Athletes of the Week
Jamar Butler, senior guard of the men’s basketball team, set the career assist record at Ohio State with six helpers at Northwestern Feb. 13. At the 2 minute, 52 second mark of the second half, Butler fed freshman Jon Diebler for a 3-pointer that put Ohio State up 57-42. The bucket was Butler’s sixth assist of the game and No. 517 of his career. Kelvin Ransey (1977-80) is No. 2 with 516. The native of Lima, Ohio, added six more helpers against the Wolverines Feb. 17 for a career total 523. Butler has connected on 209 career 3-pointers and owns the Ohio State record for made 3s in a career as well. He passed Brent Darby (2000-03) and Scoonie Penn (1999-2000) with a 4-of-8 effort from long range against VMI Nov. 25. Butler ranks No. 1 all-time in 3-pointers attempted (562).
Lisa Chesson, a senior defenseman on the women’s hockey team, had two multi-point games to lead Ohio State to a sweep of Minnesota State, Feb. 15-16 at the OSU Ice Rink. With 1:39 remaining in the game, the assistant captain from Plainfield, Ill., scored a power play goal to give the Buckeyes the victory. Just over three minutes earlier, she had an assist on the game-tying goal as OSU came back for the 3-2 win. The following game Chesson set up the second and third goals in the Buckeyes’ 4-0 shutout of the Mavericks.
Along with her four points, Chesson was an anchor on the OSU power play that was 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) and penalty kill that was 12-of-13 (92.3 percent). Chesson ranks fourth on the team in scoring with 22 points, including 14 assists. She has recorded a point in seven of the last eight games, with a total of nine points in that span. The four points also increased her career total to 85 to tie her for fourth all-time in OSU defenseman scoring and seventh overall.
Athletics Good Stuff
Men’s Basketball (17-9; 8-5 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Thad Matta
Senior guard Jamar Butler set the Ohio State all-time assists record (517) en route to leading the Buckeyes to a 65-47 win over Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., Feb. 13. The victory also was head coach Thad Matta’s 200th-career win.
Freshman center Kosta Koufos led the Buckeyes with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Butler had 12 points and six assists. Senior center Othello Hunter had 14 points.
Koufos scored 18 points and freshman guard Evan Turner had 16 for the Buckeyes, but it was not enough as Michigan pulled away late for an 80-70 victory Feb. 17 in Crisler Arena.

Marscilla Packer scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to help Ohio State beat Purdue, 72-56, Feb. 18.
Jantel Lavender added 13 points while Tamarah Riley had 12 and Ashlee Trebilcock and Shavelle Little had 11 each.
Ohio State (19-6, 10-4 Big Ten) moved ahead of Purdue (14-12, 10-5) and trails first-place Iowa by a half-game in the conference standings. The Buckeyes host the Hawkeyes (11-4) on Thursday night.

Men’s Golf
Head Coach: Jim Brown
Sophomore Patrick Simard shot a career-best 65 to lead Ohio State to victory in a single-round tri-match against Iowa State and Florida Atlantic Feb. 16 at the par 72, 7,277-yard Crooked Cat Course at the Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Orlando, Fla.
The victory opened the team’s spring season as the Buckeyes finished with a team score of 6-under 354 and won the tri-match by nine strokes over Iowa State and had a 17-stroke advantage over Florida Atlantic.
Simard had the lowest score of the tournament with his 7-under 65. It was the third round in the 60’s this season for the native of Marbella, Spain. Tying for third were freshman Bo Hoag and junior Dan Rush with scores of 70 (-2).

Women’s Golf
Head Coach Therese Hession
Ohio State concluded the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Feb. 13 in 15th place. The Buckeyes shot a team score of 318 during the third round at the par 71, 5,912-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club, to bring their tournament total to 942 (309-315-318).
Sophomore Emma Jandel carded a final round of 5-over 76 to lead the Buckeyes the third day and finish the event with a total score of 233. The native of Dayton, Ohio, tied with teammate Carling Coffing in 45th place. Coffing, from Middletown, Ohio, shot a final round of 82.
Also competing for the Buckeyes were juniors Jennifer Cassidy, Gemma Webster and Jessica Hauser. They recorded third-round scores of 80, 81 and 81, respectively. Cassidy finished tied for 57th at 237, followed by Webster in a tie for 63rd at 240 and Hauser in 74th at 246.

No. 7 Men’s Gymnastics (4-6; 2-3 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes scored a season-high 351.00 in St. John Arena Feb. 16, but lost to California, who notched a 355.2.
Ohio State won the floor and vault events, scoring a 59.8 and 62.5, respectively. Junior Eddie Hay led the Scarlet and Gray on floor with a meet-best 15.65, while senior captain Jimmy Wickham scored a 16.2 to lead the Buckeyes on vault.

No. 20 Women’s Gymnastics (4-2-1; 1-0-1 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes took the top two spots in three of four events to top Pittsburgh, 194.675-192.750, Feb. 16 in St. John Arena.
The Big Ten’s leader in the all-around, freshman Rebecca Best won the all-around for the third-consecutive meet, scoring a 39.150. Highlighting the meet were a pair of 9.90s on floor turned in by Best and senior Maalika Moore-Thomas.
Ohio State posted a 48.975 on vault for a new season high in that event. The Buckeyes bettered the Panthers on vault, bars (48.825) and floor (49.150), while scoring a 47.725 on beam.

Men’s Hockey (10-21-3; 6-16-2 CCHA)

Ohio State split its weekend series (Feb. 15-16) against Northern Michigan. After losing, 2-0, in game one, the Buckeyes rallied to beat the Wildcats, 3-2, in game two.
On senior night Feb. 16, senior Tommy Goebel scored the gamewinner in regulation as time expired for the win. Down by one entering the third period, freshman Peter Boyd evened the score on his power-play goal at the 16:08 mark. Boyd also was responsible for the first OSU goal in the first period.
The eight members of the Ohio State senior class were honored in a postgame ceremony. The group includes Jason DeSantis, John Dingle, Tom Fritsche, Goebel, Kyle Hood, Johann Kroll, Phil Lauderdale and Matt McIlvane.

Senior defenseman Lisa Chesson scored a power-play goal with 1:49 remaining on the clock to give Ohio State a 3-2 victory against Minnesota State in game one Feb. 15 at the OSU Ice Rink.
Of the seven points collected by Ohio State players, six of them were recorded by defensemen, led by Chesson and freshman Shannon Reilly with a goal and assist each. Sophomore Rachel Davis also scored and senior Tessa Bonhomme had an assist.
In game two, senior Erin Keys led Ohio State with two goals as the Buckeyes swept the weekend series, with a 4-0 victory Feb. 16. Sophomore Colleen Olson scored her first-career goal as a Buckeye and Bonhomme put the game away with her tally at the 11:07 mark.
Prior to the game, Ohio State honored its six seniors: Bonhomme, Chesson, Keys, Jill Mauch, Mallory Peckels and Jody Heywood.

Men’s Lacrosse (0-1; 0-0 GWLL)

Down by as much as four goals, the Buckeyes rallied in regulation to tie the score at 7-all to send their game against No. 11 Navy into overtime Feb. 16 in Ohio Stadium. However, in the sudden victory overtime, the Midshipmen scored the go-ahead goal with 1:55 remaining and Ohio State dropped an 8-7 decision.
In Ohio State’s season and home opener, senior Kevin Buchanan led the Buckeyes with three goals, including the tally that tied the game at the end of regulation, as he reached the 100-point mark for his career. Junior transfer Peet Poillon had two goals and an assist for three points in his first game as a Buckeye. Junior Joel Dalgarno had two goals as he extended his point streak to 28 games and sophomore James Green chipped in two assists.

Women’s Lacrosse (2-0; 0-0 ALC)

In the Buckeyes’ season and home opener, they defeated American, 14-3, at North Turf Field Feb. 16. In the win, Ohio State featured a balanced scoring attack with seven Buckeyes recording at least one goal. Senior Amanda Shimp and sophomore Brittney Zerhusen had four goals a piece and senior Kristen Slahor led Ohio State in the points category with five assists and a goal.
The squad moved to 2-0 on the season after it defeated Duquesne, 14-10, Feb. 19 in Columbus. Zerhusen led Ohio State with five points on two goals and three assists. Kelly Haggerty and Maghan Beaudrault each scored four goals for the Buckeyes.
Beaudrault recorded a team-high six draw controls. In goal, Kristen Gilwee had five saves and Annie Carruthers four for the Buckeyes.

Rifle

Serving as host of a Collegiate Sectional and NCAA Qualifier at the Lt. Hugh W. Wyle Range in Converse Hall, Ohio State finished second with a 4,503. Akron finished first with a 4,538 aggregate score, winning both the smallbore rifle (2,253) and air rifle (2,285) competition. The Rose Hulman Institute of Technology was third with a 4,334.
Freshman James Clark finished first in air rifle with a 587.
Individual team scorers for Ohio State in smallbore rifle included Clark at 568, freshman Jasmine Margaria at 559, junior Steven Nozaki at 542 and junior Staci Collins at 553. The air rifle team included Clark at 587, senior Kelly Lake at 572, Nozaki at 560 and Collins at 562.
Sam Ohlinger, senior captain of the rifle team, will hold a live online chat from 11-11:30 a.m. Friday to answer fans’ questions. Fans can submit their questions in advance or may participate live through the website at OhioStateBuckeyes.com. This past December, Ohlinger instructed the U.S. Army’s 3rd Ranger Battalion in advanced marksmanship principles. The senior is on track to graduate in June with a degree in political science and plans on attending law school next year.

No. 18 Softball (8-2; 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State went 3-2 at the Florida International Tournament Feb. 15-17 in Miami, Fla., with two wins ending in the sixth inning after the 8-run rule was imposed.
In game one, the Buckeyes beat Providence, 9-0, before dropping a 6-4 decision to Georgia. Ohio State rebounded with an 8-0 win over Illinois State and 16-4 victory over Florida International. Ohio State lost its final game to Florida International, 7-1.
In the final game of the tournament, senior Brittany Vanderink’s sixth-inning triple was her 10th career triple, moving her into sole possession of fifth place on Ohio State’s career triples list. Anna Smith (1999-2002) ranks fourth with 11.
With four strikeouts against Florida International in the teams’ second meeting, sophomore Lindsay Bodeker leads the OSU pitching staff with 34 strikeouts so far this season.

Synchronized Swimming (12-1)

Competing in back-to-back competitions Feb. 16-17, Ohio State finished second and first at the Keuka College Invitational and Keuka College Tri-Meet, respectively, in Keuka Park, N.Y.
A strategic move by Buckeye head coach Linda Lichter-Witter, Ohio State sent only some members of the Gray squad to Keuka Park. Despite the limited number of Buckeyes in action, the Scarlet and Gray was able to compile a total of 170 points during the weekend.
In its first-place finish in the tri-meet with 86 points, Ohio State outdistanced Keuka (72) and Wheaton (48). The Buckeyes swept every event, which included the Gray’s squad 89.750 in the team competition. The squad is comprised of Kaitlin Bolt, Julia Broadfoot, Erin DeMarco, Liz Derr, Jackie Mundy, Brooke Paul, Emilie Siemer and Kendra Sollars. Rita Gillan and Diana Care serve as alternates.
The trio of Bolt, Mundy and Paul tallied an 87.250 to edge teammates Gillan, Monica Finnigan and Care’s 87.000 for first in the trio competition.
The pair of Asia Luke and Tayler Stachowicz was the lone Buckeye representatives in the duet, but still scored a first-place finish with a mark of 87.500. Freshman Hilary Deason recorded her first collegiate solo win when she earned 86.750 points. DeMarco also performed a solo routine and scored an 84.250 for fourth-place.

No. 3 Men’s Tennis (11-1; 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State was the runner-up at the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championship played on the University of Washington campus. It was the second-consecutive appearance in the final of the national indoors for the Buckeyes.
En route to the championship match, Ohio State defeated No. 34 Boise State (4-0), No. 6 USC (4-1) and No. 2 Georgia (4-1) before dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 1 Virginia.
In three wins over No. 34 Boise State (4-0), No. 6 USC (4-1) and No. 2 Georgia (4-1), senior Drew Eberly and freshman Matt Allare have posted perfect records in singles action. The doubles tandems of Eberly and Justin Kronauge and Bryan Koniecko and Steven Moneke also are perfect in the championship.

Women’s Tennis (5-2; 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State was defeated by No. 14 Notre Dame, 5-2, Feb. 14 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind. The highlight of the match for the Buckeyes came at the No. 4 singles spot, where junior Julie Blackmore upset No. 88 Colleen Rielley, 7-5, 6-2. Paloma Escobedo snapped her personal three-match losing streak against No. 64 Brook Buck at the No. 2 singles spot following the retirement of Buck because of injury.
The Buckeyes then began an eight-match homestand at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center Feb. 16 beginning with a doubleheader against No. 31 South Florida and Toledo. After dropping a 4-3 decision to South Florida, the Buckeyes defeated the Rockets, 6-1.
Against Toledo, Angela DiPastina lost the first set in No. 1 singles against Martina Wodzinski, 6-3, before firing back to take the second set, 6-2. DiPastina also controlled the third set and won the match, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Christina Keesey was the victor in No. 3 singles, topping Maha Guirguis, 6-2, 6-2, to pick up her 12th win of the season. At the No. 5 spot, senior Caitlin O’Keefe topped Nadia Zoubareva, 6-2, 6-0.
In No. 4 singles, Cami Hubbs dropped Jenny Belsky in two sets, 6-4, 6-2. The win, the first for Hubbs this season from the No. 4 spot, gave her a team-high 19 victories.
The No. 2 spot was owned by Escobedo, who defeated Ashley Frey, 6-3, 7-5, to pick up her 10th win of the season.
After losing four-consecutive games, doubles partners Keesey and DiPastina won their second match of the day against Wodzinski and Zoubareva, 8-3, at the No. 1 position. Blackmore and Hubbs clinched the doubles point for the Buckeyes with an 8-1 victory over Frey and Guirguis in No. 2 doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Escobedo and O’Keefe fought to an 8-6 win over Belsky and Sarah Horning.

Men’s Track and Field

Ohio State finished first at the All-Ohio Championships Feb. 15-16 in Findlay, Ohio. The Buckeyes won the event with a score of 190.50, despite not competing at full strength with four Buckeyes competing out west at the Husky Classic at the University of Washington in Seattle.
The Buckeyes swept the top three spots in the 200-meter dash, led by Matt Comer (22.05), Anthony Cole (22.16) and Curtis Leuenbrerger (22.39). Elon Simms (49.38) and Brandon Woodard (49.42) also took the top two spots in the 400 meter.
Lenny Jatsek once again took first in the weight throw with a throw of 67-04.00 (20.52m).
Jonathan Francois placed first for the Buckeyes in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.16. Justin Yates took first place in the triple jump at 43-10.50 (13.37m) and second in the long jump at 21-07.25 (6.58m).
Three Buckeyes scored points in the pole vault, led by first-place finisher Kyle Burns who cleared 16-08.00. The 4×400 meter relay team of Comer, Simms, Woodard and Stephen Robinson took first with a time of 3:14.39.
Meanwhile, at the Husky Invite out west, freshman Dan White took 27th in the 800-meter run against a tough field, coming in with a time of 1:53.74. Jeff See finished eighth in the 3000 meter with a time of 7:56.42 — the second-fastest time in OSU history.

Women’s Track and Field

Ohio State finished third at the All-Ohio Championships Feb. 15-16 in Findlay, Ohio. The Buckeyes finished with 92 team points behind second-place Cincinnati (106) and first-place Miami (Ohio) (161.50).
Veronica Jatsek once again took first in the weight throw with a toss of 69-01.25 (21.06m) while Chelsea James (18-05.25) and Alana Gray (18-01.00) took first and second in the long jump.
The 4×400 meter relay team of Chandra Krempel, Ashely Caldwell, Letecia Wright and Ayrizanna Favours edged Miami for first place with a time of 3:52.12. Krempel also won the 400-meter dash in a time of 55.91, followed by fourth-place Caldwell in 57.21.
Wright and Krempel led the way in the 200 meter, fi nishing fourth (25.51) and sixth (25.53), respectively.

No. 8 Men’s Volleyball (8-3; 5-1 MIVA)

Ohio State lost a 3-1 decision at Ball State Feb. 15 in Muncie, Ind. Junior Robbie Klein posted a team-high 21.5 points in the match with 18 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and three assist blocks.
For the match, Ohio State had a 7-6 edge in ace serves and Daniel Mathews had a match-high four ace serves. Brett Versen recorded a match-high six total blocks with a solo and five assists.
The Buckeyes, behind a match-high 15.5 points from Klein, won a 3-0 decision over Juniata Feb. 17 in St. John Arena. Klein produced 11 kills, three ace serves, a solo block and one assist block in the contest.
For the match, Ohio State hit .253 to .048 for Juniata. The Buckeyes had a 39-34 advantage in kills and a seven-to-three margin in ace serves. Klein posted a match-high three for the Buckeyes. Defensively, the Buckeyes edged Juniata in digs, 30-29. Senior Conor Martin recorded a match-high 10. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 15 to 10 margin in team blocks. Kevin Heine recorded a match-high seven assist blocks for his career high, while Mathews had 25 and sophomore Steven Kehoe had nine for Ohio State.

Ohio State concluded the home portion of its schedule with a 23-13 victory over No. 14 and nonconference opponent Edinboro Feb. 14 in St. John Arena on senior night. It was the final home match for five Buckeye seniors J.D. Bergman, T.J. Enright, Alex Picazo, Tommy Priestley and Nickolai Timbs.
The Buckeyes won five of six bouts to open the match with a 20-3 lead. Freshman Nikko Triggas and redshirt-sophomore Reece Humphrey opened a 9-0 lead for the Scarlet and Gray before Enright wrestled at 141 in his final match in St. John Arena. Enright gave the Buckeyes a 12-0 lead after an overtime win. Sophomore Lance Palmer garnered a win at 149 pounds and freshman Colt Sponseller won at 165 pounds. Bergman garnered the final OSU win at heavyweight.
