Athletes of the Week
Men’s soccer’s freshman forward Joshua Breto scored the gamewinning goal Sunday against Eastern Illinois in the 59th minute. He went on to assist the second goal of the day 10 minutes later for his first collegiate three-point game. The goal was the second game-winner this season for Breto, who is the only player of the bench to tally one (let alone two) gamewinning goals.
Senior goaltender Liana Bonanno earned U.S. College Hockey Online Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors after she backstopped the women’s hockey team to an upset sweep at No. 9 Providence, Oct. 3-4 in Providence, R.I. The assistant captain made a total of 70 saves with just three goals allowed to the Friars for a .959 save percentage. Bonanno made 39 saves, just three shy of her career high, in a season-opening 2-1 victory. She then made 31 saves in the second game as the Buckeyes rallied for a 3-2 win to complete the sweep.
Bonanno, a native of Mount Sinai, N.Y., has now made 30 or more saves in a game 19 times in her career. She helped the Ohio State penalty kill to a solid 17-of-19 performance, making 25 saves against the PC power play. The two wins at Providence was just the second season-opening road sweep in Ohio State history.
