COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State rowing team will make its ninth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA championships after the announcement of the 2008 field Tuesday by the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Committee. The championships will take place May 30-June 1 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The University of California, Berkeley, will serve as host.
It is the 10th NCAA appearance overall for the Buckeyes. In 1997, in just Ohio State’s second year as a varsity program, the First Varsity Four became the first Buckeye boat to compete at nationals.
Ohio State was one of 12 teams selected with each team fielding two boats of eight rowers and one boat of four rowers. In addition, four Varsity Eight boats from institutions not represented in the team competition were selected.
Last year, Ohio State made program history by finishing third as a team in the 2007 NCAA Championships. Along with the program-best team standing, the First Varsity Eight was the runner-up in the Grand Final race, which stands as the best placing by a Buckeye boat in the history of the program.
