COLUMBUS, Ohio Geoff Carlston, head coach of the OhioState women’s volleyball team, has announced Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio) and Chelsea Noble (Jr.-So., Vandalia, Ohio) have been named the captains of the 2008 team.
“We are probably the only program in the nation that has two sophomores as captains, but the reality is they are two of our most experienced players on the team,” Carlston said. “They have the respect of their teammates because they reflect the hard work, competitiveness and selflessness that are necessary components to becoming a championship team.”
Hughes has played two years with OhioState, seeing action in 17 matches. Noble transferred from Tennessee and sat out the 2007 season. She played in 31 matches in 2006 for the Volunteers and 32 as a freshman.
“They are stabilizers and they are fearless, Carlston said. “For this youthful team, those are qualities that are essential to have in our leadership.
“We have a very unique dynamic in our group. We have great leaders across the board and, although Chelsea and Ashley are the captains, each player realizes they have a crucial role in building our success this season.”
OhioState opens the 2008 season by hosting the Sports Imports Classic Aug. 29-31. The Classic field includes Toledo, Xavier and YoungstownState.
