Men’s Hockey: Three-Goal Third Period Lifts Buckeyes to 4-2 Win over Lake Superior State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s hockey team scored twice in 24 seconds in the third period to tie the game and take the lead en route to a 4-2 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes tied the game at one in the second period before the Lakers regained the lead (2-1) at 6:42 of the third. Senior Corey Elkins scored on the power play for the Buckeyes at 8:24 and John Albert followed with a goal at 8:28 to put Ohio State ahead, 3-2. Freshman Zac Dalpe, who had a team-best two goals and three points in the game, sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:13.
The win gives the Buckeyes a split of the series with the Lakers. Ohio State now is 1-2-1 on the year (1-2-1-1 CCHA) and LSSU is 1-1-1 (1-1-0-0 CCHA).
The Lakers scored the only goal of the first period when Steven Kaunitso’s shot from the point got through, with Carter Lee and Josh Sim picking up the assists on the goal. Each team put eight shots on net in the period. The Lakers took the only penalty of the period at 19:49, with the Buckeyes’ power play carrying over into the second.
The Buckeyes tied the game at 11:16 of the second when Zac Dalpe tipped Kyle Reed’s pass through the legs of Laker goalie Pat Inglis, with Hunter Bishop on the second assist. The teams combined for 27 shots in the period Ohio State 14, Lake State 13. Each team was 0-for-3 on the power play in the period.
Zac MacVoy scored 6:42 into the third period to regain the Lakers’ one-goal lead (2-1). Elkins tallied his team-best third goal of the year at 8:24, gathering the puck at the side of the net and putting in at a sharp angle to tie the game at 2. Dalpe and Bishop had the assists on the power-play goal. Just 24 seconds later, Albert took passes from Corey Toy and Sergio Somma and beat Inglis to give the Buckeyes their first lead of the game. The Buckeye penalty kill maintained the one-goal lead with a stop on a penalty with less than five minutes remaining. Dalpe closed out the game when his shot from center ice went in the empty net, assisted by Peter Boyd and Chris Reed. Ohio State carried play through most of the period, outshooting Lake State, 15-8. Each team had two power-play chances, with Ohio State going 1-for-2 and LSSU ending 0-for-2.
For the game, Ohio State outshot Lake State, 37-29. Buckeye goalie Dustin Carlson picked up his first win of the season, stopping 27 shots in 60 minutes. Inglis had 33 saves in 59:51 for the Lakers.
Ohio State ended the game 1-for-4 on the power play and held the Lakers scoreless on all five chances.
Postgame Notes
The Buckeyes return to action with two games at Denver next weekend. The teams will meet at 9:37 ET Friday and at 9:07 ET Saturday at Magness Arena.
Dalpe had the first two-goal game and three-point outing for a Buckeye this season. He had a team-best four points in the series.
Bishop had the second two-assist game of his career. He is second on the team with five points this year.
Albert has a team-high six points this season and has at least one point in each of the team’s four games.
Elkins has a goal in each of his last three games.
Chris Reed has an assist in three of four games on the year. Boyd has a point in three of four outings.
Freshman defenseman Sean Duddy saw his first collegiate action in the game.
Just two upperclassmen were in the lineup for the Buckeyes – senior Elkins and junior Mathieu Picard. The rest of the lineup included 11 sophomores and six freshmen.
