Men’s Tennis: Bryan Koniecko Futures Tournament Update – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio Bryan Koniecko, a soon-to-be senior on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, advanced to his second Futures tournament final Saturday in Peoria, Ill. A native of Syosset, N.Y., Koniecko dropped a 7-6 (7), 6-2 decision to Jean-Yves Aubone.
Earlier in the summer, Koniecko and Buckeye teammate Justin Kronauge advanced to the doubles final of the Buffalo Bills Future in Rochester, N.Y.
Koniecko and Aubone are familiar opponents, having met in the NCAA singles championship round of 32. Koniecko was victorious in three sets 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
En route to his finals appearance in Peoria, Koniecko won four-consecutive matches, which included three straight-set wins. In the first round, the unseeded Koniecko defeated sixth-seed Adam El Mihdawy 6-4, 6-3. His second-round performance was just as impressive, beating qualifier Marc Spicijaric 6-1, 6-4.
In the quarterfinals, Koniecko matched-up against another familiar opponent in Robbye Poole. During the 2007-08 season, Koniecko and Poole met twice with the Buckeye taking both matches. Koniecko also won the final eight Futures contest 6-4, 6-3.
Koniecko would have his hands full in his semifinal match against No. 1-seed Luis Manuel Flores. Koniecko managed to take the first set 6-3, but Flores answered with a 7-5 second-set win. Koniecko was able to secure the victory with a 6-3 third-set triumph.
Koniecko also competed in the doubles bracket, pairing with Daniel Garza. The duo won their first-round match vs. Jonathan Tragardh and Michael Venus 3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-8 before dropping their quarterfinal match to Poole and Rylan Rizza 6-2, 6-7 (5), 10-8.
