How it Works NCAA Selection
Both the Central Region champion and South Region champion is determined by an overall score that combines points from the First and Second Varsity Eights and the First and Second Varsity Four crews. The First Novice Eight also accrues points for each team.
The NCAA championship automatic bid from each region is determined by the highest scores accumulated in NCAA events (1V8, 2V8 and 1V4) only. Most of the time, the regional champion is also the automatic selection, but if a school only races in NCAA events, another squad can outscore its opponent for the regional title.
2007 Central/South Regional Championships
Last season, the Buckeyes captured the top spot in the Central Region for the fifth-consecutive year with 366 points, 20 points ahead of second-place Wisconsin. Ohio State placed second in the final overall standings behind Virginia, who earned 440 points as the South Region champion. Both teams went on to compete in the NCAA championships, where Ohio State earned third place as a team, a program best.
During the regional championships, the First Varsity Eight advanced to the Grand Final and finished second behind Virginia. In the Petite Final, the Second Varsity Eight garnered a first-place finish. The Scarlet and Gray’s First Varsity Four came in third in its Grand Final. The Open Four and First Novice Eight crews finished third in their Petite Finals.
Melton Hill Lake
The Melton Hill Rowing Course has been host of several regattas for the past 30 years. It is known as one of the best rowing venues in the U.S. Melton Hill Lake is protected by hills on each side, which limits the wind during races. The 2000-meter rowing course provides seven straight lanes that are fully buoyed.
2008 Big Ten Championships
With its third-place finish in the 2008 Big Ten Championships May 3 at Belleville Lake in Belleville, Mich., then-No. 14 Ohio State has finished in the Top 3 of every league championship since its inception in 2000.
The Buckeyes, the 2002 and 2006 champions, finished with 112 points, behind Michigan State (150 points) and Wisconsin (114 points).
It was the second-place finish in a time of 6:33.64 by the First Varsity Eight in the Grand Final that propelled Ohio State to its ninth Top 3 finish in the league championships. Michigan State was first with a time of 6:31.00, beating out the Scarlet and Gray by a little more than two seconds.
The No. 1 seed Second Varsity Eight finished third in the Grand Final with a time of 6:50.19. The Buckeyes won their first heat by almost four seconds, clocking in at 6:34.90. Michigan State was second in the heat, finishing at 6:38.40.
Ohio State’s First Varsity Four finished third with a time of 7:34.43, in the Grand Final which helped push the Buckeyes to fourth place.
Three Buckeye boats Second Varsity Four, First Novice Eight and Second Novice Eight competed in the Petite Finals of their respective races.
The Second Varsity Four won its race for fifth-place overall and six team points, helping Ohio State move up in the team standings in a tie for fifth (13 points). The Second Novice Eight finished fifth in the overall standings after beating Michigan in the Petite Final. Although, the First Novice Eight dropped its race to Iowa in the Petite Final to finish sixth overall, the Buckeye boat still contributed four team points to Ohio State’s combined score.
Novice Boats Improve Times
The First and Second Novice Eights each recorded their fastest times this season at the Big Ten championships May 3 in Belleville, Mich. The Buckeyes improved their time of 7:03.0 at the Big Ten/ACC duals April 5 to 6:59.26 at the league championships, behind Michigan who clocked in at 6:51.30, and Minnesota (6:55.30).
The Scarlet and Gray’s Second Novice Eight recorded a time of 7:06.2 at the Big Ten/ACC Duals and improved its time by about two seconds at the Big Ten championships when they finished in 7:04.67, behind Wisconsin (7:01.00) and Minnesota (7:02.66).
These improved times gave the Buckeyes seven team points, which helped propel Ohio State to a third-place finish in the conference championships.
