COLUMBUS, Ohio With its third-place finish in the 2008 Big Ten Championship Saturday at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich., the No. 14 Ohio State rowing team now has finished in the Top 3 of every championship since its inception in 2000.
The Buckeyes, the 2002 and 2006 champions, finished with 112 points, behind Michigan State (150 points) and Wisconsin (114 points).
It was the second-place finish in a time of 6:33.64 by the First Varsity Eight in the Grand Final that propelled Ohio State to its ninth Top 3 finish in the Big Ten championships. With the 1V8, which is comprised of Claudia Wurzel, Tess Prescott, Patricia Goodeman, Zuzanna Trzcinska, Gabriele Albertaviciute, Katie Flarida, Anniken Ellingsen, Cleonice Renzetti and Kate Hanseman, garnering 54 team points, the Buckeyes were able to jump in front of Minnesota and Michigan in the team race, which were tied for third entering the final event. Michigan State was first (6:31.00), beating out the Scarlet and Gray by a little more than two seconds. Michigan rounded out the Top 3 with a time of 6:36.17, while Minnesota was fourth (6:41.51). The First Varsity Eight won its heat in preliminary action, crossing the finish line at 6:26.33 and topping Minnesota (6:27.93) and Wisconsin (6:29.20).
The Second Varsity Eight, the No. 1 seed in the championships, added 30 team points to the Buckeye score when it finished third in the Grand Final in a time of 6:50.19. Wisconsin captured the top spot with a time of 6:46.40, while Michigan State was second (6:47.39). Minnesota was fourth in the championship race, crossing the finish line in 6:57.49. In preliminary action, the Buckeye boat of Simone Haubner, Carolin Helmholz, Mary Sheehan, Sara Reardon, Nora Franzen, Charlott Goldstein, Peta-Leigh Dakyns, Sara Wallace and Erika Benford won the first heat by almost four seconds, clocking in at 6:34.90. Michigan State was second in the heat, finishing at 6:38.40. Iowa and Indiana were third (6:46.70) and fourth (6:57.35), respectively.
Ohio State moved up to fourth place in the team rankings after the First Varsity Four’s third-place finish in the Grand Final. Compiling 15 points for the Scarlet and Gray, the 1V4 finished in a time of 7:34.43, less than a second ahead of Wisconsin, which finished the race in 7:35.08. Michigan State raced the winning time of 7:25.80, while Minnesota was second (7:32.57). En route to the Grand Final, Jackie Ruetenik, Ingrid Aasaaren, Johnna Burns, Andrea Dymalski and Kristin DiJosie clocked in three seconds (7:23.42) behind Wisconsin (7:20.65) and seven seconds ahead of Michigan (7:30.35) in the second preliminary heat to advance to the coveted championship race.
Three Buckeye boats Second Varsity Four, Second Novice Eight and First Novice Eight competed in the Petite Finals of their respective races.
The Second Varsity Four of Erin Shropshire, Ashley Korfel, Caroline McPherson and Farrah Edwards won its race for fifth-place overall and six team points, helping Ohio State move up in the team standings in a tie for fifth (13 points). The Scarlet and Gray dominated its race against Indiana and Iowa, finishing in a time of 8:14.20, almost 20 seconds more than the Hoosiers’ 8:33.90. The Hawkeyes completed the race in 9:16.51.
The Second Novice Eight of Mackenzie Pecor, Melissa Sillanpaa, Debra Leitch, Bethany Harris, Courtney Tooman, Katie Rasfeld, Jessica Neiding, Alissa Sullivan and Regina Steigerwald finished fifth in the overall standings after beating Michigan in the Petite Final. It was a tight race against the Wolverines, but the Buckeyes clocked in nearly three seconds faster than Michigan. The Scarlet and Gray crossed the finish line at 7:29.80, while the Maize and Blue completed the race in 7:32.19.
Although the First Novice Eight made up of Danielle Ewart, Kate Sweeney, Kyla Ferguson, Jill Mohr, Katie Burwell, Alicia Caldwell, Lindsey Titus, Adrienne Eichenlaub and Elena Reynolds dropped its race to Iowa in the Petite Final to finish sixth overall, the Buckeye boat still contributed four team points to Ohio State’s combined score. The Scarlet and Gray’s time of 7:21.06 fell just short of the Hawkeyes’ 7:17.39.
Following the championship, the All-Big Ten Teams and Sportsmanship Honorees were selected. Albertaviciute, also a 2007 selection, and Goodeman were named to the First Team and Renzetti and Ellingsen were selected to the Second-Team roster. Sheehan was the Buckeyes’ Sportsmanship Honoree.
