at 7 p.m. Saturday when they face host Kent State (10-2)
