Recycling project aims to have another winning season
COLUMBUS, Ohio After exceeding expectations in its inaugural season, the Scarlet, Gray & Green sustainability campaign again looks to Buckeye fans to help continue the recycling project’s success on football game day Saturdays during the 2008 season.
In 2007, Ohio State collected 81 tons of recyclable materials inside Ohio Stadium and 38 tons from the tailgating lots. All together, Ohio State recycled 119 tons of waste during home games, saving enough manufacturing energy to heat 82 homes for a year.
“The department of athletics joined the university in the Scarlet, Gray & Green sustainability campaign a year ago at Ohio Stadium in an effort to be a campus leader in recycling at Ohio State,” Gene Smith, Ohio State director of athletics, said. “In doing so, we were able to keep nearly 120 tons of waste from Ohio landfills last year. We hope Buckeye fans will again help us reach this goal in 2008.”
Once again, tailgaters will receive white plastic bags to encourage them to collect bottles, cans, paper and cardboard and put the bags in the scarlet recycling dumpsters stationed in targeted tailgating areas. Trash dumpsters will be located near the recycling dumpsters for disposal of all other trash.
In the stadium, all waste will be collected together and sorted afterwards by Waste Management.
This collaborative recycling effort between the Ohio State Athletics Department and Office of Business and Finance began in January 2007. The university initiated a sustainability program both in the stadium and at the tailgating lots to help address the amount of trash generated on campus at Buckeye football games.
Recycling is one element of the university’s Scarlet, Gray & Green sustainability program. This fall, the program will be expanded to include recycling containers in all classroom areas. Additional efforts include:
Campus bio-diesel conversion
Green office supplies
Energy-saving lights
Energy conservation audits
