COLUMBUS, Ohio Freshman forward Paige Maxwell, from Medina, Ohio, is the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week following her two-goal weekend that helped extend Ohio State’s winning streak to six consecutive games. The honor marks the third consecutive week a Buckeye has been recognized by the Big Ten, after Lisa Collison and Lauren Robertson were chosen offensive and co-defensive players of the week, respectively, the past two weeks.
In the 4-0 win Friday over Wisconsin, Maxwell scored the decisive third goal in the 56th minute that increased a tenuous 2-0 lead to a more comfortable 3-0 advantage. She also had four shots on goal and all from in close, thus making the box in front of the goal area “Maxwell’s house.”
Maxwell, a high school and youth All-American last year with the Cleveland Internationals and at Medina High School, came back with two shots and her first game-winning goal in the tense, 1-0, win over Northwestern.
The game against Northwestern was designed and marketed as a Breast Cancer Awareness game and Maxwell’s goal couldn’t have been more fitting. It came 2:19 into the game and just moments after Maxwell had presented her mother, Melinda, a breast cancer survivor, with a pink rose as one of the team’s honorary captains for the game.
Maxwell has four goals and 10 points this season and ranks second on the team in both categories. She and the Buckeyes, on top of the Big Ten standings with a 3-0-0 record, travel to the state of Michigan for games Friday against Michigan State (4 p.m.) and Sunday vs. Michigan (1 p.m.)
