Bowling Green scored twice in the final seven minutes of the first period to hold a 2-0 lead after one. Derek Whitmore opened the scoring at 13:01 after Mike Nesdill found him open at the left point and he lifted the puck behind OSU goalie Dustin Carlson. Kai Kantola added a goal at 19:19, tipping a Michael Hodgson shot right in front of the Buckeye net. Each team had nine shots on net in the period. The Buckeyes held the Falcons scoreless on the only two power-play chances of the period.
Buckeye junior Nick Biondo cut the Falcon lead to one (2-1) with a goal at 15:19 of the second with the teams skating 4-on-4. After a save on a Tom Fritsche shot, Biondo got to the puck in the high slot and his shot sailed past BG goalie Nick Eno for his third goal of the season. Cepis added his second goal of the game just 49 seconds into the third, intercepting a Buckeye clearing attempt and scoring unassisted to extend the Falcon lead to 4-1. Corey Toy added his second goal in two games, taking a pass through the slot from Tommy Goebel and beating Eno high on the far side. Freshman Kyle Reed also assisted on the goal, which came at 16:34 and cut the Falcons lead to two (4-2). With 2:12 remaining the Buckeyes went on the power play and the team pulled Carlson for a 6-on-4 advantage. The Buckeyes were unable to convert, and Whitmore closed out the scoring with a shorthanded, empty-net goal with 27 seconds left. Postgame Quotes
Scott Paluch, Bowling Green head coach
On the game
“It was more of an even game than is indicative by the score. The difference tonight was us getting the puck to go in. I really liked the way our team played at the end when Ohio State pulled its goalie.”
On Bowling Green’s third goal
“It’s hard to score goals at times but the third goal helped us take away the momentum that Ohio State had with the score at 2-1. He (Jacob Cepis) can create his own offense. He had a big burst and quick stick and that goal was an important one for us.”
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On the game
“They outplayed us tonight. The first 10 minutes I thought we played well, I thought maybe we’d changed a little bit. The minute they scored the first goal we just weren’t the same. We got soft on the puck and they just outworked us.”
On the youth of the team
“The challenge of youth is bring consistency and hard play every night. We have to be more mature. Part of that process is knowing when to bring it and our leadership hasn’t been setting a very good example of that.”
On the maturity of the team
“We’re not a team that can rely on one guy. We have to have a solid effort from each line and grind out goals.”
Nick Biondo, junior defenseman
On the third goal by Bowling Green
“I wouldn’t say it was a back-breaker but it definitely got us down a little bit. We still played tough at the end but like Coach said, if you don’t play 60 minutes you aren’t going to win.”
Corey Toy, freshman defenseman
On the message from Coach Markell during the second-period time out
“He tried to get us going harder. We knew we were getting outworked and he just drove home the fact that we needed to stick to the gameplan and get more physical.”
