2007-08 ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS
| 06/09/2008 – Ohio State Student-Athletes Receive Degrees at Spring Commencement 115 current and former Buckeye student-athletes received their degree from The Ohio State University at spring commencement Sunday in Ohio Stadium. Among the honorees are former football player Mike Doss, former diver Kellen Harkness, pistol team member Teresa Meyer and track and field athletes Veronica and Lenny Jatsek. Doss, who helped lead the football team to the 2002 national championship, returned to school and completed his degree in communications. Doss was the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2002, was both a three-time All-Big Ten and All-American selection and was a two-time semi-finalist for the Thorpe Award. Doss spent the last five seasons playing in the NFL, spending four years (2003-06) with the Indianapolis Colts and 2007 with the Minnesota Vikings. Meyer, a native of Dearborn, Mich., who completed her eligibility this past spring, will receive her degree in human resources. During her time on the pistol squad, Meyer was a seven-time national champion and was twice named to the All-America first-team. |
| 05/28/2008 – Ohio State Leads Way with 134 Spring/At-Large Academic All-Big Ten Selections Ohio State ranked first in the Big Ten with 134 student-athletes named to the Big Ten Academic All-Conference team for spring and at-large sports, the conference announced Wednesday. For the sixth-consecutive year, Ohio State ranked first among the 11 Big Ten schools in Academic All-Big Ten selections, totaling 266 in 2007-08. To be an eligible Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. For the spring and at-large announcement, Ohio State had 20 eligible sports. |
| 05/21/2008 – Buckeyes Recognized at Scholar-Athlete Dinner The Ohio State Department of Athletics held the 41st-annual Scholar-Athlete Dinner Recognizing Academic Excellence Wednesday at the Greater Columbus Convention Center to honor its student-athletes for their academic and athletic accomplishments. A record 475 OSU Scholar-Athletes were recognized at the event and a number of senior awards were given out. The winners of the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor were Jenna Griffin from the track team and men’s volleyball player Daniel Mathews. Each member institution in the conference gives the award annually to the male and female athletes in the graduating class who have attained the greatest proficiency in both academics and athletics. The Big Ten Conference office established the award in 1914 for men and an additional award for the top female was instituted in 1982. This honor includes a $5,000 postgraduate scholarship. |
| 04/10/2008 – Ohio State Student-Athletes Top 3.0 Mark in Winter Quarter The Ohio State University Student-Athlete Support Services Office released its 2008 Winter Quarter Academic Recap for Student-Athletes this week. The report announced the collective grade-point average for Buckeye student-athletes at 3.1 and totaled 48 individuals with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Of the 892 student-athletes active on sport rosters, 519 (58 percent) held at least a 3.0 mark in the classroom. |
| 03/26/2008 – Ohio State Student-Athletes Receive Winter Academic All-Big Ten Honors The Big Ten Conference announced the 2008 Winter Academic All-Big Ten team and a Big Ten-best 57 Buckeye student-athletes were honored for their academic efforts. Ohio State was one of just five Big Ten schools to have a member from each winter sport honored. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, a student-athlete must be a letterwinner in at least their second academic year and carry a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. In all, 469 conference student-athletes were honored. |
| 03/16/2008 – Student-Athletes Receive Degrees at Winter Commencement Thirty current and former Ohio State student-athletes received degrees Sunday at Winter Commencement ceremonies in the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Among the recipients were former baseball Academic All-American Mike Lockwood, starting football tailback Michael Wiley, a former member of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys, Todd Boeckman, the starting quarterback on the 2007 football Big Ten championship team, J.D. Bergman, a two-time wrestling All-American, and Krystin Schmid, a pistol All-American. |
| 12/09/2007 – Ohio State Student-Athletes Earn Degrees at Fall Commencement At fall commencement Sunday in St. John Arena, 23 current and former Buckeye student-athletes received their degree from The Ohio State University. Among the honorees were football players Kirk Barton and Marcus Freeman and former student-athletes Brandie Hoskins of the women’s basketball team, fencer Adam Crompton and Mike McCormick from men’s hockey. |
| 12/05/2007 – Ohio State Student-Athletes Receive Fall Academic All-Big Ten Honors The Big Ten Conference announced the Fall Academic All-Big Ten team and 74 Buckeye student-athletes were honored for their academic efforts. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, a student-athlete must be a letterwinner in at least his second academic year and carry a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. In all, 661 conference student-athletes were honored. The Buckeyes rank second in the Big Ten in award winners, behind Penn State’s 81. Ohio State was one of just five Big Ten teams to have a member from each fall sport receive the award. |
