COLUMBUS, Ohio Fifteen former and current Ohio State student-athletes received their degree from The Ohio State University at summer commencement ceremonies Sunday in the Schottenstein Center. Among the graduates were former men’s basketball player Ivan Harris, men’s tennis player Devin Mullings, men’s soccer goalie Casey Latchem, wrestler T.J. Enright and track athlete Jenna Griffin.
Harris, a starter on the 2006-07 Big Ten champion men’s basketball team, is receiving his degree in African-American and African studies. Harris, a former High School McDonald’s All-American, helped lead the Buckeyes to a berth in the 2007 national title game with his outstanding shooting.
Mullings, who received his degree in communication, competed in singles and doubles competitions for the Bahamas at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. Competing at Ohio State from 2004-07, Mullings was a three-time All-Big Ten selection as well as a three-time NCAA tournament participant. His 116 career singles wins are the third best all-time for a Buckeye tennis player.
Griffin, the 2008 Big Ten Medal of Honor award winner, received a degree in strategic communications to add to the marketing degree she earned in June 2007. A standout on the track and in the classroom, Griffin is a four-time Big Ten champion, winning the 60-meter title in 2005 and 2007, the 100-meter crown in 2005 and the 4×100 meter relay in 2008. Griffin also earned All-America honors in the 400-meters in the 2007 indoor season.
Latchem, a communication graduate, backstopped the Buckeyes to the 2007 NCAA College Cup championship game and was named to the College Cup all-tournament team. He was the Big Ten Championship Defensive Player MVP as the Buckeyes won the conference tournament title in a shootout. Latchem ended his career first in the Buckeye record book with a .87 goals-against average and set the program standard with 15 shutouts in 2007.
Enright, who received his degree in family resource management, was a two-time NCAA qualifier for the wrestling team. Perhaps one of the most exciting matches of Enright’s career occurred when he defeated No. 1-ranked and undefeated (27-0) Nick Simmons of Michigan State, 4-2, in overtime Feb. 2, 2007 in front of the OSU home crowd in St. John Arena. He was a two-time Big Ten Wrestler of the Week award winner in addition to being an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
