COLUMBUS, Ohio Andras Horanyi and Teresa Meyer were named 2007-08 Ohio State Athletes of the Year Monday in an announcement made by the Ohio State department of athletics. Meyer, a member of the Buckeye pistol team, capped off her senior campaign with three national titles in 2008, giving her seven for her career while Horanyi, a junior on the fencing team, won his second-consecutive individual national foil championship.
With the honor, the duo became the first Buckeyes to earn the distinction from the fencing and pistol teams, respectively.
In 2008, Meyer won the women’s air pistol crown for the third-consecutive season and the women’s two-gun aggregate for the second time. In addition, the senior won the women’s sport pistol championship and was the open standard pistol winner as a junior. She also had Top 6 finishes in open standard and open air pistol.
The Dearborn, Mich., native is a 14-time All-American, earning first-team accolades in air and sport pistol this year and a second-team nod in standard pistol. Meyer and the Buckeyes finished second in the Open Collegiate National Championship and the squad finished third in the women’s championship. A Spring 2008 graduate with a degree in business administration (human resources), Meyer was a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor. She is enrolled in the Fisher College of Business MLHR program for Fall 2008.
Horanyi helped the Buckeyes to the 2008 NCAA national title, en route to claiming his second-consecutive national title in the foil. Hosting the event for the first time, Ohio State outlasted Notre Dame for the team championship – the 57th overall team title for the athletics department in school history.
A native of Boulder, Colo., Horanyi was a stabilizing force on a youthful 2008 OSU foil team, compiling a 24-3 record against varsity opponents to push his career record to 89-7. He won both the Midwest Fencing Conference title and earned gold at the Midwest Regional Qualifier. Prior to the season, Horanyi earned individual gold at the Pan-American Games while competing for Team USA.
